It's a good start.

Andy and Lance, members of The DMDC, The Danbury Metal Detecting Club are busy searching for The Holy Grail, when they are approached by Student Sophie.

I can understand why this series has such a huge following, this is the first time I've watched it, and I can see that I've been missing out. I really like the two central characters, Andy and Lance, and I can see at this stage that Lance is a bit sad, clearly still in love with his ex, Andy clearly had a passion for his work.

It's very dry, it's very subtle, this first episode seeks to introduce the characters, and set the scenario.

I enjoyed Terry's button presentation, I can understand why everyone was fast asleep, I have a feeling we'll be seeing more from him.

Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook were terrific. I look forward to more of this amiable, charming comedy.

7/10.

After returning for a Christmas special. It was good to revisit this genteel comedy show.

It is really a story about friendship between Lance (Toby Jones) and Andy (Mackenzie Crook.) Two detectorists who are members of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club.

In this episode the club gets a new member, Sophie a history student at university.

Like a lot of detectorists, Lance and Andy are searching for the big one. The holy grail which might be the Holy Grail or the Ark of the Covenant rather then some Saxon treasure.

Maybe getting permission from a farmer to search his land might lead to a big find.

The first episode is really about introducing the characters, especially Lance's complex relationship with his ex wife who left him for her new lover. It looks like Lance is wasting money on those scented candles.
