Uneven in every aspect and full of ideas which were clearly beyond the grasp of the creators
kuarinofu19 October 2020
Ok, first of all, all the positive reviews with a high score are made from bot accounts, since all of those fake users have only one review (of the film) and those are mostly overwhelmingly positive. I'm not judging anyone, but this is not a good practice to promote a film.

Second, the production quality is way under the level of a 2020 production. I understand the budgetary limitations, but it seems like they spent their budget on the wrong things. It doesn't look good, the color correction is messy, dubbing is also not a good thing for a film in 2020. The CGI is fine, but the film could've done without it. It wasn't a good idea to boost your film's look by spending money on that. Especially since they re-use those a couple of times (using the same CGI sequences backwards).

This is followed by the third and the most important point, which is - inexperience of the creators. It shows in every aspect, the writing, the structure of the film, all the basic aspects of filmmaking.

The inspirations were very clear and the ideas of Stephen King (homages to characters from IT and more), classic time travel sci-fi elements (Time Machine), Lovecraftian unspeakable horror are all present, but all of these are undermined by point #3.

Instead of being a 2hr slow film with lots of tearjerking and not particularly interesting dialogue, this could've been a mini-series (yes, I understand the budgetary limits). There was no need to reverse the story, especially in a confusing way they did it (again, stemming from point #3). If you want your audience to understand what is going on, you have to give basic locations, dates, establishing shots.

The acting was also very uneven, kid actors were surprisingly fine, but some of the more mature performances were horrendous. The overacting of the actor who played Nate Beaumont was a mental pain. His overexaggerated facial expressions were a real pain to watch.

Again, if the story would move from the start to finish the evolution of the characters would be easier to understand, again, the film that also inspired this - Contact (1997) managed that. There are many good films that handle jumps in time much better, like Starship Troopers. It would've been interesting to see what these kids will grow into, and how everything will fall into place. But in this film, they made a mess of it, and due to low production quality (they didn't even have the ability to apply old-age make-up) it doesn't work.

The story is rushed through even though this is a 2hr film, they give lots of unnecessary details, it feels very cheap (but again, because they just didn't have enough experience to cut corners where possible and save money for the more important parts).

It clearly wasn't the worst film I have ever seen, and the ideas are there, but the ideas they had were obviously beyond their grasp in many aspects, not only due to limited resources. So low budget is not an excuse, I've seen better acted and more immersive Russian detective series, with a budget of 10 grand.

Many renowned directors started with cheap films and they only became big because they were able to make good films with only their enthusiasm and creativity.

So I would like to wish the creators to get back to these ideas a couple of years from now, re-think, re-write and try to make a bigger and better film out of this. James Cameron would never be able to create a big-budget masterpiece of Terminator 2 if he would not demonstrate his creative genius while making a lesser in scale but still good Terminator.

And please, drop these practices of botting your scores, it diminishes the credibility of your work.

Not worth spending almost 2 hours on this ordeal...
paul_haakonsen15 September 2020
Yeah, this 2020 movie titled "Intersect" was a swing and a miss, especially for a Lovecraftian movie. Well, I am getting ahead of myself here.

I was lured in by the movie's rather interesting cover/poster, and the fact that this was allegedly a Lovecraftian movie. And yes, the cover/poster definitely also sold the movie as being Lovecraftian, and the fact that the synopsis included the Miskatonic University just cemented that fact. So of course I found myself sitting down to watch writer and director Gus Holwerda's 2020 movie "Intersect".

This 2020 movie was slow paced, incredibly slow paced. And it just prolonged the agony and boredom that there was so very little of any interest taking place throughout the almost 2 hours that the movie ran for. I stuck with it though, given its supposedly Lovecraftian roots. But that was just a stretch. Sure, there were some cosmic influences, but it just never really reached a level where I personally would deem this worthy of being labeled Lovecraftian.

The storyline told in "Intersect" was boring. Let's just be bluntly honest. Yeah, it most certainly was boring. Sure, the movie's script and plot did have some interesting aspects to it, but writer and director Gus Holwerda just never really brought them to a noteworthy fruition.

While the movie was dreadfully slow, uneventful and just downright boring, then it should be said the the casted actors and actresses put on good performances, and they made the ordeal bearable to sit through. But entertainment-wise then "Intersect" was just a shallow experience.

The special effects in "Intersect" were for the most part actually adequate. I liked the portal effects. However, the Watchers - or Lurkers - creatures in the movie were just atrocious to look at. They moved like something taken straight out of a 1990s computer game and also looked that way. It was just an eyesore to look at.

I am a big fan of Lovecraft's works and Lovecraftian work in general, "Intersect", however, doesn't really tickle me in the right places. Nor would I deem it worthy to be branded as being actually Lovecraftian. Sure, it may be Lovecraftian inspired, but that is about it.

My rating of "Intersect" lands on a mere three out of ten stars. I had hopes for the movie when I sat down to watch it, but those hopes vanished like morning dew before the rising sun pretty early on in the movie. In fact, the last 8 minutes of the movie is essentially what you need to watch to get the concept of the movie. Not worth the time or effort really.

Solid visuals, intriguing idea. Bad execution. A missed chance.
alegaru-946637 November 2020
From the first scene it's clear that you are looking at something weird. Then, as the story progresses (or, to be honest, it doesn't) things get more and more confusing and incomprehensible. You hope that going forward with the vision things will start to make sense but no, they doesn't. And the ending is just too stupid to be true. The CGI effects are pretty good for a low budget movie, and the actors are pretty good too. But the plot is so convuluted and absurd that everything fall apart. Basically, i've wasted two hours .

Can't Believe this was actually slated for a theater release?
dreamsincyanide8 November 2020
There is very little to like about this movie. For one, the tone is all over the place. I turned to my co-watcher about an hour in and expressed my sentiments. "Who is this movie for???"

Because it watches like a Hallmark Channel attempt at horror. Is it a horror movie? Is it a romantic movie? Is it a coming of age movie?

I watched it until the end and I still have absolutely no idea!

Apart from the terrible acting, which has already been covered here in the reviews... it's one of the messiest and laziest scripts I've absorbed in some time. Nothing makes sense... and not in a 'good' Lovecraftian way. It just literally tells no sort of cohesive story.

Maybe it'd be better if I watched while I was high out of my mind, but for the average horror fan.... avoid avoid avoid.

Buffled by ratings I had to watch it.
teutonfirst18 September 2020
And boy was I bored to death... Good filming, most of the main actors acted well, but I never saw such dramatization since Bollywood soap opera. The fact that the story is told backwards doesn't help at all. CGI were pretty ok, but the director wanted to make movie AND art at the same time and of course failed like many others. It takes time to make a good movie and tons of experience to make art. This one failed at both.

Hi. I'm you from the future.
jtaasrm13 April 2021
I came back to save myself from this. Wait, do I mean you? Or is it "us"? I'll... we'll... figure it out later, I think.

Anyway we have a message for us concerning this movie.

Don't.

Just... don't.

And please remember: this is your attempt to get back the time you wasted on this,

Trust yourself.

You regretted watching it.

The only redeemable feature of this movie is it causes us to create a time machine. However, it turned out to be a one-time-use-only temporal device that left us stranded in the past and the only hope for returning us to our correct timeline is to keep us from watching this movie. I mean, seriously. The movie stinks so bad we got so focused about erasing it from ever happening that we didn't even check the winning lottery numbers for anytime after seeing this stinker. We so wish you had thought to do that.

OK, new plan. Watch this movie but in the time you take to do some proper R&D after being thoroughly motivated to erase having ever seen it please remember to collect the winning lottery numbers.

OK.

We didn't save this draft to our phone before posting it so we had to do it from memory.

So yeah, I think that's everything.

OH! Wait... If you ever see a green van on a Friday night out with your friends, stay away! The only thing you will get from it is a terrible case of the crabs which turns out to be infinitely more fun than this movie is.

Absolute clown fiesta
mariaspitfire15 September 2020
This is the worst movie I have ever seen. It's insanely boring and predictable. Every character is a cardboard cutout caricature. Sound effects are annoying and overbearing, every voice line is poorly dubbed. The whole time I was struggling to accept that this is a real film and not a parody.

If you want a "so bad it's good" movie, you're better off watching Neil Breen. If you want a good cosmic horror, watch The Void, Black Mountain Side or Borderlands. If you want to feel the sands of time slowly get everywhere and chip away at your soul, watch Intersect.

The audio is off.

The plot is basic yet convoluted for no reason.

The cinematography is suspect, especially with all the unfortunate closeups.

The acting is dumpster fire trash.

The pace drags.

This story could have been told in less time with less confusion and character development.

Not the greatest, not even the goodest. But not the worstest either.
dsruss-770-94162916 September 2020
Meh. It was alright. So, in this Covid world in which we live, the vacuum created by the constantly delayed big budget stuff is going to be filled either by mediocre titles that probably would've under performed in a crowded summer theater (Mulan, Bill & Ted 3, Greyhound) or the arthouse/small/tiny budget festival treats that somehow find a footing with critics and audiences alike (Vast of Night comes to mind). But we have run out of those. Intersect is a perfectly decent SyFy movie of the month. It is inoffensive in its attempts at mediocrity. If it means anything - I didn't pause it when i went to get another beer or release said beers back into the wild. If you like sci-fi, and specifically Lovecraft inspired tales, this is a perfectly reasonable 80 minute movie. Except that they made it 40 mins longer than it needed to be (2 hours??!!). If you are desperate for something and its your genre, have at it. 5/10

Confusing, but Valiant Attempt At Creating a Unique Experience.
betchaareoffendedeasily11 August 2021
This film has a lot of interesting themes, which will and clearly is, lost on most viewers. I don't watch modern TV shows, so I have not seen "Stranger Things", I think those who have are misjudging this film. This is indeed a Lovecraftian film, go read up on Lovecraft, but like most Lovecraftian films, it is a mixed bag. I get the feeling, when you are dealing with the bizarre themes of Lovecraft, it must be hard to make things work well, it can be done, but I can only think of a few examples, such as "In the Mouth of Madness", one of the most Lovecraftian films not based on a specific Lovecraft story, and that movie is also incredibly confusing and in the end you may ask, "Did any of this even matter"? I bring this up, because I get the exact same feeling while watching "Intersect".

Intersect has a lot of confusing time jumps and narrative jumps, convoluted is an understatement. At the same time, it does mostly gel together by the end. I found myself very frustrated in the first half, I had no idea what was going on, it was extremely confusing. The bad thing about it being sequentially in reverse is that it is very hard to get what is going on until late in the movie. I am not going to say they shouldn't have done this though, I think it was a good choice, and while clearly the confusion is irritating, I know this was by design. It actually makes sense why they chose to do it this way by the end if you pay attention.

People complaining about the color correction are confused, it is obvious they used a washed out look on purpose. People are really grasping at straws here. Also the comment about "Dubbing shouldn't be used in 2020".... Uhhhhh, dubbing over dialog is EXTREMELY common in all movies for various reasons... Yikes! Is the acting that bad? Nope! Yes, the actor who plays Nate is a tad over the top, he did annoy me, but he really wasn't awful, and everyone else was just fine other than Ryan's mom, she was also slightly over the top. Most the complaints here are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. I get the complaints about the convoluted and confusing narrative, that is a valid complaint, was really confused myself, but I get it now. Be patient, I don't think it is "up to the viewer to decide" what is going on as some else said, but rather, the answers are all there, but it requires patience to find them.

This is not a movie for everyone as it will be a VERY frustrating experience for most people. For those who have a little bit of patience and like science fiction and ideally Lovecraft, you will find much to enjoy. It just isn't an easy watch.

You get out what you out into it
razorwirekiss-116 September 2020
Yes, it's not a $100 million dollar movie. But it reminds me if how films used to be made. You know, ideas, story. A sheer passion to have your ideas brought to life and shared with others. Not chasing the box office. I really enjoyed it and am thankful for something that made me think instead of feeding me visuals so I won't notice there is actually nothing happening I'm ordering the Blu Ray from their website. Filmakers like this deserve to be rewarded

imagine a porn movie with no porn
ajikude26 September 2020
Imagine a porn movie with no porn and no nudity. Just acting, throw in another dimension, a male actor with a bad nose job, bad dialogue, comical acting, but you still watch it because you like Scifi and you thing it just gonna have a plot twist in it. So you force yourself to watch to the end even though the mouthing doesn't always match the dubbing to English from a foreign language. With a big budget and big actors the concept could have been great I guess. But it is so low budget that even they try convincing you the marbles are something magical. Was it worth it, no. But if you were stoned at home with friends eating ice cream same time it could be a mesmerising movie.

Wish I Could Go Back in Time and Forget I Saw This
prisoner-723 September 2020
Any time a writer tries to tackle time travel it's a sticky situation.. and this movie actually does a pretty good job of handling time/dimensional travel... so it's with great disappointment that the entire rest of the storyline and execution are so bad. I mean, really bad. An endless string of non-sequitur events, bad CGI "aliens", and an unexplainable ending. They could have focused SO much more on the development of the time machine, the alien influence, the aftermath, instead of things like school bullies, love interests, and dinner outings.

Ah well, better luck next time

Possibly the worst movie of 2020
andylautakhwah16 September 2020
2020 is not a good year for cinema, luckily we have tons of VOD horror to keep us occupied. Most of them are very low-cost and indie, but have something you can save. Intersect is low cost, indie, has probably the worst acting you can find this year, and a writer who half-way saw IT and decided to add a 45mins flashback to the main characters teen years out of order and that adds absolutely nothing to what's happening. This should have been a 10 minutes short. It's 120 mins making one of the worst experiences for a moviegoer of 2020.

Massive Waste of Potential
famineomega22 March 2021
This movie could have been an amazing Alien meets hellraiser type of thing. Sadly it's just a Huge waste of everything that went into it. Hopefully none of the people involved in making it will ever get work again. the first 30-45 minutes is a huge setup for a spectacular sci fi horror scenario. Then it abruptly falls flat on it's face and spends the rest of it's life lying there in agony

What a surprise, yet another amateur horror/scifi low budget film where all the overly positive reviews are either those that were directly involved in the project, bought and paid for by the publisher, or just outright fake. I found the review comparing this Tenet particularly far fetched yet amusing, cool story bro. This movie sucks, plain and simple.

Amazing
iancu-4926415 October 2020
This is no doubt the worst movie of all times, the plot, the dialogues, the poor acting, the extremly boring timeline. I have nothing against low budget movies with poor effects, casting and technical struggles. The problem here is that almost every line in this movie is a parody of itself. Feels like it was made by a 10 year old.

Ive paid to see it on iTunes, it felt better getting robbed by a pocket thief 20 years ago when I was a student and really needed the money. Ps: all the reviews over 2 out of ten are fake, new accounts with only 1 review. Watch it if you want to be amazed by how a bad a movie can be, but please don't pay for it like I did, you'll be sorry.

First half is Zero stars
bitbucketchip6 November 2021
I gave it a 5 because it was zero stars when I turned it off, but who knows, maybe the second half was a 10. Not likely, though, because this movie has serious problems.

Problem 1: it isn't entertaining. It's like someone re-dubbed a foreign sci-fi film and introduced a new plot. The dialog doesn't match the characterization. We're told these are doctorate students but they speak like pre-teens. The action is frequently unrelated to the story, and there are scenes that don't belong in the film at all.

Problem 2: the acting. Can't fault the actors too much in a SFX heavy film because most of the time they're standing in front of a green screen reacting to a description of something that will be added later. It's hard to do. And even harder when talent is absent.

Problem 3: the storytelling. Non-linear stories require effort on the part of the audience to follow. The audience won't put in the effort when isn't rewarded. In this film the story isn't clear, with the plot developing very slowly amid seemingly irrelevant SFX flashbacks. It's a challenging technique poorly executed in this film by a director and editor in over their heads.

Problem 4: no audience involvement. There's no mystery, no rising action, no antagonist, no one you're invested in, no character arcs, no stakes of any kind. Just a group of actors saying and doing things. It works. It doesn't work. Matters not. Not interesting.

Intersecting
jonnersu16 September 2020
Decided to watch this based on the cover shot and it was highly rated on iTunes as a new Indy movie.

Going to split my review up into a couple of sections.

Firstly the bad :-( The overdubbing in this sometimes detracts from the movie. It's something I struggle with personally with anything but as soon as I see it I can't I see it and then I fixate on it. The sound effects at times don't feel genuine. Some of the acting at points feels over acted. The story takes a bit of commitment before it gets going and then the pace of the movie settles but never really accelerated at any point.

The good :-) The score is amazing! The story builds nicely, it lets you get comfortable with the characters and then explores their relationships properly and as the film unfolds you learn more about what's going on. Some of the acting is amazing and well thought through. The young cast are awesome and the most enjoyable element of the film, these young actors set the tone very well with genuine performances that make the later scenes and earlier scenes with the adults more poignant.

Overall the story is there and there are lots of clues and Easter eggs laced through the film to help you if you are paying attention. Yes it is no Holllywood blockbuster and there are some issues but I have seen worse higher budget mainstream movies that I didn't enjoy as much. Intersect does well with what it has and it would be interesting to see what the Holwerda's could do with a bit more cash!

Overall give it a watch and maybe another watch so you can see all the small bits that the story has to offer the views along the way.

Overly long, but not a bad idea
siderite8 April 2021
This movie will almost certainly bore you, because it takes two hours to say something that could be said in half that time. Also, I consider it a bit of a minus being set in the Lovecraftian universe, since most of the plot is completely unrelated. It felt a bit like 10 Cloverfield Lane, which had an OK story and then a five minute ending that essentially said "Oh, BTW, this is related to another movie. Just random trivia, carry on!". I guess that labelling it horror is both inaccurate and hurtful to the film. Just adding a few scenes of monstrous darkness to a film doesn't make it a horror.

The ideas explored in the film are not bad, though, and the creator spent a lot of effort to establish all of the characters and tell an intelligent story. This could have easily been an Outer Limits episode and it would have been awesome! As such there is a lot of buildup to an ending that is quite underwhelming. A bit of "it was Agatha all along" kind of vibe. Yet you feel for the characters and understand why they are doing what they are doing.

Bottom line: a decent effort, but ultimately a fail. Could have been good with better editing.

The last 10 minutes is relatively interesting, the rest is garbage.
lord-blade13 October 2020
This movie had a lot of promise. It has a great premise. Unfortunately, it failed to deliver in every regard.

First is the terrible, TERRIBLE acting. This is high school play quality acting, with ridiculously over dramatic scenes and just terrible lines. I've seen found footage films with vastly better acting.

Second is the way the movie is presented. It's one of those attempts at being "timey wimey", where the movie basically keeps jumping back in time to give more buildup and story to what's going on. Unfortunately, it's horribly done and just makes the movie drag on forever. They should have just gone with a normal linear presentation, it would have been infinitely better.

Third, this is a drama, not a horror movie. It's basically a lot of emo scenes that are frankly painful to watch. The only sci-fi really happens near the end, and is over in a flash.

And finally the ending is... well, dumb. No real closure or anything. Just confusion.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this movie at all costs.
