Some of the acting was really good

Warning: Spoilers
If it wasn't for some of the inconsistencies it would be mistaken for real. Some of the acting is unconvincing but some is really good. Like the fisherman and the shark biologist.

Fake AND Boring
yvkckhcs2 April 2023
Some family showed this to me, convinced it was real. The acting was bad, the CG was bad, and it was boring and kept repeating the same information. With my limited knowledge of shark facts, I knew the claims about the shark were impossible. They try to explain this away with gems like "Sure it's impossible for a great white to stand still in the water, but this one learned how to breathe without moving I guess! It's a mystery!" I was squirming in my seat just waiting for it to be over. It's poorly presented and gives sharks a bad name. If you're going to make a mock-umentary, at least make it entertaining.

Utter tosh

Completely fabricated, hidden behind a tenuous disclaimer. The word documentary should be nowhere near this.

Great Entertainment

Warning: Spoilers
So this is the very first thing on my TV that is a lie? Ah no...I don't even trust the news anymore. And it is based on something remotely true? Really? I doubt it, but who cares, neither is most of the news. So what if this whole tale is all a bunch of hooey - cry me a river...what program isn't? Don't listen to that negativity out there...catch the good, and positive feel-vibes. With all the bad that is said, "Submarine" turns out to be a fun nautical frolic, picking up the limbs and body parts, 'Sharknado' (1 only) dropped along its way to obscurity. Two jaw-snapping words come to mind, whimsical and captivating (as long as you pre-record the show and fast-forward through the tedious post-commercial recaps). I recommend this to those who are easily bored with stories based on 'real events' and devour fake stories about man-eating Sharks. It is not for everyone, most stuff I like is not.

The Blair Witch Project of shark 'documentaries'
metal_drummer3 August 2023
First of all, if you're watching this simply for entertainment and nothing else then it will probably be fine for you. But please, if you're watching this because you want to learn about sharks and their behaviors and hunting methods please watch one of the many wonderful documentaries the both Discovery Channel and NatGeo wild have. There are even many shows about this specific place in South Africa and the unique white shark behaviors there. This movie is full of shark misinformation and exaggeration. It is beyond me why Animal Planet would show this on their channel. Most of the time Animal Planet does much better.

More fictitious than a successful African nation without a white government.

Warning: Spoilers
Should have been titled "Jaws 5" a fictitious documentary style drama about an oversized great white named "Submarine" with a taste for human flesh. First 15 minutes is believable the first time you watch it, resplendent with experts, marine biologists, even an old fisherman. The first shark attack is believable, Aside from that they may as well have used the rubber shark from Jaws 3-4.

The best example of a Mock-umentary
fzwdmxxyh1 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The CG shark is obviously fake, the claims made about the shark are just plain ridiculous. 'Submarine' was the name of a large great white (that was never proven to exist) in the late 70's, as it would have been full grown at this time, the likelihood of it still being alive when this film takes place is just plain ludicrous, but that pretty much matches up with all the other dis-information in the film. If it hadn't been part of shark week, I probably would have given it 3/10, but I think the general outrage directed to this film is because people were expecting something factual. I have one friend who is convinced it's all real - purely because it was part of shark week.

Would've been better as a "found footage" horror film
joelman2 April 2023
This is not a real documentary. Rather, it is a fictitious story masquerading as a documentary. Think Waiting for Guffman or This is Spinal Tap or Incident at Loch Ness. Pretty much every ostensible person in the film is a character played by a mediocre actor. One of the scientist characters has the unsubtle name of "Conrad Manus." The disclaimer at the beginning is weak and poorly worded.

I would've preferred a "found footage" style horror film. Something like Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity or The Fourth Kind. Hell, even something cool and atmospheric like The Mothman Prophecies, which is more straightforward narrative pretending to be based on true events. That would've been more fun. Instead, it's just a bad-CGI Jaws ripoff.

I was shown this episode of Shark Week by some folks who wholeheartedly believed it was real. I hope I didn't ruin it for them.

I mean, C'mon. If it were real, the people who showed it to me (along with an audience of children) would have had to reckon with the idea that they were showing the violent deaths of actual human beings to all of us. A shark-attack snuff film, if you will.

The only reason I give it more than one star is because the production design is halfway decent.
