Berkeley, CA, 1955: Its 4:15 PM, and fourteen-year-old Stephanie Bryan hasnt arrived home from school. Stephanie is never late, and as the minutes then hours pass there is no sign of her. Stephanie has disappeared without a trace. Eyewitnesses along Stephanies usual route home from school report a man in a dark-colored car beating a young woman, but no one can say exactly what was happening or in what direction the car was headed. Finally a ransom call comes in to the Bryans, but at the drop, police discover it is a hoax. These jokers were just hoping to cash in on the mystery. Two months go by without a single development in the case detectives are stumped. Then, a miraculous break: a woman from nearby Alameda finds a clue to the case in her very own basement. But how did it get there? Police will have to use every tool at their disposal, and get a little help from an intrepid newspaper reporter and a pack of bloodhounds, to uncover what exactly happened to little Stephanie Bryan.
