- Reese is left largely on his own to deal with their next number, Anna Mueller, a transcriber for Fetch and Retrieve, one of the hottest Internet companies in the world, it which specializes in search engines. The project on which Anna works is VAL, an acronym for Voice Activated Lookup, an app which is supposed to act as one's voice recognized personal assistant: ask VAL a question on where best to find something, and VAL will respond. Anna and the other transcribers' responsibility is in part to be a human backup for VAL. After looking into Anna's life, Reese believes the reason for Anna being a number has to do with one or a combination of three things: her questioning the activities of one of VAL's clients, who was directed to places where VAL should not have taken him; her living with her cancer-ridden sister, Jill; and/or her secret life as an underground MMA fighter, MMA which is banned in New York. The reason Reese is left to deal with Anna on his own is because Finch has discovered that Nautilus has resurfaced. Based on the Nautilus poster he finds, he believes that the previous Nautilus winner, prodigy Claire Mahoney, is in trouble. He is correct as after being recruited by Nautilus, Claire found that everything she touched on Nautilus' behalf led to an innocent person ending up being dead. After Finch tells her all about Samaritan and it being behind Nautilus, Claire believes she has a way for her and Finch to bring Samaritan down. Finch has to tread carefully as although Samaritan thugs had almost killed Claire in their pursuit of her, Finch isn't too sure if Claire is telling him the truth or working for Samaritan in trying to locate the team.—Huggo
