- (Spoiler Warning)
Following a global catastrophe, the only way to save the remaining people on Earth is for Cal to travel through the Paragon Gate, a device built and tested by the corporation, in order to harvest a mysterious energy source on the other side. Once there, fatigue and loneliness set in, with just LEM, an AI to keep him sane and on task, and the mechanical voice of the harvester, the days, weeks and months drag on, until he encounters Pope a strange and scared young man, who brings with him more questions then answers.
Wary of Pope the two set out to solve the mysteries of the gate and find that they are copies of themselves on a future Earth. That the AI devices were intended to terminate the wearer upon their cross through the gate, and that the corporation is responsible for all of it.
Following an emotional exchange Pope accidentally shoots Cal, and now it seems the only way to save him is to copy him through the gate.
In a frantic effort Pope throws Cal through the gate only to find him lifeless on the floor, Pope breaks down, not knowing if he has saved the life of possible the only human he'll ever encounter in the rest of his own existence. Cal did successfully get copied and finds himself in the familiar gate room of the corporation facing himself, the original Cal, as the two step closer together a white light burns around them until the point where they touch. Cal is now standing alone in the gate room, getting his bearings, he realises that he is at the point in time before he first went through the gate, but he can remember everything.
In an attempt to rid the world of the ongoing crisis Cal destroys the gate, but is met by a young Pope trying to stop him. Realising there is no hope for his own life, Cal sends Pope to escape the chaos. In utter despair the head of the Corporation orders the death of Cal.
The film ends in the Priestly household, with Cal's Wife and Child watching TV. Pope comes out of the court house announcing that he has successfully brought the corporation to justice, and that the people owe their new found safety to an unknown hero. The camera pans onto Cal's Daughter who is colouring in a medal she has drawn saying "Hero" she carefully places it in front of a picture of her farther and the camera fades to black.
