The show does not depict real life interior design, and is hated by critics and designers alike. It has gotten a lot of negative feedback for its poor portrayal of interior design. In reality interior designers first speak with clients and get an extensively detailed report, of what the customers are looking for, what matters most to them, and how they would like to spend the budget. Most designers work closely with their clients, getting their aproval every step of the way and even go shopping with them.
Whereas in the show designers only get to speak to clients at the end to see if they love it or hate it. The designers are left to create rooms only based on their style, and with full control of the budget it often leads to very upset homeowners.
Each episode of the show sees four amateur interior designers decorate two desperate homes in a £15,000 makeover, with Celia Sawyer as the host.
The amateur designers in the show work for free.
They have 5 days to complete 1 room each and 1 room together. Two designers per home, 3 rooms total.
Despite being shown in a prime time 8pm timeslot on BBC1, none of the first three episodes made the BBC1 Top 30. The last three episodes were scheduled in a Sunday afternoon timeslot.
The series did receive repeat broadcasts on BBC2 during 2015 and 2018.
