Shimla
Prismark1025 April 2016
If you are a fan of the Channel 4 series Indian Summers then the final episode of Indian Hill Railways would have be familiar.

When the heat of Delhi became stifling, Shimla would become the administrative of the British Raj nestled in the cooler foothills of the Himalayas.

The Kalka–Shimla Railway was built in 1898 to connect Shimla with the rest of the Indian rail system.

The town also has many visible legacies of empire from the people, the houses, churches, schools, town hall and traditions that date back to the 19th century empire. There are descendants from colonial times and this programme features the strongest set of characters in the series.

John Whitmarsh-Knight, an Anglo Indian after a life time spent in industry around the world has returned to settle in the land of his birth as a teacher.

Maqsood is a railway porter who has migrated from the Indian part of Kashmir to make a living away from his divided land.

Sanjay the station master is hoping for promotion when his boss Bataljit gets his transfer elsewhere. His family has already left but he is looked after by the elderly Mr Achroo Ram who has been looking after the various station masters for years. Bataljit also waits for the snow to fall a sight he wants to see before he leaves Shimla.

An enjoyable programme that seemed less contrived than others in this uneven three part series.
