- Meredith tries to find a sitter so she can go visit Derek, Amelia and Stephanie work together on a case.
- After several discussions with Dr. Herman, April and Jackson must face their situation head on and make a difficult decision regarding their unborn child. Catherine arrives in Seattle and bumps into Richard at the hospital. Meanwhile, Meredith tries to find someone to take care of the kids so she can visit Derek for the weekend, and Amelia shows Stephanie some tough love when they work together on a case.
- We start by watching Amelia light a candle in the hospital chapel, then kick a pew where an intern has dozed off, saying, "There's on-call rooms for that." The sanctity of the chapel is going to be a theme for the night, and we're going to watch several doctors light candles for their own reasons.
Dr. Herman is listing off the complications of Type 2 O.I., and April is devastated by the idea that her baby's bones might be breaking while still inside her belly. Arizona gets emotional when talking with Dr. Herman outside of the room, and Dr. Herman says that's why she can't help them. She takes Arizona off the case.
Catherine Avery arrives and encourages April to have labor induced and to love and care for her baby, no matter how brief the time, and "just hold him until God takes him." April cries as she accepts the advice and says she'll continue to pray for a miracle.
Bailey is next to light a candle, but Meredith interrupts as she starts to pray. Meredith wants to go see Derek, but Bailey won't cover for her. Bailey gets paged before she can resume her prayer.
The E.R. is chaotic, but some of the doctors take a moment to try to figure out what they can do for Jackson and April. Amelia drops by and suggests they each light a candle in the chapel because it makes her feel better. Then she suggest they just give Jackson and April privacy because "that's all they're going to want."
Amelia and Stephanie see a patient named Drew, a young man who's gone blind in both eyes due to a tumor that Amelia is going to try to remove. He's hoping there's a chance he'll see again, but she isn't so sure.
A 44-year-old woman named Brenda arrives in an ambulance after her husband Howard "accidentally" shot her. She doesn't seem confident it was an accident, but he says if he wanted to do it on purpose, he would have. Ben hands some samples to an intern and asks her to take them to the lab right away.
Dr. Herman is trying to get Jackson and April through the paperwork before they induce labor, but they stop short of signing the death certificate in advance. April refuses to sign it.
Stephanie lights a candle, with an irritated Jo standing next to her. Stephanie feels bad for having wished bad things for Jackson and April, and also being the first to discover their baby's condition. Stephanie vows to "make a blind man see."
Meredith gives Alex instructions on taking care of her kids for the weekend, but she's shocked when he tells her Jo is going to be taking the lead because he's on call all weekend. The intern who's been oddly lurking throughout the episode (the one who was asleep in the chapel and the one who was handed the samples for the lab) is paying too much attention to all this.
Brenda, the shot woman, is apparently giving birth to a baby she didn't know she was carrying -- all while Bailey and Callie are beginning to operate on her shoulder. She repeatedly says she couldn't have a baby.
Jackson and April discuss baby names. She doesn't like Anderson because she doesn't like last names as first names -- and Jackson reminds her he has a last name as a first name. They talk about "Norbert" as a name and laugh about how that's the name of a kid who gets beat up on the playground -- then they stop when they realize their child won't make it that long. April leaves the room, though, when she decides she wants to wait for a miracle.
Hunt finds some samples that were meant to go to the lab (the ones Ben gave to the intern). Webber steps in and volunteers to take them. Webber is distracted when he sees Catherine walking down the hallway.
Brenda struggles through pushing the baby out while Bailey tries to stop the gunshot wound on her neck from bleeding. It starts spurting blood, but she gets through the labor and has a new baby girl.
Hunt lights a candle and walks out of the chapel. Alex goes next.
Later, Alex takes Brenda's baby for tests while Bailey and Callie continue to try to save her. She starts coding and Bailey realizes that a pellet that had been lodged near a vessel is gone, which means it probably headed to her heart.
Ben isn't happy about the intern who left the samples sitting around. Hunt wants someone to find her.
Jackson tracks down April and tells her he does believe miracles happen sometimes, but this isn't one of those times. April cries and says it isn't fair. She says she feels like God is being cruel and laughing at her. She stops herself and says she has to go back to work.
Alex shows Howard his baby daughter and he can't believe it, insisting that his wife Brenda couldn't have a baby. They tried for years, he says, and saw doctors who all said they couldn't.
Pierce is going to try to get the pellet out of Brenda's heart, but she keeps saying that Brenda's going to die if she doesn't get it out.
Jackson heads to the chapel and starts talking to God, but he doesn't know what to say. He admits that he doesn't really know if God exists, but April believes and Jackson pleads for Him to "show up for April."
Webber lights a candle and turns to see Catherine sitting in a pew. They talk about their breakup and Webber offers his help for her, Jackson and April. She tells him she wants to be alone, so he leaves.
Amelia and Stephanie are operating on Drew's tumor, but Stephanie is uncomfortable with the idea that Amelia is using Drew's surgery for practice in advance of Dr. Herman's operation. Amelia isn't convinced she can get Drew's sight back and Stephanie thinks she should stop operating if that's the case, rather than using Drew as "a human skills lab."
Pierce tries to get Brenda's heart beating, but it isn't.
Ben finds the mysterious intern and starts to yell at her, but April steps in because she recognizes her. She's not an intern. She's the wife of a man who died at the hospital the night before after a car crash. She was given the scrubs because her clothes were messy. She tells April that she was told she could take her husband's things when she was ready, but she hasn't been ready. April hugs her and tells her she's strong enough to get through it. April then finds Jackson and tells her she's ready to induce, and the baby will be named Samuel Norbert Avery.
Arizona lights a candle.
Webber tells Meredith he can cover her shifts and urges her to go see Derek. Meredith says she doesn't have anyone to watch the kids, but Pierce jumps up to volunteer, saying she would "love to" and referring to them as her niece and nephew.
After surgery, Drew opens his eyes and is a little freaked out that he can see. It's blurry, but he can see. Outside the room, Stephanie is giddy, but Amelia reminds her that she told her to stop. She yells at Stephanie, saying that if she can't keep working in the darkest of circumstances, she's not going to make it as a surgeon.
Howard brings Brenda their new baby.
April is induced and we see her and Jackson hold their tiny baby. It's baptized quickly and they hold the baby, with April noticing that he squeezes her finger for a moment.
Webber walks by and sees Catherine sitting alone. She stands and asks him to take her home, take her to bed and hold her.
Amelia walks into the chapel and sees all the candles at the alter are lit. Hunt walks in and sits next to her. She tells him, "My baby lived for 43 minutes." He reaches out and holds her hand.
