John Alvin Neon Tribute (2014)

*** (out of 4)

If Shout Factory! set out to make the most complete featurette/documentaries in the history of DVD/Blu-ray then they really succeeded with PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE since it seems every job on the film got some sort of attention. In this 12-minute featurette, John Alvin's widow Andrea talks about her husband's work on the film, which included the neon poster, which has become quite famous over the past few decades. Alvin talks about how her husband ended up working on the film and how the creative process here would be a lot different than in the work of something like THE COLOR PURPLE. From here we see some of the original drawings and she talks about his work process from the drawing to the selections of colors used. If you're a fan of PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE then you'll enjoy this featurette for what it is. There's certainly nothing ground-breaking here but fans of stuff dealing with the artwork used in motion pictures will enjoy it.
