Originally filmed in 3D, converted to 2D in post-production through an expensive and labor-intensive process called "beflattening".

For the volcano scene, Adam Mayfield really forgot how to speak Mandarin Chinese. Shooting the date scene two weeks later required two translators and a tutor to make him sound fluent.
The armor breastplate of Sillenias the half-elf went through 143 design revisions before the full prototype was built. The armor was so heavy, the FX crew realized it wouldn't be humanly possible for a performer to wear the suit, so the script was re-written to make the character a cartoon ghost instead.
Half of the volcano sequence was filmed on Iceland's famed Eyjafjallajökull. Filming was interrupted by seismic activity, so to stay on budget, the remainder of the scene was filmed on a scale model papier-mâché replica in Hemet, California. Shooting in the desert to match Iceland turned out to be quite tricky, requiring a lot of digital touch-ups and several actors had to be medically shrunk to 1/8th scale for consistency. During the pick-up shoot, the crepe paper lava actually caught fire during the final take, and the fearful reactions of the cast were quite real.
