- Owen introduces Callie to the Veterans Hospital patients in hopes that she will help them with her robotic limb lab, Jo becomes jealous of Alex and Meredith's friendship, and Maggie continues to confide in Richard. Meanwhile, Alex and Bailey prepare to go in front of the board.
- Meredith is unloading on Alex, while he tries to take a shower, about Pierce and how she doesn't need another sister. He's worried about a presentation he has to give to the board to get a job back at the hospital. Jo overhears some of this through the bathroom door and is worried that Meredith has stolen Alex.
Hunt and Callie visit a veterans rehabilitation center where Callie is going to give a speech to wounded warriors fem various special ops teams.
Arizona has started her fellowship with Dr. Hermann, who is trying to show her the ropes about in utero surgery. Arizona is taking longer to pick up on things than Dr. Hermann would like.
Amy is frustrated with Derek for overwriting an order she made for one of her patients.
Stephanie is trying to help clear Bailey's schedule so she can have an easy day before her own presentation to the board, where she's going head to head against Alex for the spot on the board. Bailey gets a page about a freeway pileup.
Meredith, who is staying home "sick," is still complaining to Alex about whether or not Pierce is her sister. She insists that if Webber knew, he would tell her.
Back at the hospital, Pierce and Webber have an awkward moment in the elevator before Pierce reveals that she told Meredith the night before about their shared mother. She says it "could've gone better."
A crowd at the hospital has gathered around one of the patients from the freeway accident: A man who rear-ended a lumber truck and has a massive tree branch lodged in his chest. Even Bailey sneaks a selfie with the man in the background.
Bailey, Pierce, Webber and Stephanie work to save the man.
Hunt and Callie talk to one of the veterans to discuss giving him a "free, pain-free robot leg," but he doesn't believe it's possible. Callie is developing the program but needs to make sure it is funded.
Arizona complains to Callie about her hectic schedule with Dr. Hermann, but Callie encourages her while Arizona promises to meet Callie at the surrogacy center that night.
Amy and Derek work on a patient named Steve from the car accident. Amy is again getting annoyed with Derek trying to take the lead on the patient.
Back at the house, Alex practices his presentation but Meredith is distracted. Meredith is drinking in the middle of the day and starts ranting about Derek walking around "feeling like a martyr," and saying he "can go suck it."
Callie and Hunt show the veteran the titanium leg and he's excited about possibly keeping it after the study. He talks about how he still dreams of running with the guys. Callie isn't seeing the kinds of spikes from his brainwaves that she needs for her robot leg to work. She tells Hunt that Jeff's amputation was done in such a way that stopped the nerves from connecting to the brain waves. Hunt pulls her outside and asks her to figure out a way to make it work. They argue over who got the vet's hopes up and Callie is upset that Hunt over promised on what Callie might be able to do. She says she now has to go crush the vet's dreams because of Hunt.
Pierce and Webber have a little connection in surgery, when she compliments his skills and he tells her she'll be as quick as him one day.
Jackson complains to Callie about arguing with Hunt in the hallway because it turns him into a hall monitor. He's also annoyed that everyone keeps dropping lame requests on him and he doesn't get to do interesting surgeries. She complains to Jackson about the procedure Hunt wants her to do, but he suggests an alternate way to get the vet's brain waves to communicate with his new leg.
Others, including Jackson, are starting to notice the unique, light and easy communication Webber seems to have with Pierce.
At the house, Alex is using Meredith's credentials to log into the hospital's personnel system to get the facts of Pierce's background. He figures, based on Pierce's date of birth, that Ellis Grey would have been pregnant around the spring of 1983. Meredith says that's when Ellis tried to kill herself.
Bailey and Stephanie talk again about Bailey's presentation, and Bailey insists that she's not scared of Alex. Stephanie breaks down all the ways in which Alex has direct connections to basically everyone on the board. Bailey seems nervous.
Arizona has another tense encounter with Dr. Hermann.
Alex finds a digital copy of the paperwork from Ellis being admitted to the hospital in 1983, which confirms that Ellis was pregnant at the time. "She's my sister," Meredith admits.
Hunt finds Callie and abruptly apologizes to her, but she asks him to explain why he was yelling at her. He says he needs something to be good, feel right. He starts letting loose about missing Cristina, saying it doesn't feel fair, right or good that she is going on every day happy without him, but he wonders whether his dreams are over and he's going to be single forever. He says, "She was my family." Then he goes back to saying he needs something to be good. He says that's why he brought her to the rehab center and asked her to do something. She surprised Hunt by asking him if he wants to watch Jeff's surgery. She tells him about the work Jackson is doing to move the nerves so that they can talk to the robot leg's sensors.
Derek confronts his sister and tells her not to challenge him, and she leaves in frustration. April brings some scans for "Miss Dr. Shepherd," but Derek takes them and looks at them, then tells her to book an O.R. He's going to do the surgery himself because Amy's patient's aneurysm has gotten too big. April is stunned.
Webber shows up at the house and Meredith asks when he knew. He says he didn't know anything about Ellis being pregnant until Pierce told him. Meredith is upset that he didn't tell her. Then she's surprised that he didn't say anything to Pierce. Webber says he would liked to have known 30 years ago, to have been a father, but he says Ellis "stole that chance from me."
Amy comes into the O.R. screaming at Derek for taking over her patient. She scrubs in and tries to help, but the patient might already be brain dead.
Webber tells Meredith the story of Ellis leaving for Boston, then says that he and Pierce "had an amazing day today" and adds that she's someone he'd like to know. Meredith encourages him to tell Pierce and not make her wait any longer.
Jackson tells Callie that the second surgery on Jeff could have been avoided had the amputation been done just slightly differently in the first place. She suddenly asks Jackson to be part of the new program she and Hunt are starting for veterans. Hunt is surprised at first, but then goes along with it.
Later, Callie excitedly tells Arizona about the development with the amputations, but Arizona seems distracted. Arizona too eagerly suggests that Callie might be to busy for them to have a baby. Callie pushes Arizona to admit that she doesn't want a baby.
Amy tells Derek she doesn't want any more of his bullying. She mocks him for kicking around "the peons" because he made the choice not to go work for the president. He admits that he's never felt this way before -- having taken a step backward in his career -- but he feels like Meredith forced him to do it. Amy says she doesn't want to have to deal with him and those issues. He says he's trying and she says "we're all trying -- it's just no one wants to give up, or give in, and no one should. Right?"
Callie is crying while checking on Jeff when Jackson and Hunt come by and tell her it's time for the board meeting. Callie tries to compose herself with her back to them, but Hunt realizes something's wrong and stays with Callie. She cries and tells Hunt she needs something to be good, too. She wipes away the tears and Hunt tells her she's about a "6" on the sloppy scale.
Alex and Bailey awkwardly sit next to each other outside the board room before the meeting starts.
Webber sees Pierce outside the hospital on his way in. Meredith goes in without him and says she'll tell the board he's on his way. Webber goes to Pierce and tells her that he and Ellis Grey knew each other and that they had a relationship. She calls him a coward for having waited a whole week before admitting it, and she leaves.
Meredith shows up and admits to Derek that she's had a weird day and that she's a little drunk. He angrily asks if he gave up D.C. so she could "play hookie and get drunk with [her] friends." She apparently was just about to tell him about Pierce, but stops herself and heads into the board room.
The room is tense as virtually every member of the board is going through his or her own personal crisis while Alex and Bailey give their presentations.
Arizona calls Alex back into the room, leaving Bailey in the hallway to wait. She worries and holds her face in her hands, but Alex suddenly comes out and offers a terse, "Congratulations" before storming down the hall.
Arizona then calls Bailey into the room and she's welcomed with a round of applause as Alex leaves.
