Plans are afoot for a sequel to Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. But what made the original so special, and where might the sequel go?
Last week, an extremely cautious Winona Ryder confirmed on Late Night With Seth Myers that a sequel to Tim Burton's beloved 1988 haunted house comedy Beetlejuice was finally in the works. Ryder will be reprising her role as Lydia Deetz, with Burton back behind the megaphone and Michael Keaton, fresh from a career-resurrecting turn in Birdman (2014), again starring as 'the ghost with the most'.
Ryder's announcement was met with the inevitable woops and cheers from Myers' studio audience, but fans of Burton's breakthrough feature will be seeking reassurances that the forthcoming follow-up will remain true to the spirit of its predecessor.
For those who've never seen it, Beetlejuice tells the story of Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis), a happily married couple living...

Winona Ryder is set to rejoin Michael Keaton for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice 2...
Just because we've not heard anything on the project for a little while, it doesn't mean there hasn't been progress. Plans remain afoot for Beetlejuice 2, which Tim Burton may well be getting to after he's finished directing his current project, Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children.
Michael Keaton is set to reprise the title role for the new movie, which is being penned by Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg. And now Winona Ryder too has confirmed she's set to return for the movie.
"I think I can confirm it because Tim Burton did this interview", she said on Late Night With Seth Meyers in the Us.
"It was very hush-hush, top secret", she said, "and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said, 'oh yeah,...

"It may be the Fu money that we all dream about", says Beetlejuice co-writer and co-producer Larry Wilson on Beetlejuice 2...
Head back to the late 1980s, and Larry Wilson was on his way to becoming a studio executive. He was working as director of development for Walter Hill at the time, but he had an itch to write. And, teaming up with Michael McDowell, the pair penned Beetlejuice, sold it to The Geffen Company, who in turn got Tim Burton interested.
Larry Wilson recalled this in a chat with us, remembering that he'd beforehand given the script to an executive at Universal, who went on to ask him "why are you going to squander [your career] for this piece of shit?". Wilson had the last laugh there.
Beetlejuice 2 has been gathering momentum of late, with Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg working on a screenplay. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are both mooted to return.

Writer and producer Larry Wilson tells us about Cindy, Aliens, Young Sherlock Holmes and Beetlejuice. Plus: his thoughts on Beetlejuice 2...
Larry Wilson is a man who's had more than one life, it seems. Originally a writer, he then moved to development and the world of studio executives. And then? He moved back to writing, with Beetlejuice, which he also co-produced.
Here, he chats to us about his new webseries Cindy, as well as taking us back to the days of Beetlejuice, of bringing James Cameron to Aliens, and how Young Sherlock Holmes - a film based on his idea - was a disappointment to him.
Oh, and there's that Beetlejuice sequel too...
Let's start with what you're up to now, your webseries Cindy. I understand you pitched it originally to Nickelodeon, but it sounds like a show that's been swimming in your head for a while now. Can you tell us a bit about it?...
