A Tangled Mess
Hitchcoc28 October 2016
Waits is on the run. After killing one person and stealing another car, he seeks refuge at the home of his disabled mother. She has no idea what he is. He manipulates her and may actually be set to kill her if necessary. Harry is taken off the task force investigating the death of the police officer. He is told to continue investigating the death of the boy on the hill. His investigation leads to the boy's father who confesses to the murder, but has trouble with details. There is another issue with his story as well which I will not spoil. The episode ends with a startling discovery. The pacing of this series is wonderful. I love the intelligence of the writing and the excellent balance of plot. Welliver continues to be a complex and engaging character.

Like every other cop show...so far

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying this. However, it is not yet up to Connelly's source material (even though the author is a co-creator of the Amazon series). This episode features some very network-level writing and directing. In other words, take us there, but don't challenge us too much. It is rather by-the-numbers...and this despite co-creator Eric Overmyer having had a hand in St. Elsewhere, Homicide, and The Wire!

What bothered me most in this episode? The scenes between the escaped killer and his mother. It felt poorly scripted and directed, like it was just another in a long series of network or second-tier cable shows. In a word, I didn't buy it.

But I am five episodes into the first season, and I feel like this is heading somewhere. The Connelly books are great, and I expect the show to rise to that level...even if it takes a while to get there.

LA cops can't be that unaware

So if a fugitive has killed somebody, and is in the wind, where do you look? Under the rocks? How about his mother's house? NO, way too obvious. Or not. . .
