Despite being a lover of Christmas, that is not to say that every Hallmark Christmas film is great. A fair share of them are watchable enough but there are average and less ones about, still watch them out of curiosity and also because of them being part of a completest quest. Alicia Witt is a bit hit and miss for me, she's a regular in these films and while there are times where you can see why there are quite a number of other times where she really could have toned it down.

Something that is luckily not the case here. Witt comes off very well here, as do a number of other things. 'Christmas at Cartwright's' would not fit my definition of a great Christmas film or even a great film overall, and this is all personal opinion not an objective one. 'Christmas at Cartwright's' is though a very pleasant, inoffensive diversion and not a bad way to pass the time for a couple of hours of a bleak afternoon for instance.

As said, Witt is immensely charming and injects a lot of personality without forcing it out, nothing affected here about her performance. She does make a potentially strange character work, considering the concept that is. Wallace Shawn still has a loving twinkle in his eye and doesn't phone it in. Gabrielle Miller has fun in her role and doesn't overplay, which is great as she had a type of character where it was easy to do so. The characters are not complex in development but at least don't bore or irritate, while the central chemistry has spark and is quite sweet.

'Christmas at Cartwright's' looks good. The interiors for the store really stand out, very beautifully eye-catching and the photography doesn't cheapen that. The script doesn't come over as stilted, over-cheesy or over-saccharine and the story while far from flawless is charming, warm-hearted and emotionally investable without taking itself too seriously, enough of a lightness of touch to avoid heaviness.

However, the story does execute its concept a bit too ordinarily and brings nothing new to the table. This is standard Hallmark Christmas, with little to set it apart. So while it is pleasant to watch, the predictability gets excessive as do the silliness and coincidences (meaning that it was not always easy to take the final third completely seriously).

Another thing that felt excessive was the music, which should have been used much less, as it did get too much, and felt very over-scored and intrusive. Distracting from the atmosphere and from some of the dialogue which was sometimes swamped by it.

In conclusion, worth seeing but not a "two thumbs way up" sort of film. 6/10

Another fine Hallmark Christmas movie
utgard1410 November 2015
Enjoyable Hallmark movie starring Alicia Witt as an unemployed single mom who, through a series of events, gets a job as a department store Santa without anyone at the store actually knowing she's not a 'he.' Helping her along the way is angel (I think?) Wallace Shawn. Other characters include the adorable daughter struggling at school, the wealthy (but bland) love interest, and the villainous woman who causes problems for our heroine every five minutes. It's hardly a Miracle on 34th Street but it'll get the job done.

Alicia Witt is immensely likable and carries the movie on her shoulders. Wallace Shawn is fun whenever he's around. Gabrielle Miller makes for an easy-to-hate villainess. T.J. McGibbon plays the daughter and steals every scene she's in. Gabriel Hogan is the weakest part of the cast as the completely forgettable love interest. He's the usual Hallmark clichéd rich guy that every woman is apparently aspiring to marry. He's also unexciting in every possible way. I think Alicia's character can do better but I didn't write the movie. It's worth a look if you enjoy these sorts of things. It won't rock your world or anything but it's a good way to pass the time.

Quirky Charm
jromanbaker8 November 2022
Alicia Witt has a quirky charm, and she is excellent as the first Santa at a department store. I have to thank the wonderful film ' Bros ' for my addiction to Hallmark Films, and the goodwill that they deliver to many people. I am not sure this is one of my favourites, but it has a great premise. Women can be just as good as men portraying Santa, and Witt has the right approach in playing this role. As we all know these Christmas fantasies have a male lead as well, but sadly in this film I did not think the one chosen for this was not quite up to make the heartbeat, either for female as well as male viewers. But to return to Alicia Witt she is much less passive than some of the female actors in the Hallmark genre. I really believed she could bring magic to the children she meets, and her mentor played brilliantly by the muti-talented Wallace Shawn was a magical choice of its own. ' Real ' life should have more female Santas. Worth watching.

How Did She Get Paid???
archiecm8 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I really did enjoy this movie but I yelled at it for the first half of it. She needed rent money so she took this job (a man's job) wearing a Santa suit disguise. She doesn't know she's in the hands of an angel (Wallace Shawn) and thinks she's fooling him and the kids and the Department store staff. Fine. But how's she going to get paid? The check can't be made out to a woman for a man's position can it? Later, I realized her name is Nicki so I suppose she can get a check in her real name since that is a boys and girls name. (There's Nicholas and there's Nicole). If I'd remembered her name I wouldn't have needed to yell, "How did she get paid?" a dozen times. The point is she was good with kids and the angel thought she needed a break. So he helps her read the minds of the kids and she's a smash success. I enjoyed that part. Her lying to the male love interest was irritating. Lies get discovered. Also, why not just be who you are? If he has a problem with her being a good Santa and with her needing to pay the bills then he's the wrong guy for her. I had to stop the DVD when she failed the honesty test on their first date. Again I screamed. My dog hates screaming and bounds off the bed and scrambles underneath whenever he hears me yell and that seems to happen two or three times a night. Sorry Biscuit but she really really disappointed me. She got the guy back in the end but I'm not sure she deserved him. Guess that's it.

Okay Time Killer
Christmas-Reviewer31 October 2016
BEWARE OF FALSE REVIEWS & REVIEWERS. SOME REVIEWERS HAVE ONLY ONE REVIEW TO THEIR NAME. NOW WHEN ITS A POSITIVE REVIEW THAT TELLS ME THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH THE FILM. IF ITS A NEGATIVE REVIEW THEN THEY MIGHT HAVE A GRUDGE AGAINST THE FILM . NOW I HAVE REVIEWED OVER 200 HOLIDAY FILMS. I HAVE NO AGENDA. I AM HONEST!

"Christmas at Cartwright's" is a 2014 American-Canadian romance television film directed by Graeme Campbell and starring Alicia Witt, Gabriel Hogan and Wallace Shawn Written by Margaret Oberman, the film is about a single mom who gets a holiday job as a department store Santa to pay her rent.

Now I don't mind if a film goes into uncharted territory but this film doesn't. The filmmakers think the fact the idea that "Santa" is being played by a woman is "Shocking".

I think the filmmakers should of re-thought this project. I think the film should of focused on "Santa" giving advise to the men who work at the store. Complications happen when her ex-husband starts working at the store along side her new boyfriend. Disguised as "Santa" she sees both of these men in a new light. She learns why her ex-husband left her and why he is behind in child support. She sees that her current boyfriend isn't perfect but also see's that a female co-worker is out to steal her boyfriend. That would of made a more interesting film.

Fun, if predictable
VetteRanger2 December 2019
Alicia Witt does a lot of these Christmas movies, and she's one of my wife's favorites in them. There's a good reason. Her films are generally a cut above the average cliched Christmas plot. It's not necessarily that her plots are more original, but her slightly confused and sometimes disgruntled acting style gives her roles a lot of separation from the overly perky performances turned in by many other actresses who float through these films with plastic performances.

In this movie, Alicia is a down-on-her-luck single mom (of course!) who, with an assist and a push by an angel, gets the job as a department store Santa. Overlooking the fact that there is no way she could be mistaken for a male Santa, the movie moves along with a funny story concerning her employment coinciding with a predictable but satisfying story concerning a romance with store exec.

Nothing about this story is new or inventive, but it is a fun watch.

Santa's got a secret
studioAT9 December 2020
People are trying to apply logic to this film, but much like Father Christmas himself it's probably not best to.

Instead enjoy a better than average Hallmark film with regular player Alicia Witt in the lead role.

It's got a lot that's good about it, and although slow in some places, is an enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half.

wonderful movie, lovable cast
rireland-198-26539728 December 2014
This is a great film. I especially liked the actress playing Nicky. She seemed believable yet magical. Angel stories are always great and this one did not disappoint. The little girl was cute without being precocious. I liked how everyone at Cartwright' s loved Santa Nick, except the evil Fiona. It was fun to see Gabrielle Miller play a baddie after seeing her as the nice, but insecure Lacey on Corner Gas. Hallmark has the best films! I also applaud Patricia Heaton for producing this sweet movie. The store sets were really beautiful. The only thing that puzzled me was 2 stories that Bill told to Nicky. One concerned questioning his father about Santa and in the other he mentions being raised by a single mom...what happened to his dad? That was the only inconsistency I spotted. But otherwise I recommend this film.

Cute story, female lead, and daughter
MickyG33314 January 2023
7.3 stars.

The female lead is above average for me, she's not in my top 10, but she's in my top 20 for sure (there are so many leading ladies, so this is a good rating). The lead male I've seen a thousand times (not much of an exaggeration) in 'Heartland' as a regular, so he's very familiar. And I figured this movie is Canadian being he's in other Canadian productions.

The story is semi-original if you can believe it. It's a bit different, a woman Clause. And her name is Nicky, so no mystery there. Her daughter is endearing, she makes a third of what is magical about this film. The angel guy, well he's ok, but just because he looks funny and talks strangely doesn't mean they need to make him an angel that looks like an elf. It's a strange concept, and it's not cool in my opinion. Whatever, just my soap box.

The lead male is a great fit, the perfect good guy executive who loves the lead female because of her character and not her physical attributes. The way we know this is because he likes her also when she's disguised as Santa. The writers are showing us he has redeeming qualities, we can root for him as a gallant fellow.

The antagonist is her boss, who doesn't know she's her boss. It's complicated, you'll see.

50% of what is special about this movie is the leads, 33% because of the daughter, and the other 17% was entertainment value. I feel they had enough time to grow an enjoyable on-screen romance.

What Went Wrong?
rich-49427 July 2018
Alicia Witt is one of my favorite Hallmark actresses. Add in Wallace Shawn, and I was ready for a delightful ride. Unfortunately, this movie never got out of the garage. Usually engaging, Alicia Witt seemed to struggle with this part. Wallace Shawn did not have his heart in his performance. Maybe it was the writing. Or maybe this was just not a good vehicle for Alicia Witt. I do not know that I will ever figure out what ruined this movie for me. The basic idea is ingenious and could have been a source of a lot of lighthearted fun. Instead, everything seemed forced and two-dimensional.

Miss Noel (tv)
leplatypus25 December 2015
I didn't planned it but it's great to write this review on Christmas day!

So far i failed all my Christmas time : All along December month, i would like to decorate my home, have a advent calendar, share sweets with my friends, write greetings cards, read moving stories about this holiday and watch the best movies about it near a warm fire and sipping infusion! At the end, i usually have fun just for Christmas day. This year it's a bit the same … until checking TV programs and noticing that there are a lot of Christmas TV movies.. When i see this one had Alicia, i was just really motivated to see it ! Alicia is among the rare artist I knew as a kid (see Dune, Twin Peaks) and now she is a lovely, fun, caring young woman who plays with the best (Pacino, Bullock). In a way, you can feel that it's movie for TV as the action happens in sets : there's not a lot of outdoor sequence in lovely Chicago so we have a Christmas movie nearly without snow.. But except this, this a wonderful, family movie : Alicia is really good being a single mother and showing courage and efforts to support her family ! She is kind, polite, generous, wonderfully dressed and always smiling even if things turn bad. Sure the story can be guessed since the start but that's what I want : Christmas magic, romance, happiness and not more politics, violence, money, guns, nudity, hysteric, crazy people… Her daughter is totally sweet and as i have always like malls, this movie was really a great gift for me !

A charming holiday comedy.
doctorsmoothlove26 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Christmas at Cartwright's" is an older film from Hallmark staring Alicia Witt as a single mother who ends up working as a department store as its Santa. Witt is good as she always is. She brings a lot of enthusiasm and charm to what would otherwise be a forgettable film. For a woman around 40 when this was filmed, she seems and looks like a younger actor. This works in the context of this movie in which her daughter is a sassy elementary student.

Gabriel Hogan plays the romantic lead who also works at the department store. He's just average, but I do like his physicality. He makes her seem very small and her attraction to him seems natural. Another woman at Cartwright's (Gabrielle Miller) happens to also like him. Miller plays a great movie jerk. She is overly bossy and other words uncouth to write.

Witt is an unusually good Santa. She has some otherworldly help from a guardian angel played by Wallace Shawn. This bit is directly ripped out of It's a Wonderful Life and that's alright. Shawn is a good angel, dispensing the correct advice to Witt so that the children she meets are entranced with her. She becomes a very popular Santa much like Kevin Sorbo in Hallmark's "Santa Suit" which was also released around this time. Eventually he leaves and the ruse is up.

Witt's daughter is one of those movie kids who is much more mature than any kid would be. This didn't bother me as I thought of her as just a younger roommate. I do like the idea of a kid recognizing that someone could be happier in a relationship and wanting that for her mother.

Another notable point is the script's focus on the single motherhood of Witt's character. A lot of these films take place in a world where no one was ever divorced or had a child out of wedlock despite millions of people who do. She does an admirable job trying to help her daughter do well in English class, work and try to date. None of these sub plots feel as if they were added for padding. The film as a whole is a pleasant experience I would have again next holiday season.

A decent but unremarkable Hallmark movie
hallmarkchristmasguy15 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Christmas at Cartwrights (which is sometimes sold on Hallmark DVD collections under the name of Santa's Secret for some reason), is a decent but ultimately forgettable and unremarkable hallmark Christmas movie

If you're a fan of the genre, the movie plays out as expected with nothing that stands out. The writing is fine, the acting is fine, the pacing is fine, the music and scenery are fine. It's all so cookie cutter that this movie is easy to consume and easy to enjoy if you like Hallmark style holiday movies

The main character, Nicki, played by made for TV Christmas regular Alicia Witt, is a down on her luck unemployed single mom who stumbles her way into being a department store Santa thanks to a guardian angel played by Wallace Shawn

Nicki has a daughter who is trying to read and surprise her mom by reading the Night Before Christmas as a present. I actually found this to be one of the better and more endearing side plots I've seen recently in these types of movies.

The main love interest is the manager of the men's department at the department store. Of course the tension becomes when Nicki has to lie to her male lead about not being Santa and he inevitably finds out.

Alicia Witt isn't my favorite of the Hallmark regulars but she plays her role adequately - though her fake Santa voice was so obviously fake that someone should have picked up on it.

The only thing that bothered me about this movie was the sheer number of very obvious plot holes. All of these movies require some level of suspension of disbelief but this one is over the top. Nicki is shown eating lunch in a packed cafeteria in her Santa outfit, which should make it obvious she's a woman (one would have to pull the beard down to eat). Apparently she is getting paid (she is shown catching up on rent) but that shouldn't be possible without someone finding out she's a woman.

If you enjoy the genre you will probably find this one to be worth your 84 minutes but there's really nothing memorable here.

Watchable
Dog-River30 April 2021
It was a little too cheesy for me. I usually don't mind a bit of cheesiness in Christmas movies, but this one was overly cheesy. I also think I would have enjoyed the movie better, if they had gotten a different leading actress. Her many facial expressions were too over the top for me. The movie is still watchable though, just not one that I'd watch again.

Another Christmas Winner!
jwayne_2412 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Once again, Alicia Witt makes a great Hallmark Christmas film, this time playing Nicky, a single mom who loses her job right before Christmas. By a stroke of magic, she becomes the Santa at Cartwright's department store, thanks to Harry, the Christmas consultant, who may or may not be who he seems.

Nicky also begins to fall for Bill, head of the men's department, but he doesn't know she is Santa. He asks her out, but she gets nervous and leaves halfway through. Eventually, through the scheming of Fiona, special events head who likes Bill, Nicky is exposed and fired.

Thanks to a little bit of faith, "Christmas magic", and forgiveness, Nicky gets an even better job at Cartwright's and a second chance with Bill. What's more, her daughter, through a lot of practice, has improved her reading and reads the Night Before Christmas to Bill and Nicky to end the movie.

Thoroughly enjoyable and a movie to definitely re-watch this season!

Heartwarming
Jackbv12318 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There were so many heartwarming moments. There was much laughter.

This movie was at least as much if not more about Nicky and her daughter Becky, and about her as Santa, as it was a romance. As for the romance, the formula device chosen was what I call the hanging lie. Nicky is a woman acting as Santa. She keeps this from her potential boyfriend who also happens to be an executive in the store where she plays Santa.

I agree with another review that a woman playing Santa is not at all shocking. From the point where she becomes Santa, I kept thinking that the store can't possibly fire her because of the publicity they would get for refusing to allow a woman the equal rights of being a Santa, especially after she demonstrated she could do it and do it well. I believe that the movie actually underplayed this angle, because in the real world the publicity would have been national and she would have been besieged with reporters, especially the national morning shows. But the way they played it was more entertaining.

T.J. McGibbon as Becky was a darling and helped make this even more heartwarming, but she played a 30 year old in an 8 year old body - she was just too smart. But still, she was probably the real star of this show.

Alicia Witt was charming in this role, but I don't believe she got to play to her strengths. For one thing, the Santa outfit hid her face which can be so expressive.

Gabriel Hogan played well opposite Witt. What little time they had together on screen, there seemed to be chemistry. However, after the lie was revealed, Hogan became uncertain. It's true that Bill was angry, but Hogan seemed to have trouble figuring out how to gradually forgive Nicky - something was off.

Wallace Shawn was typical Wallace Shawn as the angel, meaning he was great. If the name doesn't ring a bell, look at his page. I'm sure you've seen him.

As in Hallmark movies, especially Christmas ones, this movie is way over the top in terms of everything working out. It seemed like too much, too fast. But that just means it's a Hallmark Christmas movie. You can count on them not to have sad endings.

Delightful Holiday Film
mrmac-4256118 November 2019
The presence of Alicia Witt and Wallace Shawn lift this film above the ordinary. Alicia is such a delight to watch in the role of a single mother without a job who is trying to remain positive and trying to give her daughter a happy Christmas experience. I wanted to give her a big hug and tell her that everything would work out well!

Cheery Santa movie!
lucylouise-2354613 November 2023
I LOVE this movie! Nicky is running out of money, and is about to lose her home, and she sets out to find a job. Thanks to an angel that she never sees, she gets a job as a department store Santa at Cartwright's Department Store. Hilarity ensues. She is a magical Santa, and is very popular, and it is all made magical by the angel. There is a mean boss at the store, though. This movie has a very happy ending. I look forward to watching this movie every year. I hope that Hallmark or GAC Family air "Christmas at Cartwright's" this year, too.

I definitely highly recommend this movie! Best Santa movie ever!

Cute
rebekahrox29 November 2021
This was a very cute movie starring the talented Alicia Witt playing a down on her luck single mom who is "magicked" into being the store Santa Claus by an angel disguised as a visiting corporate bigwig. Nicki is perfect for the role even though no one knows she is a woman in her Santa suit and stuffing. The kids and parents love her because she seems to be able to know exactly what they need for Christmas as well as being just a warm nurturing person. Store sales boom. She attracts the attention of a department manager who thinks she is just a regular store employee. They are attracted to each other right away, but Nicki is reluctant to tell him she is his Store Santa Claus. The lie becomes a source of tension and suspense.

Wallace Shawn is wonderful as the Angel who guides Nicki and thwarts Fiona, who plays the jealous villainess, at every turn. Gabrielle Miller is funny as always playing officious humorless snob. She suspects something is strange about the new store Santa and isn't too fond of Nicki either. She is determined to get her fired and away from the guy she has been flirting with and starts investigating the too good to be true Santa. We never really fear for Nicki, because, after all, God is on her side. So we just sit back and enjoy Fiona's machinations knowing her comeuppance is on the way. \ The only fly in the ointment is Gabriel Hogan who plays the love interest. I found him bland and uninteresting without a noticeable spark with the inimitable Ms Witt.
