Decent mind bender
stephenw-3018010 October 2017
Sleepwalker certainly makes an attempt to be a mind bending thriller, and does so with mixed results. The viewer might have to watch the film twice to get the gist of its meaning. I did!

A woman is found sleepwalking in the middle of the night and has no idea where she is. The police find her and return her to her dorm. She has a history of sleep walking and is concerned it is starting again. After another nights restlessness, she decides to go to the College sleep study program to be monitored.

After the first time she does this things start to become strange. Things around her start to change subtly. The Dr. In charge takes a personal interest in her case and attempts to help her as things progressively get stranger and stranger as the studies continue.

The rest of the film is an exercise in uncertainty, nightmares, and amnesia. The film, I thought, was somewhat thought provoking but misses the mark as a real mind bending thriller. It is more a film about a woman with a sleep disorder which turns into a mix of confusion, hallucinations And scattered reality.

I would say it worth a viewing but don't expect much in way of a strong thriller....

Is it me?
Sleepin_Dragon14 November 2018
I watched this, and for the most part enjoyed it, but what on Earth was it about, what was going on? I concentrated from start to finish, but simply could not follow it, I am all for complexity in films, ambiguity, but this just made absolutely no sense, events were happening just for the sake of it.

The ending sucked, totally lazy writing, to an unforgivable extent, very definitely a case of 'did they think they could get away with that in this day and age?'

The acting was excellent, very impressive performances, and the visuals were truly excellent.

I did like it, even if I didn't quite follow it. Mehh, 5/10

Contrived
jmbovan-47-16017323 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Is it sleepwalking, night terrors, psychosis, or something else? Who cares. Contrived plot and story telling lead this movie nowhere. Trying, oh so trying to be profound but in a way without saying it or showing it. Instead it just depicts sadness and obsession. Ho hum. Doesn't even do that very well. And the twist ending isn't much if a twist. But end it does. Thank goodness it did end.

See through nighty...
MagicMurderFan29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Can't roll my eyes hard enough. So without going through the whole confusing story, which I'm still not sure about. Nice looking girl, sleeping disorder, or crazy? Stalked? Digging the costume choices, aside, from the night wear. It's like they said, "sweetie, you're not that great of an actress, so here wear this see though night gown, so we can see your bits." Who wears that, when they have a sleepwalking disorder?? Someone trying to be mistaken for a prostitute?? The idea was good, but it's just confusing. And I'm gonna be honest here, no one is scared of Haley Joel Osment, he's like a hobbit, asthma. 3 stars for the daytime fashion choices.

Very Strange!
brightspark-7823913 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A very strange movie about the perception of reality - am I dreaming or is what I perceive to be a dream actually reality? This is the question posed by Sleepwalker and, as far as I am concerned anyway, remains unanswered to the very end.

Acting is excellent, pace is good, intrigue builds, but, in the end, I was left thinking... what the heck just happened! I am certainly not dumb, but maybe someone far more insightful than I could explain what this movie is all about, because, frankly, I have no idea.

Sleepwalker left me with mixed feelings; while I quite enjoyed the viewing experience, waiting patiently for the shocking revelation to arrive, when the movie ended and I was left none the wiser, my final thought was... what a massive waste of time!

One for the hyper-imaginative perhaps? Definitely not for those who prefer their story lines all neatly wrapped up in a bow.

Mystery solved
lufacebook6 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
As I watched this I did start doubting whether the events described by the protagonist was real or a strange psychotic episode. It had me going for a while although I think the story did stall slightly halfway as I wanted to get to the crux of why. Ultimately any confusion or doubt about what was happening was instantly answered in the last 5 minutes, which did make me feel deflated at the end as the impact of the movie could have been better if some of the mystery was left unsolved. Ultimately, poor Sarah did remember the actual events of killing her married lover along with herself and the initial back story given to us was false. Fortunately or unfortunately for her she survived the apparent suicide and is now in a coma trapped in her own mind, which boils down to the entire movie based on her mind's machinations of dealing with what happened during her comatose state.

The clues were there though, the water leak theme everytime she locked herself in a room (mapped to real world happenings as water drips from the ceiling onto her toe during her coma), the coma hospital guy no doubt a complete sleaze bag as she lies there helpless manifests in her coma dreams as the guy suffocating her, and of course the sleep doctor who cares for her is the lover calling it off before his untimely death by her hand. Very neat little bow to tie everything up, nowhere near as good as Memento or other movies of its ilk but not a terrible movie either I've seen much worse. All in all decent enough to watch on Netflix with a cup of tea in hand, even with the average acting.

Am I too dumb to understand this or too smart or enjoy it?
cherriburner1 November 2021
I am a horror novelist, so I am undoubtably a fan of cryptic symbolism and leaving things up to the viewers imagination. However, this film had me wondering if I was too dumb to understand it, or too smart to enjoy it. I don't know if I understood it. Maybe I am simply too stupid to grasp the artistic vision. Or maybe it was just a really bad movie.

I imagine the writers were fighting over what ending they wanted to pick. They give what seems to be the conclusion 4 times before the story finds away to pick back up. Unfortunately, the actual conclusion is an elementary writing cliche. I have no idea how they managed to get away with that ending in this day in age. I had to google the Wikipedia article to make sure I had understood it correctly. I am still not sure if I do. The audience is left with so many loose ends and questions. It seems most scenes happened just for the sake of happening. Half of the movie has no real plot relevance Also, it was really, really unnecessary for the directors to have the main character in lingerie for half of the movie. Who sleeps in that??? It's hard to focus on whatever message they're trying to convey when the main actor is dripping wet in nothing but a white, lace underwear set.

Acting was amazing. I think the choking scenes were beautifully filmed. Great consume design. Tons of symbolism that is easily missed if you glance away from the screen for a second too long. The transitions and cinematography were great. It has looks of a billion-dollar-budget movie with the quirk of an indie film. I wish it had better writers. Maybe if they had stuck with the original conclusion, or tied up more loose ends, it would have been a 10/10. It had the makings of a cult classic. It failed miserably in the ending.

Sarah? You Have Unusual Sleep Patterns!

+1 Star For Keeping me confused as to what was going on thru the first half...

+1 Star For Some Exterior Scenes Being filmed Outside my Childhood Church

-1 Star For The Ending . Was Not Impressed By the Ending at all.

Okay this movie had a lot of build up that was well done and satisfying up to the point about 20 minutes til the end where the movie needs an adequate payoff or it really doesn't fit the bill.

In my opinion it didn't fit the bill. Does that make it a horrible movie? No of course not, but it also doesn't make it great. LOL Compare to Memento??? Please. Not even in the same horse race.

This movie was not what I thought it would be.
chelsa-2912925 March 2022
This movie was insanely confusing, I watched it with a few people and none of us could figure out what was going on through the whole thing. Very confusing time jumps and just random outbursts of different scenes that had nothing to do with the ones before. I do not recommend.

Thriller with an unreliable narrator. Perfectly satisfying ending imo
meganrenny12 January 2018
The protagonist of the film is a young woman named Sara Foster who has trouble with sleepwalking after the suicide of her husband. After one walk takes her miles from her house she decides to go to a sleep clinic for a study, and finds that from then on, every time she falls asleep and wakes up, theres a little something different about the world.

Through out the movie, its obvious that Sara is suffering from more than just sleepwalking. Many scenes focus on the idea that she is also experiencing hallucinations, potential weight loss, and memory loss. A lot of things contradict each other and even her own memories change. It is at this point we realize that Sara is an unreliable narrator through this story and have to look for little truths in what might be reality.

A lot of people seemed confused about the ending of this movie; felt it wasn't clear, but after watching movies like Memento, Coherence, Primer, and Mine Games, I didn't feel so. I think the point of these movies is to be a little curious about what is reality and to question the things presented to you and from who they're presented by. In the end you can certainly choose what you want to believe, but I think Sleepwalker makes it clear in the end what is really going on!

Overall, definitely give it a try!

Ok, but how to explain the rest
Golightly67816 October 2021
Curious writing. Certainly confusing. Purposefully. Ending was acceptable but left many questions. Felt like there were a few changes to script along the way, less intentional. Enjoyed cast. Lead actress is wonderful. I enjoyed it for general idea of the subject matter, which i always make a point to watch. ; sleep related thrillers.

Bizarre
chloe_harwood30 April 2020
Acting was great, considering the script and story was absolute bobbins. I didn't get it at all, I followed it all the way through but didn't get the point of the story. None of it made sense.

Keep walking, I sleep
ThatDoesntMatter26 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the idea of the premise. I always wondered what if I woke up after napping on a bench somewhere, and no-one knew me anymore... A trope that has been played with here and there.

Sadly, the script was bad, the plot just tangled versions of Groundhog Day, the lead actress a one-expression bore, the story had her act (haha) overly hysterical, nothing was realistic.

I quickly lost interest, and part of the reason was that nightgown *rolleyes*.

The cinematography was artsy, lots of linear archtecture to juxtapose the chaotic storyline. That's my one star.

I did not like the fashion, the actress, the acting, the backstory.

The tada-reveal was horrible on top of horrible, and predictable.

This movie is worse than the reviews make it seem
musicchic471326 October 2021
If you don't watch a lot of movies, you might find this one to be entertaining. If you have watched a lot, then you'll notice how unimaginative this movie truly was. I don't have particularly high standards for all movies. But if you're going to be a slow burn, at least have a good ending. The ending was a letdown. Truly a waste of time.

The makings of a cult classic, but a failed ending
siderite14 October 2017
The acting was OK and the directing was good. The mood of the film was exactly what I think it should have been and the tension keeps increasing as the movie goes, so it was captivating. All in waiting for the end that will explain it all. Alas, it kind of went the way of Phantasm, where you don't know where reality begins and fantasy ends, thus invalidating most of the qualities of the production.

I liked the main character. A gorgeous redhead who doesn't act all passionate and crazy, but coolly tries to figure out a situation that would have made most people crack. The other characters were kind of secondary, but they did their job in a story that is about what's going on in the lead's head. Perhaps I wasn't in the mood for mind bending movies, but I also generally hate films that end with "oh, it was all in their head" or "they were all dead" (yes, not a fan of Jacob's Ladder), so I didn't enjoy the ending at all.

Bottom line: with so many good things in this film - including Izabella Scorupco who is still hot as hell and Ahna O'Reilly moving around in white underwear - I really wanted to like and understand the film and I just couldn't. Too bad.

Another poster nailed it. The last screens explained it all quite tidily. Only thing I don't understand... the folks that didn't understand lol Excellent film and I'm glad I watched it.

Very Good Twisty Mindbending Thriller That Actually Ties Up The Ending
ukproject10 January 2023
I have to go against the grain here and say that I absolutely loved 'Sleepwalker' although it did take me a second viewing to spot the main reveal explaining exactly what was happening.

The explanation is there clear as day and it does tie in to the rest of the story really well, but the film deliberately brings the viewer into a state of as much confusion as the main character so it is very easily overlooked.

As a huge fan of Christopher Nolans Memento, there are vague similarities at a stretch with the main similarity between the two being the level of confusion. Otherwise there isn't really a great deal in common between the two.

If you're a Memento fan, but have watched it so many times that it no longer holds that level of mystery or confusion anymore then Sleepwalker is a good candidate to confuse the hell out of you.

Thankfully, Sleepwalker ties the end up pretty well.

Well worth a watch if you're into Mindbenders.

I honestly couldn't grasp it
burgerman937 August 2023
For the most part this was a solid thriller. I rank the acting at an 8, and the script at a 4. It was a very mystifying story that I failed to understand, but I still was entertained. The pacing and cinematography were on point.

I recommend this film to a degree, although I think it takes a special analysis to fully unpack some of the themes. I imagine re-examining some the dialogue about identity would help me sort out the confusion.

Just take it for what it is- you'll be on a 90 minute mind-bending roller coaster ride. Try not to think too hard about the film's meaning and you will have a pleasant experience.

Excellent Movie. A Psychological Marvel!
AntBar19685 July 2020
I know exactly what this creative movie is about and everything that happened in the movie is explained by what happens near the end of the movie. Take Sarah Foster at her word when she says who she is near the end. The end explains everything. This movie is simply brilliant.
