Awesomeness co-founder Brian Robbins to run division aimed at young audiences.
Paramount Pictures chief Jim Gianopulos has hired Brian Robbins to run Paramount Players, a division that will produce filmed content aimed at younger viewers in conjunction with the Viacom flagship brands.
The move follows comments by Viacom chief Bob Bakish earlier this year that Paramount needed to adopt a content strategy that aligned more closely with other brands in the Viacom stable such as Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Bet.
Awesomeness co-founder Robbins and his team at Paramount Players will develop projects with the flagship brands and Paramount Pictures will market and distribute the co-branded films with an emphasis on digital and social media campaigns.
Robbins, who announced in February he was leaving AwesomenessTV after Comcast acquired parent company DreamWorks Animation, will serve as president of Paramount Players and will report to Gianopulos when he joins the company later this month.

With the September 23, 2017 debut of Dirty 30 and the September 26 premiere of Laid in America, Hollywood has presented us with two studio-backed low-budget films featuring many prominent social-media influencers. Traditional Hollywood has finally joined, to borrow influencer Michelle Glavan’s phrase, “the YouTube movie circuit.”
That means traditional studios are finally trying a newish model for making and marketing films that are the polar opposite of their usual blockbuster behemoths. The model emerged about three years ago, when indie producers and multichannel networks like AwesomenessTV tapped squadrons of influencers for roles in films such as Expelled and Camp Takota. This model has resulted in small films that typically are profitable, relatively low risk, and can connect with young audiences who otherwise ignore traditional studios.
Previously, the big media companies focused more on buying up multichannel networks (e.g. Maker Studios, Machinima, Collective Digital Studios) and tapping influencers to promote their products.

Some people fancy themselves a two-hour movie on the largest screen possible, whereas others prefer six-second clips on the smallest screen possible. The incredibly stark size and length differences don’t correlate with the popularity of each, however, as Vine has skyrocketed to 200 million active users as of last December. The personalities on Vine are arguably as big as those of movie stars, seeing such fame that many of them have launched acting or musical careers.
Vine star Cameron Dallas, currently at 9.4 million followers, has tried delving into both, having starred in the AwesomenessTV movie “Expelled” and the Fullscreen film “The Outfield.” He’ll next be jumping into the world of Netflix, as the streaming service has ordered an unscripted series following his exploits.

Talent agency Wme is adding to its roster of digital stars, signing musician Jon Cozart, budding actress Andrea Russett, and quirky family vlog squad the Eh Bee Family.
Cozart, who recently dropped a scathing musical account of the YouTube landscape in 2016, blends pop culture and current affairs as a so-called “info-tainer,” according to Wme. His Paint channel counts 3.4 million subscribers and 267 million views.
Russett, who starred opposite Cameron Dallas in 2014’s Expelled (which was the second most-downloaded movie on iTunes that year), also appears in this summer’s Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, starring Zac Efron and Adam DeVine. In addition to partnering with top brands on her channel like Netflix, At&T, Pizza Hut, and Coca Cola, Russett is also an avid supporter of The Thirst Project, which aims to provide communities around the world with safe drinking water.

Fullscreen has bolstered its roster through a significant creative coup. The digital media company that functions as both a multi-channel network (McN) and a production studio has signed five digital media personalities: Kingsley, Teala Dunn, TipsyBartender, Catrific, and Jay Alvarrez.
The five new additions to Fullscreen’s network all have their own dedicated followings; across their respective YouTube channels, they count 8.2 million subscribers. They also cover a broad range of video categories, ranging from food and drink to travel to vlogging.

Dunn, who was previously partnered with AwesomenessTV, is an 18-year-old social media star who appeals to a kindred teenage audience. She has recently showed up in some substantial projects, such...

In July, Supergravity Films brought The Chosen, a horror-thriller feature film led by social media star Kian Lawley, to Vimeo On Demand. A little more than a month later, the movie came to iTunes, which it ultimately rose to the top of the horror charts. Now, The Chosen is moving on to its next distribution platform: It has arrived on Netflix.
The Chosen’s availability on Netflix was secured thanks to a deal between Supergravity and the streaming video platform. The horror flick joins several other films led by YouTube stars that can also be viewed on Netflix. Camp Takota, starring Mamrie Hart, Hannah Hart, and Grace Helbig, is on there, as is Cameron Dallas vehicle Expelled.
Both Camp Takota and Expelled delivered strong sales through on-demand platforms before arriving on Netflix, and The Chosen is no different. Its rise to the top of the iTunes horror charts demonstrates the appeal of its young star.

The annual Teen Choice Awards aired on Fox on August 16th, and a number of “Choice Web Stars” went home with their own surfboard trophies. The big winners were Bethany Mota, who won Choice Web Star: Female for the second year in a row, and Cameron Dallas, who won Choice Web Star: Male.
Dallas, whose 8.2 million followers are good for 11th-best on Vine, also won the award for Choice Viner. His wins come eight months after he rode his teen heartthrob status to the box office with Expelled, a film that sold well on video on demand platforms.
The Teen Choice Awards also give out a “Choice YouTuber” award, which this year went to Kian Lawley. Additional categories highlight specific web genres like music, comedy, and fashion/beauty; the 2015 victors in those areas were Shawn Mendes, Colleen Ballinger, and Zoe Sugg, respectively. Stream Market: The president of Awesomeness TV identified a section of the Millennial demographic as woefully underserved during a panel at the two-day digital conference on Thursday.
Speaking during a session dedicated to the making of his company’s 2014 social smash Expelled, Brett Bouttier explained how the film’s success was not entirely unexpected.
“There are very few films being made for teens,” said Bouttier, adding: “Digital has created a new TV for them.
“We knew there was that opening in the marketplace and we knew the stars had the ability to be the marketers and not just the stars.”
Expelled opened at number one on iTunes in December and stayed there for four weeks to keep the likes of rival new releases such as Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Equalizer at bay. The film drew approximately 15bn social impressions during active release.

Day continued: “We’re definitely feeling our audience is underserved theatrically and wants to go and see movies. At some point we probably will go down that path; we’re just thinking about the best and right ways to get there. Right now we love tapping into the fanbase around the talent.”

YouTube’s plan to assist its stars isn’t limited to original web programming. In addition to the four new series it announced, a recent blog post from YouTube also revealed the site’s partnership with AwesomenessTV, alongside which it will create feature films starring YouTube content creators.
Over the next two years, YouTube and AwesomenessTV will release “several” feature films that will premiere on YouTube before they arrive anywhere else. AwesomenessTV CEO Brian Robbins, who founded the teen-focused multi-channel network, will develop and produce the film projects.
The upcoming films will add to AwesomenessTV’s growing roster of feature films. The network has produced several star vehicles for digital content creators, including Expelled, which featured Vine star Cameron Dallas, and Smosh: The Movie, which is led by its titular duo. Expelled, which premiered in December 2014, became a top seller on iTunes; Smosh: The Movie will look to generate strong...

Back in March, Verizon inked a deal with AwesomenessTV which would bring over 200 hours of original programming to a new over-the-top channel for Verizon’s consumer base. At the time, no titles or content plans were announced. Now, at Cannes’ Mip Digital Fronts, AwesomenessTV has revealed its first series for Verizon’s upcoming platform, as well as divulged information on expanding internationally and developing new content.
The first piece of programming Awesomeness will develop for Verizon is a series called Guidance. Already in production, Guidance stars Michelle Trachtenberg from the TV show Gossip Girl. AwesomenessTV’s President Brett Bouttier told the Digital Fronts audience, as reported by The Video Ink, that Verizon will have the exclusive first showing of Guidance before the series is available to global markets.
AwesomenessTV is also working on an expansion into other countries, a goal already mentioned back in December 2014. The YouTube multi-channel network announced...

A pair of popular YouTubers are set to make their feature film debut. Lauren Elizabeth (aka LoveLaurenElizabeth) and Jenn McAllister (aka JennXPenn) are set to star in Bad Night, a film produced by Grb Entertainment.
Bad Night, which was announced at Playlist Live, will be the first film from Grb, which is best known for producing reality TV shows like A&E's Intervention. The project will star McAllister and Elizabeth as a pair of high school students who get lost during a class field trip. That plot summary, with its school-based shenanigans, resembles Cameron Dallas vehicle Expelled, another film led by an online video star.
The similarities between Bad Night and Expelled run a lot deeper than their respective plots. Expelled brought partners from the AwesomenessTV multi-channel network to the big screen, and both Elizabeth and McAllister are represented by Big Frame, the talent management company owned by AwesomenessTV. Two of Big Frame's employees,...

AwesomenessTV will soon boast a title in Netflix’s streaming library. The YouTube multi-channel network’s comedy film Expelled, starring Viner Cameron Dallas, will debut on the streaming video-on-demand service on February 1, 2015.
In Expelled, Dallas (who boasts 6.8 million followers on Vine alone) stars as trouble-maker Felix, who gets kicked out of high school after pranking one too many times. Felix turns to his brother (fellow Vine star Marcus Johns), best friend (up-and-coming Instagram and Twitter personality Matt Shively), new friend (YouTuber and fellow AwesomenessTV talent Lia Maria Johnson), and classmate (Vine celebrity Andrea Russett) for help in convincing his parents he’s not only still in school, but also doing a great job at that.
Alex Goyette penned, produced, and directed Expelled, with Shauna Phelan (The Smosh Movie, Terry the Tomboy) and AwesomenessTV’s founder Brian Robbins on board as producers. Brett Bouttier (The Smosh Movie), Joe Davola (One Tree Hill,...

Vhx recently sought out more cash to keep helping creators sell their movies online in an easy-peasy manner. The online video distribution site just raised a $5 million funding round led by Comcast Ventures.
Vhx co-founder and CEO Jamie Wilkinson told Re/code his company has closed about $4.25 million of the funding push. In addition to Comcast, previous investors in Vhx are also returning for the new round, such as Union Square Ventures, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, and Reddit chairman Alexis Ohanian. Wilkinson believes the remaining $0.75 million will be raised via a “strategic investor” by the end of the month.
Since its inception, Vhx has been an advocate for online video distribution, specifically for independent and lesser-known films from creators. The company initially received $3.2 million in its first funding round back in August 2013, and has since gone on to distribute YouTuber Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart, and Mamrie Hart’s Camp Takota (as...

As it turns out, casting a bunch of social media stars in a film is a good way to ensure that film performs well on digital platforms. Expelled, which stars Vine personality Cameron Dallas as a prankster who gets kicked out of school, reached #1 on iTunes just one day after its video on-demand (VOD) release.
Expelled is produced by AwesomenessTV, which is partnered with Dallas across sites like Vine (where he has more than one billion total loops) and YouTube. Beyond Dallas, the film's cast also includes many other online media personalities, including Andrea Russett, Lia Marie Johnson, Marcus Johns, Michelle Glavan and Teala Dunn.
The film, first announced in November, was shown in theaters on December 12th and arrived on VOD platforms four days later. In the first few hours after its release, it raced up the iTunes charts, and at 8:18 Pm, Russett snapped a pic of it...

While it's almost enough that Alex Goyette's Expelled redeems its one-word title from memories of the polemical documentary where Ben Stein blames the Holocaust on the theory of evolution, this teen comedy manages to be worthwhile on its own merits.
Felix (Cameron Dallas) is an inveterate prankster whose lucky streak finally runs out. Finding himself expelled from high school and with a less-than-exemplary report card, Felix must hide both of these things from his parents (Kristina Hayes and Tom McLaren) while trying to get re-enrolled, despite the efforts of the evil principal (Emilio Palame).
Expelled wears its Ferris Bueller's Day Off influences on its sleeve — Felix even narrates the film into the camera — but it also tones down the...

Earlier this fall, AwesomenessTV announced it was opening a physical store in Los Angeles called Scene@AwesomenessTV. The retail pop-up store had its grand opening on November 15, 2014, complete with merchandise from some of the multi-channel network's top creators like Teala Dunn and Sawyer Hartman. StreamDaily filmed the grand opening of Scene@AwesomenessTV for the benefit of fans who couldn’t attend. The video shows off the store’s products for sale (some which come from the McN’s new movie Expelled), and includes interviews with Dunn, Hartman, AwesomenessTV’s co-founder Joe Davola, and the McN’s global head of consumer products and retail Jim Fielding. “I would say about half the product in the store is either Awesomeness-branded or Awesomeness talent-branded,” Fielding said. He talked about how all the creators meet with Awesomeness in the merchandise creation process, providing their own sketches or photos of merchandise and designing the final...
