Brilliant episode

Warning: Spoilers
This episode really took me back to the beginning of Season 2, where I was really enjoying the show. I was constantly hooked by all the plot twists, character interactions (Nygma and Penguin I was very happy to see again), Jim getting thrown in Blackgate and my personal favourite, Barbara Kean finally returning to Gotham. Not one character was really neglected this episode, each had an interesting development. This was the first episode since the 'Maniax' episodes, that I was so intrigued by, I didn't want it to end. Special mention to Cory Michael Smith, for finally getting a spotlight on his character, Edward Nygma. From the anagram in this episodes title to the tricks that Nygma used to trap Gordon in his web, the writers had a lot of fun with this episode, I can tell. Overall, brilliant, enthralling, shocking and well developed. Yes, yes, yes Gotham!

This episode is so dumb...

Warning: Spoilers
It feels like there should be a million different ways in for Jim to get out of being blamed for the murder of the officer. The fact he just gives up and doesn't fight it feels very much written, and very poorly at that. Jim is shown as an idiot, which we know he's not because a few minutes earlier he solves Nigma's difficult riddles. What more, we don't even see the trial, which implies the verdict was swift and it feels like another way of making the viewers feel like there is no other way this situation can go. We are expected to believe Jim is not fighting this because of his inner conflict about killing Galavan, but this is very much unearned, since little to no time in the episode was spent building up to this.

The only thing that merits any stars in this episode is the performance of Corey Michael Smith who is doing a superb acting job in the transformation of Nigma to the riddler, but unfortunately this is not enough to carry a full episode that is not mainly about him.

Bad episode, hope this won't last.
