Every time a bell rings...
kz917-16 December 2017
Harold is out to get his wings, but first he must help a heartbroken woman see what is right in front of her. He must match her with her childhood friend before Christmas Day.

So the "angel" is Harold the "ornament" is a family heirloom that her grandfather gave to her grandmother when they met. As she places the ornament on her tree, ding-dong the woman's doorbell rings and she finds carolers dresses exactly like the ornament. Coincidence?

The movie that follows is delightfully funny and charming.

Worth a view.

The Harold Angel
boblipton17 November 2014
Jessalyn Gilsig has just broken up with her boyfriend and has lost the audition for the solo at the community center where she volunteers. Little does she know that her boss is in love with her -- neither does he -- but thanks to her guardian angel, things are going to turn out just fine for them. However, that doesn't matter.

Many of these Hallmark TV romantic comedies succeed, when they do, because of the major actors in minor supporting roles. In this one, however, it is Sergio de Zio as the on-assignment angel, Harold, who makes this movie. With his old-fashioned, formal clothes, direct gaze and emphatic, nasal voice, he owns every scene he's in and makes his absence in others telling. Of course everything is shot to emphasize him, but that's more than okay, since he makes it worthwhile.

The rest of the story is competent and workaday, although the other actors are fine in their scenes. There are the usual details that make me wonder if the movie-makers have ever been in New York City, where they set this movie: the store has a big second story sign announcing it has been in business for 25 years; no New Yorker looks at those signs and do they change it every year? Everyone lives in huge apartments. However, it's still a fine movie.

Angel on my tree
TheLittleSongbird25 May 2021
2014 was a bit hit and miss when it came to Hallmark Christmas films, and perhaps even Hallmark in general. While there were good ones such as 'A Royal Christmas' and 'Christmas Under Wraps', there were also misfires like 'One Starry Christmas' and especially 'A Cookie Cutter Christmas'. There has never been any bias against Hallmark, far from it. Have actually been impressed by a good deal of their work, though a lot of it is average or less especially in the past few years even when judging them for as they are intended to be.

A very strong contender for the best of the 2014 Hallmark Christmas films is 'Angels and Ornaments'. Was not expecting a massive amount, and it delivers a lot better than expected. While not masterpiece level or perfect, there is a lot that works absolutely beautifully and it is very highly successful when taking the film for what it is. Not only is 'Angels and Ornaments' to me the best of Hallmark's 2014 Christmas films it is also perhaps among their best ever work, with it being one of their not many very good ones.

It's not a perfect film. Dave is a rather dull and one-dimensional character and Graham Abbey doesn't have an awful lot of spark playing too.

Did think too that the ending was too easily telegraphed and too tidy.

However, as said a lot of things work absolutely beautifully. 'Angels and Ornaments' pleases visually, lovely festive locations attractively and never drably or garishly shot. The music isn't as intrusive as it tends to be with Hallmark while the direction gets the job done well. The script doesn't get too cheesy or sentimental and does have a more natural flow when it becomes more settled. The story is not too heavy while taking itself seriously and is both warm-hearted and has a light touch when necessary.

On the whole as well it isn't too predictable, there are elements that are different than the usual Hallmark Christmas film and they are elements that feature a lot but not rammed down the throat. On the most part, the characters are worth caring about. Jessalyn Gilsig is a charming female lead but do agree about Sergio Di Zio giving the best performance and making the film. He did start off a little too intense at first, but softens quite quickly and brings understated sincerity to an entertaining and wise character without any signs of being on autopilot.

Concluding, very well done. 8/10.

In looking at other reviews I see that Harold is pretty popular. For me he was annoying and Sergio Di Zio was overly passionate. Toward the end, it was understandable when he was running out of time, but he was the too intense early on. And I know you have to suspend credibility in these movies, but I just didn't see why Dave would trust him. In addition, I never warmed up to Dave. I didn't see any spark to him.

I liked the job Jessalyn Gilsig did, with one exception. The exception - I didn't think her voice was outstanding, as you would expect for someone aspiring to solo, not even in the special song. She was nice to listen to, but just that - nice. The song itself was also nice.

Since many other reviewers liked the acting, at least Di Zio, maybe you will too, in which case the story in this movie is good and has layers. We get the full story only after peeling them away.

Di Zio's movie
mbiv19 November 2019
This is a Hallmark movie, so the ending is predictable, but it features an excellent performance by Sergio Di Zio who plays an angel tasked with bringing two people together. That alone makes this worth watching once.

Beginning to End

This was a real "10" for a Christmastime movie. They may all arrive at the same predictable place in the end, but the journeys vary. This was a sweet journey. The plot was a bit intriguing and the casting was very well done, in my opinion. Of course, it may have gotten a little "soupy" in the end, but it's a Christmastime movie and I loved it. Probably my favorite for this season. I always make sure to check out every new Hallmark Christmas movie or Lifetime or where ever I find them. 2014's were, overall, pretty darn good. If you like the them, be sure to see this one. I actually watched it twice! Good story too! Christmas Under Wraps was good too.

Not Great Not The Worse Either
Christmas-Reviewer3 March 2018
Review Date 3/3/2018

PLEASE BEWARE OF SOME REVIEWERS THAT ONLY HAVE ONLY ONE REVIEW. I HAVE OVER 400 REVIEWS OF "CHRISTMAS RELATED FILMS & SPECIALS" WHEN ITS A POSITIVE THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH THE PRODUCTION. NOW I HAVE NO AGENDA! I REVIEW MOVIES & SPECIALS AS A WAY TO KEEP TRACK OF WHAT I HAVE SEEN! I HAVE DISCOVERED MANY GEMS IN MY QUEST TO SEE AS MANY " C H R I S T M A S " MOVIES AS I CAN.

Now Someone keeps reporting my reviews. I guess they are jealous because I do tell the truth. I want to point out that I never make snide remarks about actors weight or real life sexual orientation. If there acting is terrible or limited "I talk about that". If a story is bad "I will mention that" So why am I being "picked on"? IMDB? When one of my reviews gets deleted IMDB will not even tell me what someone found offensive. Well on to this review.

Corrine's holiday season gets an unexpected dose of romance when she meets the mysterious Harold, who is on a deadline from a higher power to help Corrine find her true love by Christmas Eve. As the clock ticks down to Harold's deadline, Corrine must decide if she will open up to Christmas love.

This is not a bad film but it could have been better. I will see it again someday. It just not a film that I am in a hurry to see again.

A love story
46yroldmale12 December 2014
Sergio Di Zio wonderfully underplays his role as Harold, the Christmas angel that has a no nonsense approach to true love. I am coming at this from a different perspective than most people who will watch this film because I have lost love to death, knowing that I will never again be with my wife during this life. Casual couples who take one another for granted may be caught up in in the same predicament as Corrine and Dave in the film if they refuse to put themselves out for love. At the center of the simple storyline is that Corrine's grandfather had to go off to war and never came back. He loved fully, but his relationship was cut short through no fault of his own. In what I think is the pivotal scene when angel Harold unbelievably asks Dave, "You're not willing to fight for her?" we see the pathos of true love and his all-consuming disappointment in casual love. I certainly felt it. I was with Harold all the way. Don't take love for granted, it's embedded in human beings and human beings are fragile creatures.

A good old-fashioned inspirational
MickyG33311 January 2023
7.4 stars.

Our leads make a great team in this movie, the interactions are endearing, there is no shortage of depth. The acting overall is good, and the directing is obviously good, something that can't be faked - you either "do or do not" with the x-factor, there is no "try" and it comes mainly from direction, and sometimes from a special actor. The female lead reals you into her heartwarming personality, your heart goes out to her, and simultaneously is magnetized, and the male lead in his own right is convincing as a man who lights up when she is around. Neither of them realizes how much they really love each other, they've been friends since school, they've perfected a life long friend zone existence, now it's effortless. That's a very long time to be best friends, and not the usual sort, these two seem to be of similar personalities, easy going, kind, gentle, not assertive types. It's understandable how they could be frozen in time.

The rest of the characters are secondary, I could take or leave the heavenly messengers aspect of the story, and while it's essential to the plot, it's not essential to the point. I feel that if you watch enough of these sorts of films, maybe you'll build up just enough courage to go find your soulmate. A guy can hope.

Final note: her singing is clear and pure, but just a bit odd sounding, like she's singing for Sesame Street or the Muppets.

Totally ULTRA-LAME!.......Best feature: it ended!
adoptshelterpetstoday20 December 2014
Oh, puleeeezzzz! Give me a break!!

With this movie being ultra-awful, I'm convinced Hallmark's Christmas movie producers' intentions were to laughingly prove viewers could enjoy ULTRA-LAME!

But they were actually insulting viewers' intelligence! The only feature I enjoyed was that it ENDED!

The tremendously annoying "Harold" showed up numerous times out of nowhere, without a hint of how he showed up.....Turn around this way or that way...or look up... or open the house door...and suddenly there he was every time yak, yak, yakking away...and uninvited!..............His voice was BEYOND annoying! (was that intentional? if so, why?)...............Did the goof ever decide who he was?? Oh, who really cares?!

Hmmm...which was worse: the female star's atrocious "singing" or her lame "acting"??

The plot dragged and dragged and dragged pointlessly.

The film desperately needs to be destroyed immediately! I'd hate to think the next generation would think this stupidity is what we thought was entertaining or enjoyable in our time!

The Winning Formula
USN-Retired28 November 2014
My wife asked, "Why do you like this movie but don't like movies about Santa?" There are two classes of formulaic Christmas movies produced by Hallmark. One class succeeds most of the time, given a good script and good actors. The other doesn't. To be successful, it must be believable if we can suspend our prejudices. When it comes to angels, etc., we all want to believe they exist. Even an agnostic like me, wishes this to be true. On the other hand, when it comes to fantasy Christmas involving Santa, we all know it isn't believable so we just ride with it because, after all, it is fantasy. With Angels and Ornaments, we have a wonderful script and a mesmerizing Sergio Di Zio (H). Coupled with Jessalyn Gilsig…well, the magic works. This is on par with The Christmas Card, one of the best Christmas movies made in recent years.

A cute, fun movie
herrcarter-9216117 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was fun to watch. Harold the angel was especially engaging, probably more so than Dave, the actual love interest. Given that the actor who plays Harold is roughly the same age as the actor who plays Dave, you almost wonder if Corrine might have considered Harold a potential prospect at some point.

I'm kind of a sucker for movies like this that have a fantasy element like angels. It was fun to see Harold encouraging Corrine and Dave to give each other a chance. The relationship between Corrine and Dave seemed pretty genuine. There could have been a bit more chemistry, but all in all, I thought they had nice interactions with each other. I found her relationship with the other guy Tim a little unbelievable. Not sure why she was still interested in him. He wasn't that good looking, or that smooth a talker. Maybe it was her lack of self confidence that kept her going back to him.

I think the whole angel dynamic with Harold could have been handled a little better. He seemed way too pushy about trying to meddle in Dave and Corrine's love lives, even though he barely knew them. There needed to be some establishment of a friendship between them before he did this. Also, I think that the fact that he was Corrine's grandfather should have been more of a surprise that should have been saved till close to the end, and it should have been a surprise even for Harold. It became obvious way too early in the story for it to have much dramatic impact.

Also, the whole backstory of Harold/Henry wasn't the best. He bemoaned time and time again how he had lost the love of his life, but he hadn't personally done anything to lose her. All he did was serve his country faithfully in war, send home romantic music regularly to his wife, and end up getting killed in action through no fault of his own. Why should he have been punished by not being able to be with his wife for 70 years? And why did he have to fulfill this one mission to get Dave and Corrine together (and by Christmas, no less) in order to redeem himself? Why exactly then? Why not a few years earlier, as Dave and Corrine had been friends since childhood?

A much better plot line might have been that Harold/Henry had done something wrong to estrange himself from his wife before tragically dying, and that was the thing he had to atone for. Even better, maybe it could have been that Harold/Henry was with his sweetheart long enough for her to get pregnant with Corrine's mom, but he failed to do what was necessary to keep her and she ended up marrying someone else, leading to his regret and earnest hope that Dave wouldn't make the same mistake. It also would have been more compelling if Corrine was actually going to get married to the slimeball Tim after years of ignoring Dave, creating an urgent situation that Harold needed to come down to help rectify before it was too late. Maybe Hallmark should consider hiring me as a consultant for their scripts next time, ha ha.

A couple of other nitpicks. The actor who plays Harold was in his 40's and looked like maybe he was closer to 50, but as Corrine's grandfather who served in WWII, he would have been a much younger man. Not sure how well the part would have been played by a younger actor, but it could have been interesting if he had been a young 20-year-old, wise beyond his apparent years. Also, I hated the cover picture on the DVD. Both the main actors looked much worse than they did in the actual movie. Can't Hallmark at least take a decent photo for its DVD cover?

Hope it doesn't sound like I didn't like this movie, because I did. I do think that with a few tweaks to the script, it could have been lots better, but I did enjoy it. Definitely one of the better Hallmark offerings.

Not that memorable
jandefischer17 November 2014
The twelve new Hallmark movies for the Christmas season of 2014 have been disappointing and this may be the worst of all. There seems to be no original story, no refreshing dialogue and only fair acting. I'm getting somewhat tired of these Hallmark movies that are supposed to be set in the USA and clearly feature all Canadian actors. The lead in this one who is a good actress with a large TV background is not only Canadian but French Canadian playing a woman from New York City. The accents give them all away. If Hallmark would set these films in Canada I could accept it, but they are too cheap and trying to fool the TV viewers. Overall, however it was the very weak plot that doomed this film.

Best Christmas movie in quite awhile
sdbowman2 January 2015
OK, call me sentimental, but I love Christmas romance movies. This my wife of 10 years and my favorite time of year. She says that she is amazed that she actually found a guy who loves these movies. We don't have lots of free time, so sometimes it might take us 3 evenings to watch one movie. This one was a real tear jerker. Add my love of good music to a good romance movie and you've got me. We especially loved that the writer made room for two different romances in the same script. We had never seen any of the actors in anything before, and were pleasantly surprised at how good the acting was. If you like this kind of thing, please watch it with the one you love!

Original romantic movie with a twist
Abettysdesk28 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Like one of the reviewers said, "give it a chance." I almost didn't watch it either. The beginning was a bit slow + rough, but the actors who played David, Corrine and "Harold" were very good and believable, and I liked the store and stage settings. (Don't miss this great song!) After watching the beginning, I fast forwarded to the middle (which seemed really good), and when I couldn't tell what was going on, I decided to go ahead and give it a try and went back to the beginning. Yay!! I'm soooo glad I did. It was a very sweet and touching movie... As one of the reviewer's alluded to: you can't *always* tell in the first few minutes if it's going to be a good one or not. (I do that, too.) ;) There were some very inspirational and meaningful (and surprising) twists and turns in the story. I really liked it a lot! (This next section may be considered somewhat of a SPOILER, but that's why we like Hallmark movies; for HEAs, or Happily Ever Afters.) ;) If you are a romantic, like me, you will like this movie. OK? (And I DID like the year later scene.) Hang in there and watch this movie all the way from beginning to end. Don't fast-forward or you will miss important parts. Then write a review in response to mine. :-) Enjoy!

Warning: Spoilers
I cried through out this movie. After Harold talks with a man.

And tells him his story of love and loss. Sergio played the part so well just his expression was so real I could feel the pain of this character. I am not easily moved by many of Hallmark movies they are so predictable but this movie just grabbed and spoke to me. I have watched it 7 times. This movie you have to pay attention or important info will be missed. If you watch this movie do it with and open mind and pay close attention to what it said. It to me made my Christmas. Thank the actors and Hallmark for this wonderful movie. This movie makes me feel so warm and thankful for my loving family. We never know how much time we have on this earth. We need to be thankful for all the blessings in our lives. This movie to me strongly encourages this. I love, this movie.

Best Hallmark Christmas Movie
bwest-7276316 November 2017
I love Hallmark Christmas movies, but for me Angels and Ornaments is the best. Heartwarming and moving. I thought the actors were great and the movie Theme was touching with a wonderful, heartwarming twist. Mostly I loved the music. If you don't like this movie then you don't have a sentimental bone in your body.

Give it a chance
DilbertW0118 November 2014
When we watch the Hallmark Christmas movies, we usually know in the first 30 minutes or so if we are going to like it. Sometimes they start off so slow that they "don't grab us" or spark interest. When we first started Angels and Ornaments, we were almost to the point of cutting it off. Fortunately, we didn't. It does start off a bit slow, but there is a point (no spoilers here) that it changes. One review about this movie mentioned that the story is not real deep. I agree with that, but it does not diminish the enjoyment of the story. If you like those Christmas movies that will have a tear to the eye or having a good happy-cry at the end, this movie will not disappoint. Again, I am not going to spoil the movie. Now, here's to hoping the Hallmark will release it on DVD like they have other movies this Christmas (2014) season.

Better than most Christmas TV programs
rbrinega-984-56134825 November 2014
This Christmas TV movie does not stink (most do, some really badly). It was a story that I'd never seen before, and the characters had a believability despite the fact that this was a fantasy. Of the characters' performances, Harold, the angel was great, showing really good intensity and real feeling (not your typical angelic performance). In a nice twist he, as an angel, wasn't some know-it-all. Dave, the store owner, was game, sincere, and believable -- but not a total standout performance -- I suspect that he was constrained by some of the dialog. However Corrine was the most typical Hallmark heroine -- ie., a weak characterization. As other folks indicated, stating this was based in New York was silly -- a two-story store and a front-door of Corrine's home with a large-ish front yard and tiny stoop are so not NYC. Maybe the authors were too constrained by story length to make it Providence RI, Buffalo NY, Harrisburg PA -- so they said New York to mean some generic big city with cold winters. I also hated the "one-year-later" scene. This seems like a prerequisite for these Hallmark Christmas movies. Haven't they ever heard of "and they lived happily ever after"?

A notch above the typical Hallmark holiday movie
mritchie-874-15678711 November 2017
Corrine is a musician who works in a music store; her boss Dave is an old friend of hers, and is sweet on her but would never show it because she has never seen him as boyfriend material. However, Christmas is coming up and she is fresh off a break-up with Tim, who keeps calling her hoping for a second chance. We know a bit about Corrine's background: her grandfather, overseas during WWII, sent her grandmother songs instead of traditional letters. The last one she got was on a Christmas Eve before he was reported killed, and when she died, she gave the song to Corrine as a keepsake, which she treasures. Her favorite ornament, also from her grandmother, is of a group of carolers, and one night, when some carolers come to her door, she notices that the front-and-center singer, Harold, is wearing the same snowflake scarf that one of the ornament carolers is wearing. Wouldn't you know that, a couple days later, Harold winds up as a seasonal worker at the music store. This is when the movie takes a "Wonderful Life" twist: Harold is actually an angel who has been assigned to get Corrine and Dave together. If he succeeds, he'll win his wings. But Harold has his hands full since Dave is a little gun-shy because of his own failed romances, and just as it looks like Corrine is starting to see Dave in a romantic light, that rat bastard Tim comes back in the picture. Can Harold get everything straight before midnight on Christmas Eve?

I give this Hallmark holiday movie a few extra points for its somewhat original plot. Yes, it's stolen from It's a Wonderful Life but it does have a couple of nice variations, and in its plot point involving an old song written by a dead loved one, even borrows a bit from the climax of The Bishop's Wife. The mostly Canadian cast, none of whom I remember seeing before, is fine. I like that Dave (Graham Abbey) is a little rougher-looking than the usual shiny bland romantic leads, and Sergio Di Zio, as the angel, gives an almost eccentric performance that ends up working well. I had some problems with plot loopholes that I can't discuss here, but I recommend this as something just a little different from the Hallmark Christmas Factory.

Wow! It truly touched me!
theoneheart31 December 2017
It was an exquisite Christmas romance movie. One of the most truly touching and moving Hallmark movies I've seen after bingeing for days. Prepare yourself for a few tears. The film grew to what seemed to be a powerful conclusion then offered more. My favorite of many Hallmark films I truly enjoyed. Highly recommended for anyone drawn to HEA Hallmark Christmas romances.

This is a Classic Christmas Movie that should be around a long time!
bhhartwig21 November 2020
Everything about this movie was great right from the beginning. The acting was incredible and made us forget this was actually a movie we were watching. It is definitely a "feel good" movie but in these difficult times it is exactly what all of us need. Congratulations to Hallmark for producing this. One final praise is the incredible song at the end "Twas the Night Before Christmas". We have played that repeatedly since first hearing it. That will also be around for a long time!

Wonderful movie
toncincin20 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I watch it 2-3 times every year. It's a beautiful story - and the man and woman don't fall in love five days after meeting. They've been friends for years and never looked past their friendship. An angel helps them find each other. It is just a feel good Christmas movie. Hallmark should do more like this one - instead of the romance causing love in a few days/weeks - where everyone changes their future plans...

Favorite Hallmark Christmas movie
mardigras-2923820 December 2020
This is by far my favorite Hallmark Christmas movie. It doesn't have any of the sappy scenes that pretty much every other Hallmark Christmas movie has: No christmas tree shopping, no making cookies, no ice skating, no meddling parents (other than a short phone call at the very beginning), no children. With the haunting/enchanting music, and the TOTALLY original storyline, it's the perfect non-Hallmark movie, which makes it that much better!

I think a lot of the criticism of Harold comes from how people view the movie differently. If you think of Dave and Corrine as the main (and perhaps only) story, then Harold could be seen as an annoyance. But if you think of Harold's story as the main story (as I did), then it gives you a whole different perspective, one in which Harold is viewed entirely differently.
