S2, cycle 2: Humorous and well made, despite being a little less heartfelt than I would have liked
I was on the Tube recently and was pleasantly surprised to find a larger poster for this webseries, since it not only made me glad it was getting the publicity its quality deserved, but also that it gave me a chance to recommend it. Doing the latter was a bit of a struggle since it is not an easy show to really summarize and sell, although the mix of comedy and honest character drama is generally what makes it work for me. It is ironic that I said this shortly before I watched the second batch of episodes in the second series because these tended to me more comedic than they were really engaging on an emotional level.
The three episodes see a young couple moving further out of New York to a bigger and more affordable place, although find themselves increasingly out of their Williamsburg clique; a rival female delivery rider to The Guy tries to fulfill her dream of performing in Stomp – making her let down her customers at the same time; finally The Guy joins a group of others as they head upstate for a weekend of fun and drugs, although more mundane concerns tend to dominate at first. All three of these episodes are amusing and well crafted, producing good characters – even if we do not always have reason to like them. This last point is particularly true of the third episode, where I thought there were too many characters who I didn't like – and indeed often did not like each other either, and that the material didn't balance this with a reason to really stay with them anyway. The first two episodes are better as they have engaging characters but mostly they are played more for comedic value – particularly delivery rider Orly.
So in some ways, these episodes are about what you expect, and those that liked the others will like these – as I did. However, this is not the same across the board. The thing that was missing for me was that human touch that several episodes in each cycle has managed to deliver really well; whether it is making it part of a comedic episode, or having just really well observed and delivered characters who we warm to quickly. This is not really the case here and the absence of this does hurt it a little as I felt that something that drew me in was missing – okay the remainder is still more than enough to make it work, but I wanted to be touched by some of the stories and didn't really find that I was.
Despite this small reservation, the show remains strong, the characters good, the production values very high, and generally it is amusing and engaging; hopefully the next cycle/season/whatever will not be too far away, and they can add the aspects missing from this trio.
