I'm speechless.
Sleepin_Dragon7 August 2018
The Lair of the Libertines is certainly different, not a story I imagine G.K.Chesterton would have dreamed of in a month of Sundays. The plot is different to say the least, not uninteresting, just that it doesn't sit comfortably with the show's setup. A case where the attempts to shock were in place to mask the oddities of the story, a stoned priest, Lady Felicia's lesbian kiss and Ace Bhatti's rear end, all unusual, as if during a brainstorming session everyone added a random thought. I did enjoy elements of it, Ronni Ancona was great fun as the feisty hotel owner. Perhaps a little too frivolous at times, but it was certainly original.

Watchable, but not a favourite. 6/10

The Lair of the Libertines
Prismark1022 September 2017
This is a very racy episode with some serious dark and sinister undertones, although by the end it is rather fantastical.

Father Brown, Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy end up being stranded. Not to worry Lady Felicia knows someone nearby only to find out that the mansion has organised a weekend of hedonism run by the exotic Madame Chania for three wealthy men who are expecting sex, gluttony and much much more.

However one of the two prostitutes expected to arrive is found dead and then the guests start dying.

Roni Ancona plays the notorious Madame who ends up being the main suspect. Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy end up being objects of desire and Father Brown ends up running for his life.

Fun episode
coltras3522 September 2023
Marooned in the country Father Brown, Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy come across the Hotel Cuba where the exotic Madame Chania is organizing a weekend of hedonism for three wealthy playboys. Two prostitutes are expected but one is found dead and soon the guests are being murdered. Madame Chania would seem to be responsible but Father Brown uncovers a case of hidden identity and exposes a murderer who kills purely for the pleasure of it.

A complete bonkers episode featuring a group of characters who are totally bonkers. I enjoyed it thoroughly, the location setting is grand, the fact the murders are random added to the mystery and the twist wasn't something I would have guessed. Mrs McCarthy's expression when seeing the naked man wearing just wearing a fez and saying "salam" was hilarious.

Stunningly awful...

Warning: Spoilers
Discovered Father Brown and have been binge watching religiously..ok, bad pun. However, THIS episode is like finding a hair in your soup. Grotesquely "different" just to be different. But not different good, different godawful.

My only hope for this episode's salvation (can't seem to help myself) would have been if Father Brown had awakened from some opium-cake induced hallucination. Sadly, he did not. Multiple vicious murders treated with complete indifference.

Amateurish nonsense

Utterly ridiculous entry into an otherwise excellent series. A preposterous cast of characters, ridiculous trapped-in-an-isolated-mansion setup, fan-fiction level plotting and dialog, histrionic acting by the guest stars, and a reveal among the dumbest I've ever seen in detective fiction.

Written by Lol Fletcher, who also wrote "The Three Tools of Death" (electroshock girl) and "The Face of Death" (mask party), which were also pretty bad and over-the-top.

Awful! Be warned

Warning: Spoilers
I have to say that I LOVE Father Brown and have enjoyed all of the episodes so far, but this one was just awful! It was so different from all the rest! I hope they don't keep continuing like this. All of the characters were just creepy and cringy, especially the killer. Father Brown, Lady Felicia and Mrs. McCarthy accidentally end up at a hotel where a bunch of hedonists are hanging out seeking their pleasures, including drugs, nudity, and prostitution. But it was so silly and over the top, it was just embarrassing! I love Mark Williams as Father Brown, and he was still his wonderful self, but everything else was awful. I couldn't wait for this episode to end. I wish I could've skipped it. I'm praying the writers haven't run out of good ideas because so far, they have been so clever and wonderful. Just not this one!

Naked Prey

Warning: Spoilers
What to make of this season three Father Brown episode? It's quite quirky and reminds me of Naked Prey (the scene with Father Brown being hunted), Carry On Movie and all that. Anyway, Sid James would have had a ball in this episode if he were alive.

Anyway, this episode, The Lair of the Libertines, has everything but the kitchen sink. We see Ace Bhatti's birthday suit, and Lady Felicia engages in some lesbian kisses to raise the blood pressure. Anyway, for daytime television, The Lair of the Libertines really went above and beyond. Still, it's worth watching at least once for the beautiful Ronni Ancona.
