Change the formula
mjarvis013 January 2019
I have been a fan of the disaster movie genre ever since I saw 'The Towering Inferno' in the cinema back in the day. And since then every disaster movie seems to follow the same formula. A couple, children, a builder etc. Having said that I thought the strain between the couple was well set up. I can accept the not so stellar special effects I can even take dodgy acting but please change the formula re children.

Cheap, but fun at times
Leofwine_draca21 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
INFERNO: SKYSCRAPER ESCAPE is a cheap disaster flick with more than a passing nod to the likes of THE TOWERING INFERNO and the more recent SKYSCRAPER. It's a cheaply-shot affair with the kind of exaggerated over-acting you tend to find in movies made by inexperienced directors, and of course it was inevitably shot in Bulgaria. However, despite the myriad problems, I found myself enjoying this cheesy adventure at times. Claire Forlani isn't bad as the feminist heroine and it's nice to see her tackling some of the stunts; she certainly convinces as the mother who'll risk anything to save her trapped kids from a burning building. Jamie Bamber is more wooden and the bad guys go way over the top, but there's a lot worse out there.

Not as bad as it could have been...
paul_haakonsen3 July 2018
Well I must admit to not being familiar with "Crystal Inferno" (or "Inferno: Skyscraper Escape") prior to stumbling upon it by blind luck. And I am a sucker for disaster movies, so of course I took the time and effort to sit down and watch this 2017 movie.

I will say that it was actually better than I had hoped for, because the vast majority of disaster movies available are just downright horrible and mauled by having grotesquely awful CGI. Luckily the was only so much CGI in "Crystal Inferno" that it didn't really matter that it looked fake sometimes. You could look past that, because the movie was not relying heavily on having a spectacular special effect to blow the audience away. I doubt they would have had the funds for that, but that is another issue.

"Crystal Inferno" is based more on being a story-driven movie that focuses on the characters and not having blazing special effects to make the audience go "oooh" and "aaah". As for the story, well it was entertaining enough actually, albeit very, very predictable and generic.

It should be said that "Crystal Inferno" has TV movie written all over it.

This is not among the worst of disaster movies that I have seen, and it is actually worth the time if you have an hour and a half to spare and got nothing preceding on the menu.

So bad - it's hilariously funny
neillynchehaun13 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It really is so bad you have to watch it. Wayne Williams has called out a lot of the continuity errors, which is a real irony given the plot line is about poor continuity in some photo evidence of adultery - excellent.

The acting is dreadful. I can only assume it's a combination of bad writing and direction as many of the actors have had fine performances in other productions. Riley Jackson trumps the rest of the cast for the most ridiculously exaggerated acting. (How did she get such a strong US accent with a British father, a US mother with a soft accent and growing up in Belgium?!!)

Obviously made for a US audience, with planted English, such as the Antwerpen fire fighters "Brandweer" having the English word "Fire" on the back of their uniforms and the "News" van being labelled in English, just in case you couldn't figure out what it was.

And how clever was the news reporter to jump straight into asking questions about the building's fire control systems, a few minutes into the incident!!!

Some continuity bloopers to add to Wayne's list:-
  • the fire crews putting on the English worded uniforms, climbing into their European fire trucks, driving to the fire in their US fire trucks and arriving there in their European trucks again,
  • the elevators in the 60+ floor building have about a dozen floor selection buttons
  • mother and daughter got progressively dirtier through the film for no apparent reason with the daughter picking up scratches on both cheeks, but they walk out of the building just after the final explosion, which destroyed the building, a lot cleaner and the daughter's right cheek had healed nicely,
  • the helicopter lands, keeps running while the passengers climb in and the pilot flicks about 20 switches (what the hell) in order to take off, no wonder it was predictably caught in a blast from 40 stories lower down,
  • while falling the helicopter spins, but the instruments (artificial horizon) indicate it's rolling,
  • the sound effect for the crashed helicopter is a crackling fire, but there isn't the slightest visible hint of any flames,
  • what the hell were all the fire fighters doing outside the building at the fire trucks, did any actually go in,
  • most unconvincing elevator shaft ever.

Look out for the engineer wearing a yellow helmet, in the background, just before the explosion. He's so funny, wobbling his head back and forth in order to use a ratchet spanner or socket, very badly.

What's with all the random steel girders loitering in the ceiling space, waiting to fall out on their victims below, one of whom gets up and limps out of the building.

And there must be lots more. Seriously watch this film, but be prepared to enjoy how bad it is.

This is a really awful movie...
rjsdavis15 December 2017
Acting is straight out of stage-school. Wooden and rigid.

The plot is poor. The dialogue/script is very, very poor. This isn't even TV movie quality.

How on earth did Claire Forlani fall from Meet Joe Black to this rubbish? Avoid this. Don't waste 93 minutes of your life.

EDIT: I wrote after having watched the first 20-25 minutes. I wish I could now give it a lower score, as the film just got progressively worse... What Claire Forlani's character did in the lift shaft at about 55 mins is simply ludicrous. The acting surrounding an aerial accident a bit later is even worse.

I wish I could unwatch this diatribe.

I can't believe this movie cost 2 million Euro to make
williamsw-117 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
It looks like it cost about a tenth of that. The fact that they had that much funding to work with and produced this drivel is just pathetic. OK, I'm sure that a fair portion of it must have gone to Forlani and Bamber, but why they signed on for this totally escapes me. They both recently completed other projects prior to this and also have new movies in the pipeline, so it's not like either are desperate for work.

This movie falls flat in so many ways. The person pitching this must have been really impressive because there was barely enough content for 30 minutes let alone an hour and 30 minutes. Scenes that should be short in order to create tension are stretched out to fill the running time. The effect was like having your teeth extracted in slow motion without any anaesthetic. The dialogue is so bad I'm convinced it was contracted out to the lowest bidder on Upwork. The same goes for the special FX - I could have created them on my 5 year old PC in less than a day.

The saddest part is that, even though the plot, if you can call it that, borrows liberally from Towering Inferno and a bunch of other movies, with a bit of effort they could still have developed it into something worth watching. Yet, it is almost like they purposefully didn't even try. Why not allocate some time to Bamber's character confronting his wife about the pictures? Why not have her investigate their origin and the reason behind someone sending them? I can only guess because it would make one think more about this and wonder how the characters could not be suspicious of photos of this nature sent anonymously. Oh, not to mention that the children are able to discover that the photos are faked in a matter of minutes, yet the high priced lawyers had them analysed and were not able to disprove their authenticity. Their experts probably disappeared into one of the plot holes never to be seen again.

There are so many basic logic, continuity and practical errors it is clear they never bothered to consult technical advisers. Here are just a couple of examples: 1) Bamber's character is heading down the stairs and is not able to continue due to smoke, so attempts to exit the stairwell at that floor, but the door handle is too hot. Why is the handle hot if it is a few floors up from the fire? 2) He then attempt to cover his mouth and go down the stairs through the smoke, but succumbs to smoke inhalation. So where did the firefighters that found him come from? 3) They then proceed downward where he was not able to go previously and arrive at the conclusion that they have reached the point of origin because the door is hot. Seriously? 4) This is supposed to be a huge multi-storey building, yet it only has one stairwell. I'm guessing they paid the building inspectors to ignore that... 5) The building in the marketing pictures is clearly not the same building as the one in the movie, as the shape it different and it is clearly much taller. 6) Also, the building in the pictures is virtually destroyed, whereas in the movie almost all visible damage is limited to the 20th floor. 7) At one point Beaumont refers to the lawyers "down" on the 60th floor, whereas the building clearly has nowhere near 60 floors. 8) When the two guys head out to the helipad, one can clearly see it is an older building with peeling paint and rusted girders and not newly constructed. 9) The electricity to the lift went out, yet they were later able to "ground" it. 10) In fact, just about everything in respect of the lift is totally unbelievable. My understanding is that legally all modern lifts are required to have battery backup. Usually, in event of a power outage, the lift goes to the next floor, opens the doors and then shuts the lift down to prevent further usage. They are also required to have an alarm in case of emergency. This used to be a button, but in modern lifts it is generally an intercom that runs off the battery backup so that it remains operational in event of a power outage. 11) At one point in the movie one is shown what is happening from the perspective of the building's security cameras and one can clearly see the two children stuck in the lift. So are we then expcted to assume that there is nobody monitoring the cameras?

I honestly wasn't trying to nitpick. These shortcomings are just so glaringly obvious, one has to wonder how this movie was ever made. If I can save even one person from wasting 90 minutes of their life, then writing this review will have been worthwhile.

Just Awful
whooperdooper7 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is appalling. It had the potential to be quite good I suppose, but along with the terrible effects and even worse acting, it was almost painful to watch. The actress playing the daughter was especially atrocious. Her amateur overacting was so diabolical, I celebrated as she disappeared down the elevator shaft. Unfortunately she survived but it was at least a brief respite. I hope her parents demanded a refund from the, what must have been, mediocre acting school she attended. The other actors weren't much better, in fact, the whole thing shall forever be imprinted on my brain as a reminder that I really must check imdb reviews before watching anything.

My Review Of "Inferno: Skyscraper Escape" aka "Crystal Inferno"
ASouthernHorrorFan30 June 2018
The story lacks originality and follows well established tropes with villainous corporate types, wholesome archetypes and just-add-wickedness mayhem. A real Syfy ready summer flick. The one positive and strong exception to this slightly mundane premise is the female lead of Supergirl/Wonder Woman heroine-ness of Claire Forlani'mother/professional character. Sadly the miss use of Jamie Bamber was a obvious disappointment, to equal Forlani.

The special effects are the typical display of scaled-down practical tricks that one expects from this level of disaster movie blended with lower budgeted CGI effects. This doesn't mean that the film is bad or cheap, just didn't want to equate "Inferno: Skyscraper Escape" to the Syfy channel, but yeah this one would work beautifully on their lineup. The effect have ample quality and impact with only a mild drop in CGI quality.

Overall the movie gives a straight-to-Redbox, low budget performance that works as far as action entertainment value for fans of microbudget disaster/action flicks. There is a strong female lead that plays to the heart of the story. There is some superbad acting and some melodrama that falls flat but for what it is, "Inferno: Skyscraper Escape" is a decent flick that should satisfy fans of this type film.

Wooden doesn't cut it
brianallen-054354 August 2022
My eyeballs have got splinters after watching this atrocity.

So many things just plain wrong it's hard to know where to start, but since a lot of the film is based around the elevators I'll start there.

I don't know how their elevators work but they look to be held up with steel bars akin to scaffolding poles, not cable, even sounded hollow when they clanked together lol.

And then there's the whole "Skyscraper on fire, let's just send a couple of fire engines" and that's all that was there for the duration.

In the office, their way of destroying incriminating evidence was to put it in a metal box with a fire inside it, granted it did have Hot Surface stickers on it, but I really really doubt such a device exists as an office shredder lol.

And then when the helicopter crashed, it had a couple of impacts with the building on the way down but landed on the skids which is fair enough, every panel of the chopper was dinted with paint scraped off.

But throughout the whole film, everyone from the kids to the TV News reporter, to the Fire captain was in real danger of catching fire due to how dry and wooden they were.

I really can't think of any redeeming part of the film apart from the end credits, not that there was anything special about them, but at least it signified the end of the film.

Don't bother watching, it's 90+ minutes you'll never get back.

There are many faults with this movie but are you watching it to find fault or be entertained? If you can forget that superman is not actually real and the A team are not actually super heroes, you will thoroughly enjoy this movie. This is up to you. I really enjoyed it.

This Towering Inferno Is A Wet Flannel...
P3n-E-W1s36 March 2020
It's nice to see somebody other than the Americans and Canadians taking on a disaster movie. Though the trouble is the film is lacking in the action they usually possess.

I will have to give the writers, Regina Luvitt and Philip J Ross, credit for making the story larger than the screen can handle. It is certainly one ambitious story. Brianna works for a company overseeing the construction of a new skyscraper in Antwerp. It is her business to run all the safety checks and confirm the building has been constructed to code, which we know it hasn't. The building's owner, Lucas Beaumont, decides that Brianna needs to be taken care off. Instead of killing her as he did her predecessor, he has his lackey discredit her with her husband. They create a series of faked photographs that give the impression of an affair. The hubby, Tom, is an idiot and believes the piccies. This course of action finds them at the lawyers months later... in the same skyscraper that Brianna should have been working. Due to cheap parts and materials, the building catches fire while the family are inside. WOW, that is a lot of backstories and it should have developed the characters and their relationships. The only trouble is the writers and the director, Eric Summer, blast through it without concern. It's a waste and as such is pointless. We could have started the whole film in the Lawyers offices. Which would have left extra time for the wonderful action to follow.

Except, there's very little action. What should have been an action tour-de-force for Claire Forlani as Brianna as she repels and climbs through a burning building to save her children and her marriage is nothing more than a sauntering shuffle through smoke and haze. There was so much in the main body of the film that Summers' could have accomplished to construct excitement. I mean, you're dealing with heights and fire and fire at great heights for Godsake!

As for the acting, this is just about as average as you can get. Nobody really gets into their characters. To be fair, when you see what type of characters they are you can't blame the actors and actresses. The worst, by a country mile, is the two children. It's not too surprising though because everybody is stereotypical as are the kids, so perhaps they were to come across as annoying, which they both do well.

This is a film to steer clear of. If you are wanting a nice and easy, leave your brain at the door, entertaining action film this is not the one. Do not be fooled by the trailer. Watch the trailer and enjoy that instead. It is the best part of the film after all.

Please swing on over and check out my Disastrous list to see where this damp drivel charted. You may find something better to watch.

Inferno: Skyscraper Escape
Prismark1024 July 2022
Coming over as a Video on Demand Dwayne Johnson Skyscraper ripoff.

Disaster hits a skyscraper after the developers cut corners on safety.

Divorcing couple Brianna (Claire Forlani) and Tom (Jamie Barber) find themselves having to rescue their children who sneaked in after coming across some evidence that their mum was not cheating.

The kids find themselves trapped as a fire rages throughout the building. It is left to Brianna to turn into an action woman.

Outside of the main leads the acting is weak. The special effects look cheap, although there are one or two nice shots despite the low budget.

The movie is merely functional without much of a story. The dialogue is bad.

Every Cliche In the Book
mandagrammy12 September 2020
Okay, this film does include every disaster flick cliche in the book, but that isn't the worse part of the film. The acting is way beyond amateurish in almost every case. The worse offenders are the kids, but then again they are young. Unfortunately, there are so many plot holes, you can drive a truck through them. Given all that, if you are in the mood for a mindless bit of film that doesn't require any thinking on your part, and you do enjoy disaster flicks, I wouldn't call this a total waste of time, unless you have something better to do.

Nifty disaster opus
Woodyanders29 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Faulty wiring causes an explosion in a skyscraper that leads to a raging fire. Estranged couple Brianna (a strong and feisty portrayal by Claire Forlani) and Tom (a solid and likeable performance by Jamie Barber) must work together to save themselves and their two children from the towering inferno.

Director Eric Summer relates the enjoyable and engrossing story at a snappy pace, generates a good deal of tension, and stages the exciting action with aplomb. The sound acting by the capable cast keeps this movie humming: Riley Jackson as perky daughter Anne, Isaac Rouse as wimpy son Ben, Nigel Barber as unscrupulous cross-cutting jerk Lucas Beaumont, Atanas Screbrev as smarmy sleazeball Eric Steele, Nathan Cooper as nice guy Paul, and Lorina Kamburorova as foxy secretary Adria. The CGI effects are pretty decent considering the modest budget. A cool little flick.

Cheesey goodness
trtletat212 January 2019
My husband and I love silly, over acted, horrible plot line movies and this doesnt disappoint. Addressing the elevator scene with the son and mom, all I can say is, hopefully that encourages the boy to start working out. As long as the cast had a good time making it, it's all gravy baby. There are good bad movies and bad bad movies. This is the former imo. Just embrace the bad decisions, overacting, and improbable scenarios.

Nothing new or original here, predictable ( I won't give spoilers away but you can guess what will happen throughout!) absolutely unbelievable in places and seemingly beyond the physical abilities of most 'normal' humans and their bodies! Please don't waste your time!

The little girl in the movie was so dislikeable, that I wished her character was killed off. When I see a movie this amateurish, I wonder if the actors, writers and the director realized how awful the project was going to turn out.

Bad but not awful
pangos-3259718 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
3/10 This was your basic setup for cheesy disaster movie. A couple having (very poorly portrayed) marital problems, one of them is an expert in high-rise structures gets trapped up in a high-rise after an explosion. As usual, their 2 kids were also in the building just above the explosion. The majority of the movie revolves around the 2 parents trying to get their kids out of the elevator and out of the building. The elevator scenes were hilarious, and the mom being able to one-arm hold her teenage son while grappling in the elevator was one of the worst scenes. The acting was pretty bad all around. I actually think the son(Isaac Rouse) did the best in the movie, and he was the only one who actually portrayed their character in a believable fashion. Jaime Bamber did not turn in his best performance, but he was still better than pretty much anyone else.

The writing was quite poor as well. There is one strange thing. The caption under the title is "The only way out is up". However, the family escapes the building by going DOWN, both by using the elevator shaft and the stairs. My guess is that was on the original promo movie poster and just never got changed.

I would not recommend buying this, but if you like this genre and have a chance to see it for free, it might be ok for a one-time viewing.
