Replacing the glitz and glamour with drama and grit makes for The Night Manager's best episode yet
ryanjmorris22 March 2016
After two excellent opening episodes, The Night Manager was struggling to keep the momentum building. The show was still compelling, and it's well performed by all involved, but the story seemed to be getting lost amidst the spectacle. I was left wondering whether show could regain the standard of its opening episodes or whether it would slowly fade away into another disappointing BBC mini-series.

Simply put, episode five has successfully reinvigorated the show in every way possible. In this hour alone a substantial amount of plot was covered both in England and everywhere else, and every cast member gave a series best performance. The episode was dark, it was well paced and it featured a quite literally explosive middle act, followed by a deliriously intense finale. Tom Hiddleston gave his performance of the series this episode; stripped away from the glamour of the Mallorca hotel, he was able to really get a hold of his character in ways that the show's scripting hadn't really allowed him before this episode. He took some already great material, and elevated it to something quite exceptional.

With just one episode to go, The Night Manager needs to keep the explosiveness and the grit of this episode, but it also needs to ensure that the narrative remains focused throughout. It's clear that this show makes use of an enormous budget (for the BBC), and it feels as if they've been carried away by this a few too many times.

As long as the finale keeps the narrative grip of episodes one and two, and combines that with the drama and intensity of episode five, we're in for a treat.

Corky
safenoe18 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It was kind of a trope that Corky would bite the dust and be blamed for all the leaks. I remember seeing this trope in an episode of 21 Jump Street where Johnny Depp's character goes undercover, and ends up getting ingratiating himself in the gang by accusing another of being a snitch. I really like The Night Manager and it's a shame season 2 has kind of got stuck in development hell last I read.

So Corky Was My Judas. Who Woulda Thought It????

Warning: Spoilers
This episode starts on Ropers private Jet. Birch and Roper are going over documents that Roper tells Birch have fallen into the hands of Angela Burr. Roper explains that only 2 people in the world had access to that list, and somehow the list has been leaked. Roper also explains that there's basically only 4 people it could have been that swiped the list and leaked it, and Birch is one of them . Good for Quince/ Pine/ Linford / Birch for having an excellent poker face.

So in Istanbul, Roper and Birch are meeting the people of the country in person.

Back in London, Mayhew is summoned by his boss, the one who started the whole leaking process. And finds that he's going to be reassigned. He informs Burr, who realizes that her BOSS is about to be replaced. This is going to put her whole operation on Roper in serious jeopardy.

Ropers group comes to The Haven, where they are about to sell a multitude of arms to a buyer. They put on a very impressive weapon demonstration.

+1 Star for the demonstration of weapons...

Back in London, Burr's operation is being broken apart. Agents are being reassigned.

Haha, back at the Haven, Corky and Jed show up. A very odd place for Roper to have his squeeze sent to. Corky is taking a break from boozing. And Jed she just cannot take her eyes off of Andrew. That's not suspicious at ALL.

Burr is approached at HOME, by Drumgoole (Tobias Menzies!!) who tells her basically that she's screwed, that the country (England) needs people like Richard Roper in place to do their country's good work. Forces above her pay grade are obviously working against her.

Roper finally breaks it to Jed why she is there in Turkey. He suspects HER of being part of the leak problem. Birch meets with Jed, who asks him who he is, and he TELLS HER!!! Oh wow how stupid that is. As jeopardized as his position is, he tells JED who he is and why he is there???? In the middle of Roper's Turkish merc base camp he's going to confide that now?? LOL

-1 Star for that ridiculous risk.

When Roper returns to the tent, Jed says it was HER that took a picture of this weapons list on her phone. She says she left her phone lying around and Corky gave her her phone back to her. Planting a seed that Corky is the leak/ spy in Roper's head. LOL like Roper would start to fall for that his most trusted guy, Corky , was the leak??? Corky the guy who has been suspicious of Birch from the beginning, and Roper is going to suspect Corky????

Now, Birch is off at night roaming around. He runs into a couple of civvies who had a family member killed during the demonstration of weapons they put on. With all the suspicion, Roper doesn't have a constant eye on Birch at this point??? LOL Corky catches Roper trying to sneak back into Camp after Birch dispatched a cabbie to deliver intel to a Hotel in Istanbul. Corky and Birtch fight!!! And Birch beats the crap out of him and turns him in as being the one he caught trying to sneak through the fence!!! Oh no he killed Corky!!! Haha, and now Roper thinks Corky was the leak for sure!!! Good one, Birch!!!

-1 Star for All too convenient how all that fell into place. And how quickly Roper seems to cast off the death of his trusted friend.

In Istanbul, the Cabbie gets the intel on the weapons trucks to the contact, who sends the intel to Burr. Burr approaches Mayhew, who has to decide to either Bust Roper or have his career continue. Mayhew decides to help Burr and go after Roper. The US Military is alerted to search these trucks at the Syrian border.

At the Haven, Roper has a nice little intel setup going , with satellites monitoring the progress of his trucks. Satellite imagery is being followed now by Burr and by Ropers crew at the same time. Cue dramatic music!!!

LOL, the trucks are stopped, searched. What do they contain? Farm equipment and grain. Oh my Roper pulled a fast one on the leaker whoever it is!!!

+1 Star for the trucks containing grain and farm equipment.

And Steadman, Burrs US contact is pissed. And when Burr gets home, her house has been ransacked and her husband knocked out cold.

Back with Roper, they fly out of Turkey and Back to Cairo!!! And guess where they are staying??? At the Hotel where Pine worked when this all began!! Oh this is lovely!! Back to where the bromance started!!!!

+1 Star here for back to where it all began!!!
