While Kyle is mostly reduced to stomping around shouting, Kat gets to show a decent level of competence by working out that Ryan has been spying on Phoebe, and Ash gets to keep a cool head and make the final deduction.Even Phoebe shows she's no helpless damsel in distress, given that she's basically escaped when the rescue party arrive.
Unfortunately, the Maddy/Oscar storyline is utterly ridiculous.There's no real reason for Maddy to hide the fact she's going back to school from him (despite Marilyn and Roo's attempts to paint it as romantic), and even less for Oscar to decide she wants to break up with him, and the most musicale of musicale reasons for him to actually WANT her to break up with him.It's such a ridiculous betrayal of their character arc that the supposedly cute scene of him practising a break up speech borders on making him unlikable.
