- The world watches as a hostage situation forces Ryan to go in alone.
- The day of Joe Carroll's execution has arrived but it's clear it's not going to be easy as he takes three people hostage in the hospital clinic. His only demand is quite simple: he wants Ryan Hardy to come to the prison. Ryan surrenders himself to him and Joe wants only one thing from him: to admit that he's right. Theo meanwhile does his best to use Joe's situation to his advantage.—garykmcd
- Protestors and news vans converge outside the prison on the day of Joe Carroll's execution. In his cell, Joe hides his shiv.
Ryan Hardy watches the news at home, hiding from reporter's calls.
Guards arrive and transport Joe to the death house and he takes one last opportunity to taunt his fellow inmates.
Theo arrives at a flop house in Newark and collects an unconscious woman, stopping to stab a junkie who tries to confront him.
Jim Vale, the governor's chief of staff, is waiting in the execution prep room, along with Joe's court appointed lawyer, a doctor and several guards. In no time, Joe whips out his shiv, stabs a guard, grabs the other's stun gun and kills the other two, including with a taser to an eyeball.
As the FBI conferences with the warden, Joe joins the feed. His three hostages are standing on chairs, waiting for whatever game he's about to play. He threatens them to ensure they don't try to break into the room or cut his security feed. He issues his "final demand" -- Ryan Hardy there in two hours.
The young woman from the flop house wakes up in Theo's back-up house. She finds an Asian man duct taped and bound to a chair in one room, but once she sees Theo, she's not concerned. She sits down over a can of Spaghettios. Penny is only a little annoyed to learn her big brother killed her junkie friend back at the house.
The Asian man is Frank Takamoto, the nation's top cryptologist, but he hasn't been much help.
Theo updates Penny on the fact everyone is after him and she realizes it means her identity is blown, too. He assures her he has a plan.
Outside the prison, Ryan calls Gwen, who is terrified to hear he's going in to see Joe. She tries to tell him she's pregnant, but Ryan gets off the phone before she can.
Ryan goes in to see Joe unarmed, telling Mike and Max to take care of each other if something happens to him. Joe forces Ryan to strip off his shirt before he lets him in. When Joe demands Ryan put on cuffs before he come in, Ryan bluffs walking away to get Joe to release one hostage, the doctor. When Ryan joins Joe, Joe immediately tasers him.
Theo tells Penny the coded notebook has a name in it that can give him his anonymity back, but first he wants to take out Ryan. Penny thinks it's lunacy.
Back with Joe, Ryan wakes up with wire strung around his neck. Joe yanks him to his feet like a marionette and starts in again about their connection, calling Joe his "soul mate." Joe thinks that's why Ryan didn't kill him when he had the chance.
Joe plans to get Ryan to admit he's the most important relationship in his life, or everyone dies.
In the prison halls, the SWAT team tells Max and Mike that the governor has decided to send them in in ten minutes.
Joe forces Jim to strap Dana, his court appointed lawyer, to an exam table and threatens to cut out her eye until Ryan starts talking about the dreams he's had in which he and Joe are friends and he's teaching Ryan how to kill.
Joe is moved and thinks the dreams mean they're friends. He takes the wire off of Ryan's neck. Joe gets Ryan to admit he enjoyed killing Debra Parker's killer. Joe uncuffs Ryan, who calmly punches Joe in the gut. Joe doesn't fight back, but sinks to his knees and presents his hands for the cuffs.
Ryan slaps them on, telling Joe "you win."
Theo hacks into the prison's security system. As Ryan is leading Joe and the two hostages through the common area, Penny uses the access to release prisoners, telling Theo she's saving him from himself.
Mike, Max and SWAT are locked out as Ryan, Joe and the hostages are surrounded by five prisoners. One takes Joe to settle a beef. Ryan tries to protect Dana, but is outmanned, and Jim quickly gets shivved in the stomach. Ryan rights off the prisoners and tends to Jim before going after Dana with the two prisoners. He drops one with a shiv to the neck then beats the other bloody with a taser, terrifying Dana in the process.
Then Ryan goes after Joe. He finds him being choked by a much larger prisoner and after some debate, decides to intervene. Soon Ryan is being choked and Joe comes to his rescue. Ryan offers Joe a hand to his feet and SWAT finally arrives to take Joe back into custody, but Ryan seems to have been profoundly affected by his latest killings.
Theo explains to Penny that they need Ryan Hardy dead to motivate the person whose name is locked in the coded book to help them.
Ryan calls Gwen, who can't believe that Ryan is planning to stick around the prison to see what happens with Joe.
Betty and Theo talk through cracking the code, settling on books that Joe had in his library that Strauss didn't and homing in on an HP Lovecraft quote. It cracks the code and produces coordinates.
At the prison, Ryan goes to see Joe again, who tells him Ryan is his real legacy and he's ready to die knowing he'll live on through Ryan.
Joe offers Ryan a final parting gift, telling him Theo was born in Philadelphia.
Later, Joe is taken to the death chamber and prepped for execution. Ryan watches. Joe utters his final words: "Quoth the raven: Evermore."
The drugs are injected and Joe locks eyes with Ryan as he twitches into death. Ryan is deeply troubled. He heads to a bar and orders two whiskeys.
He ignores a call from Gwen, then lifts a glass to Joe, saying "here's to you." Then he imagines seeing Joe next to him, raising a glass: "Here's to us."
