Awaiting trial for the murder of Sabine Mason, Jack Harmer is fatally shot in his cell, while a car is spotted racing away and the jailer Erol Dumas distracted Dwayne and J.P., who were acting as bailiffs, with rum, but no access was free. A hidden gun is found, with Sabine's husband pastor Mason's fingerprints, but he didn't fire it. Jack's fresh widow Mae benefits from a recently contracted a fat life insurance, but may be expecting the child of Jack's brother Paul, a drug trafficker who returned to the island after a bank robbery jail term. Humphrey must construct the time line to solve the case, the only way to impress his visiting father, Martin Goodman QC, who assumes he should be helped to save his marriage and even asks the commissioner for his release from the 'dead end job' to return to England.
