average stuff

Mediocre tale , with a laid back low energy vibe. The two leads are an unconvincing match as two fragile people, but somehow it works. Maxwell Schneider plays it real, though I've never encountered a chilled parking enforcement officer who would tolerate being spat on. Lots of quirky dialogue and introspection and insecurity, sometimes coming over as unscripted or natural dialogue. The long wait for parents to arrive does not work.

An enjoyable wrong-com

This grew on me as I watched it. I found the acting too naturalistic to begin with but the film stuck with it and stayed true to itself and I warmed to the story, the characters and their predicaments.

There is some great humour, including deadpan in the face of the bizarre or extreme, which was done very well indeed.

I felt for and rooted for the main characters.

I am not sure if my TV was playing up but the colour palette seemed close to monochrome at times. That may have been to contribute to the feel of the piece, giving a background of blandness against which the unexpected events stand out more vividly.

Solid date movie

I haven't written one of these in quite a while, but I felt compelled to let folks know that this is a cute flick.I'd never heard of or seen these actors before but the characters of Max and Allie were solidly played and insanely likable. The chemistry between these two is apparent from the start and only gets stronger as the movie progresses. I liked this a lot, and were I dating, it would be a must see. Maxwell Schneider and Gabrielle Whelan play Max and Allie. I don't know that they'll ever be household names, but they are close to perfect in this. Stick with it. It starts a little slow and it doesn't end until the credits do.

A Hidden Gem!

Likable characters with an unpredictable plot. Loads of dry humor. This is one of the most fun flicks I've seen in a long time, and it is a film I will remember. And, it passes a major test: I will watch this again.

Silly... daft... boring...

Warning: Spoilers
Ok, there were at times some humorous moments and the movie did get mildly better as it went on, but certainly doesn't deserve the 7.2 IMDB rating. 7.2...??? Come on!

Starting with a (ineffective) similarity to "Sideways" (2004), early in the film when she was punching the "Max" around his *soft* body, the sound-effect for each blow is obviously crudely made by two planks of wood being smashed together, courtesy of what must be a particularly poor sound-effects department.

The acting starts off somewhat mediocre and not particularly believable. As the film progressed, the two leads do seem to settle into their roles together and the acting becomes just a *little bit* better. However, the scene in which the two visit the ex-boyfriend is just totally ludicrous from all aspects.

Later in the film, the dance scene went on for just way too long, and the monologues/soliloquys just didn't work at all. The post-coital analysis and the board-game playing left me confused by their total pointlessness, except to put it down to time-filling of a weak and insufficient script.

Overall, these modern filmmakers would do well to take a lesson from the old rom-coms of the 1960s (Doris Day/Rock Hudson/James Garner etc). These old romantic comedies were wittily written, very humorous, well directed and acted and, simply, a pleasure to watch. Very few modern attempts even come close.

"When She Showed Up", I'm afraid, is just no more than lame in comparison.

Absolute rot
SamPamBam27 July 2019
Only made it thru the first ten minutes or so. A horrid viewing experience. First ten minutes the lead male gets screamed at by a vicious female who even spits on him, goes home is attacked by another vicious violent female who has broken into his apartment, screamed at on the phone by her mother...horrid females all. This is why men go to work, to get any from b*tches like these. How or Why someone made such rot just shows the absolute deterioration of hollywood thanks to people like tarantino.
