- [Alfred Pennyworth gives Bruce Wayne some tips while fighting Mr. Cupcake]
- Alfred Pennyworth: See, Master Bruce, big muscles require lots of blood. Strength costs wind. Now, if you're gonna beat a big man, all you have to do... is outlast him.
- [Hugo Strange tells Oswald Cobblepot he's free to leave Arkham Asylum]
- Hugo Strange: You are a sane, gentle, good man. And good things happen to good people.
- Oswald Cobblepot: They do? I've never heard that before.
- Hugo Strange: A true thing. Trust me.
- [Selina Kyle gives Bruce Wayne the pistol he asked for]
- Selina Kyle: You look scared.
- Bruce Wayne: I'm not.
- Bruce Wayne: [Selina hands Bruce the pistol] Is it loaded?
- Selina Kyle: Ain't no point in an unloaded gun. Guns aren't for show, Bruce. And they're not for protection. They're only for one thing.
- Bruce Wayne: [Bruce puts the gun in his pocket] Of course. They're only for one thing.
- [Matces Malone calls Bruce Wayne his son, being that Gotham made the both of them]
- Matches Malone: It's the way of the world, isn't it son?
- Bruce Wayne: Don't call me son.
- Matches Malone: Why? If I did what you think I did, then I made you what you are. Just like Gotham made me. Just like the rich folks like your parents made Gotham. I might as well call you son.
- [Matches Malone tells Bruce Wayne that he needs to kill him]
- Matches Malone: Look at me! I'm a monster. You need to kill me.
- Bruce Wayne: I wish you were a monster.
- Bruce Wayne: [Bruce sets down the pistol] But you're just a man.
- [Hugo Strange talks to Ms. Peabody about letting Oswald Cobblepot out of Arkham Asylum]
- Ethel Peabody: Are you sure about that, letting him go?
- Hugo Strange: Not really. He's an experiment.
- Ethel Peabody: He's a notorious criminal. They'll be an outcry.
- Hugo Strange: The outcry will pass. People are afraid of progress, Ms. Peabody, and yet, somehow, we keep progressing.
- Ethel Peabody: I hope you'll at least alert the police he's been released.
- Hugo Strange: That's enough input, Ms. Peabody. I have other reasons, deeper plans for Cobblepot, that you can't know about now. For your own safety.
- Ethel Peabody: Deeper plans? Deeper than building semi-human creatures in the basement? I'm sure I don't want to know, thank you very much. On your head be it.
- [Hugo Strange talks with Ms. Peabody about what test to give Penguin next]
- Hugo Strange: I'm curious to see how he responds to adverse stimuli. Let's move on to the... ice cream test.
- [Alfred Pennyworth prepares to fight Mr. Cupcake because Bruce did the talking]
- Bruce Wayne: Are you acting like this is my fault?
- Alfred Pennyworth: It's not for me to say, is it, sir?
- Bruce Wayne: How is this my fault?
- Alfred Pennyworth: I told you to let me do the talking, did I not? And did you do the talking? Yes. And I think you'll find, yes, you did do the talking.
- [Alfred Pennyworth tells Bruce Wayne to pick his fights]
- Alfred Pennyworth: Pick your battles. Don't let them pick you.
- [Hugo Strange questions Penguin back-and-forth during one of their therapy sessions]
- Hugo Strange: Blood.
- Oswald Cobblepot: Life.
- Hugo Strange: Throat.
- Oswald Cobblepot: Song.
- Hugo Strange: Cat.
- Oswald Cobblepot: [Penguin smiles] Kitten.
- Hugo Strange: Mother.
- Oswald Cobblepot: Hug.
- Hugo Strange: Crime.
- Oswald Cobblepot: Punishment.
- Hugo Strange: Revenge.
- Oswald Cobblepot: Remorse.
- Hugo Strange: [Hugo smiles] Ah, remorse. Let's talk about that.
- [Hugo Strange tells the Penguin they have a few more therapy sessions together before he's cured]
- Hugo Strange: Just a few more therapy sessions and you'll be right as rain.
- Oswald Cobblepot: [Penguin stammers] More therapy?
- Hugo Strange: [Hugo's voice echoes in Penguin's mind] Oh, just a little. I know there's a discomfort factor, but after all, tis making you better. Yes? Oh, you do want to get better... don't you?
- Oswald Cobblepot: Yes, Professor Strange.
- Hugo Strange: [Hugo laughs, echoing] Oswald, please. Call me Hugo.
- Oswald Cobblepot: [Penguin nervously smiles] Yes, Hugo.
- [Jim Gordon pays a visit to Edward Nygma in the morgue]
- James Gordon: Hey, Ed, you busy?
- Edward Nygma: I'm studying the decomp rate of various color inks to see if we can use tattoos to help determine time of death.
- James Gordon: Hmm. Is that a yes or a no?
- Edward Nygma: [Ed frowns to himself] Please come in.
- [Jim Gordon asks Edward Nygma if he'd heard from Kristen Kringle recently]
- James Gordon: I was wondering if you'd heard from Kristen Kringle lately.
- Edward Nygma: [Ed gives Jim a riddle] I'm strong as a rock, but a word can destroy me. What am I?
- Edward Nygma: [Jim rolls his head to the side] Silence. I've heard nothing.
- [Edward Nygma talks to himself as Jim Gordon leaves the room]
- Edward Nygma: So that's the game, is it, Jimbo? Gonna try to outsmart me? Play me for a fool?
- Edward Nygma: [Ed leans down speaking to a corpse] I don't think so.
- [Bruce Wayne arrives at the Celestial Garden seeing Jeri perform on stage]
- Jeri: [singing] I got a feeling inside of me / It's kind of strange, like a stormy sea / I don't know why, I don't know why / I guess these things have got to be / I got a new rose, I got her good / Guess I knew that I always would / I can't stop to mess around / I got a brand-new rose in town
- Jeri: [re: Matches Malone] You gonna give me a good reason to tell you where he is?
- Bruce Wayne: Justice.
- Jeri: [laughs] Please.
- Bruce Wayne: Money.
- Jeri: Nope. I don't care about money. Try something else.
- Bruce Wayne: I have a gun.
- Jeri: That's a good reason.
- Bruce Wayne: Please, tell me where he is.
- Jeri: [rolls her eyes] Come on, kid!
- [she grabs Bruce's gun hand and points the barrel at her own forehead, Bruce carefully keeping his finger off the trigger]
- Jeri: You ain't even pointing it at me!
- [She releases his hand, and he lets the gun drop again]
- Jeri: What is your problem?
- Bruce Wayne: I've been told it's unwise to point a gun at someone if you're not ready to shoot them. And I'm not.
- Jeri: Very wise, young man.
- [Bruce Wayne confronts Matches Malone for the first time]
- Matches Malone: So, you want to hire me?
- Bruce Wayne: I want someone to die.
- Matches Malone: Wait a while. They will.
- Bruce Wayne: I don't want to wait.
- [Bruce Wayne asks Matches Malone if he's killed a lot of people]
- Bruce Wayne: Have you killed a lot of people?
- Matches Malone: I kill all kind of folks. Just about every way you can. Rich, poor, guilty, innocent. By hand, by blade, by gun. Burned just one guy to death, they call you Matches for the rest of your life. Life's funny, isn't it?
- [Jim Gordon questions Jeri on where she sent Bruce Wayne]
- James Gordon: [Jeri plays with her handcuffs in the interrogation room] Where is Bruce Wayne?
- Jeri: You are so angry. I'm sensing a personal relationship. Maybe like a surrogate father type of thing.
- James Gordon: Where is he?
- Jeri: He is... he's a really good kid. He's got steel in him. He's gonna grow up and be a strong man one day. Well, if he lives long enough.
- [Jim Gordon tries threatening Jeri with his anger]
- James Gordon: This is gonna go a lot better for you if you don't make me angry.
- Jeri: Angry is your natural state, isn't it? You are the infamous Jim Gordon? Everybody knows about your temper.
- James Gordon: This isn't about me. There's a kid out there in danger.
- Jeri: Oh, there's lots of kids out there in danger! Why does this poor little rich boy got your special attention?
- James Gordon: You're trying to make me angry. Do you want me to hurt you?
- Jeri: Could you? I got nowhere else to be.
- James Gordon: No.
- [Jeri drops her hands in disappointment]
- [Bruce Wayne tells Matches Malone how they first met]
- Bruce Wayne: Two years ago. An alley in the theater district. You killed my mother and father, Thomas and Martha Wayne. I was there.
- Matches Malone: Rings a bell.
- Bruce Wayne: You looked right at me.
- Matches Malone: Ah, I was busy that year.
- [Bruce Wayne holds his gun on Matches Malone, to tell him who hired him to kill his parents]
- Bruce Wayne: [Bruce raises his pistol] I can make you tell me who hired you.
- Matches Malone: You think so?
- Bruce Wayne: I can hurt you. I can shoot you in the knee. Or the stomach.
- Matches Malone: But you can't make me tell you a damn thing. Killer's code ain't much, but it's what I've got. If I did what you say I did, and someone hired me to do it, you'll never know their name. Not even if you take me apart piece by piece. You better believe that.
- Bruce Wayne: [Bruce cocks his pistol] Well, then I guess there's nothing left to say.
- Matches Malone: [Matches holds his drink up] Here's to you, son. You've been a long time coming.
- [Bruce Wayne holds his pistol on Matches Malone as Matches waits to be killed]
- Bruce Wayne: You want me to kill you. Why?
- Matches Malone: Little rich kid like you wouldn't understand.
- Bruce Wayne: Try me.
- Matches Malone: A man gets tired... doing wrong and going unpunished. Nothing happens. You start to wonder if... there is a God.
- Jeri: Killing people isn't, you know, that easy. Hey, maybe you've killed people before. You killed people before, blood? No.
- Bruce Wayne: No. But no one's killed my parents before.
- Matches Malone: Price starts at ten grand or so for a simple hit on an adult male vic. Then there's a sliding scale, depending on how hard the job is. Charge double for women. Triple for kids. No babies. I won't kill babies.
- [first lines]
- Gertrude Kapelput: [Penguin goes through a therapy session involving brain stimulation while tied-down in a saturation chamber at Arkham, when he sees his mother talking to him] You don't eat. What's the matter, Liebchen? You are sick. So pale you look. Tell Mama what's wrong. You don't have to tell. I know. Life is hard when you are special. And you are so special. So clever. So handsome. When you are older, with a stick you'll beat away the women. But only if you eat so you can grow big... and strong.
- [as Penguin witnesses himself coming up behind his mother, swinging a baseball bat over her head]
- [last lines]
- Alfred Pennyworth: [Alfred Pennyworth searches the Wayne Manor for Bruce Wayne] Master Bruce!
- Bruce Wayne: [as Alfred finds Bruce's farewell letter, as Bruce narrates] 'Alfred, I have left home for a while to live on the streets with Selina. Please, wait and listen before you react. You need not worry that I'm in danger or that I've lost my mind. I've thought long and hard about this decision and I know it's the right one. Malone's death made me realize a couple of things. You can't kill murder. You can't get revenge on evil. You can only begin to fight such things by not doing them. And you can only fight them where they live, not just at Wayne Enterprises. In the streets, in the slums, in the bad parts of town. So that's where I'm going.'
- Alfred Pennyworth: He's lost his mind.
- Bruce Wayne: [Alfred reads on] 'I'm not going to start battling muggers or anything. But one day, I am going to do something to help the people of Gotham. I don't know what yet, but I will. Meantime, I need to learn stuff. Number one: I need to learn how to live in the same world other people have to live in. Selina's giving me a place to sleep and will show me the ropes, so, like I say, there's no need to worry. I'll be in touch soon and I'll come home eventually. Please, Alfred, trust me and honor my wishes. Don't try to bring me back. I need to do this. Sincerely, your good friend, Bruce.'
