In 1948 Lisbon, Amelia, a young girl, who struggles to communicate with her mother after the death of her father, is sent away to stay with her aunt and uncle. She meets Thomas, an Austrian boy who is being fostered while they find his parents who he was separated from during the war. Amelia and Thomas begin to teach each other the true meaning of friendship.
