“Unforgivable,” a film hailing from El Salvador, won the best of the festival award during the 2021 edition of the Palm Springs International ShortFest.
Directed by Marlén Viñayo, “Unforgivable” follows a hitman for the 18th Street gang as he serves his sentence in an evangelical Salvadorian prison, where he is punished not only for his crimes, but for being gay. Selected by a jury consisting of 2020 ShortFest best of festival winner Bérangère Mc Neese and Sundance Festival programmer Ania Trzebiatowska, “Unforgivable” will receive a $5,000 cash prize. The honorable mention in the best of festival category went to French film “Palma.”
“Step Into the River,” from both China and France, won best animated short at the festival, with French film “Navozande, the Musician” earning an honorable mention. “Step Into the River,” directed by Weijia Ma. Amsterdam-based documentary festival IDFA has crowned Firouzeh Khosrovani’s Radiograph Of A Family as Best Feature-Length Documentary at its 2020 Awards Ceremony.
Taking place both at the city’s Vlaams Cultuurhuis De Brakke Grond as well as online, the ceremony also saw prizes awarded to Gorbachev. Heaven, which took Best Director for Vitaly Mansky, Inside The Red Brick Wall, which won Best Editing, and Nemesis, which took Best Cinematography.
The Best Feature-Length Documentary winner receives €20,000 while other awards range from €10,000 to €2,500.

The International Documentary Association has announced the nominees for its 36th Annual IDA Documentary Awards, and a certain streaming service dominates. Netflix scored a leading 18 noms for the 2020 IDAs, more than three times its nearest rival. PBS is second with five, followed by HBO (four).
The IDA also said today that its 2020 ceremony is going virtual on January 21.
“The nominees present an inspiring and urgent range of stories from around the globe,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA. “The broad range of subjects and approaches to storytelling underscores that documentary is our most exciting form of cultural expression, a vital art form and a crucial element of democratic dialogue.”
Ten films are up for the marquee Best Feature award: Collective, Crip Camp (Netflix), Gunda (Neon), MLK/FBI (IFC Films), The Reason I Jump (Kino Lorber), Reunited, Softie, Time, The Truffle Hunters (Sony Pictures Classics) and Welcome to Chechnya (HBO).
The helmers of five of those films also are up for Best Director: Garrett Bradley (Time), Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw (The Truffle Hunters), Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp), Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI) and Jerry Rothwell (The Reason I Jump).
On the TV side, five programs will vie for Best Curated Series): ESPN’s 30 for 30, PBS’ American Experience, Thirteen Productions’ American Masters, Illinois Public Media’s Reel Midwest and PBS/World Channel’s Reel South.
The nominees for Best Episodic Series are Cheer (Netflix), Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America (AMC), Last Chance U (Netflix), Seven Planets, One World (BBC America) and We’re Here (HBO).
Up for Best Multi-Part Documentary are Asian Americans (PBS), Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered (HBO), City So Real (National Geographic), Hillary (Hulu) and Lenox Hill (Netflix).
“This is a year that has been one of reflection, looking inwards, and living life differently than we have always known it to be,” said James Costa, co-chair of the Feature Documentary Nominating Committee and IDA Board of Directors’ co-vice president. “Through the art of filmmaking these films gave us an opportunity to truly look and learn through the lenses of others.”

The IDA also said today that its 2020 ceremony is going virtual on January 21.
“The nominees present an inspiring and urgent range of stories from around the globe,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA. “The broad range of subjects and approaches to storytelling underscores that documentary is our most exciting form of cultural expression, a vital art form and a crucial element of democratic dialogue.”
Ten films are up for the marquee Best Feature award: Collective, Crip Camp (Netflix), Gunda (Neon), MLK/FBI (IFC Films), The Reason I Jump (Kino Lorber), Reunited, Softie, Time, The Truffle Hunters (Sony Pictures Classics) and Welcome to Chechnya (HBO).
The helmers of five of those films also are up for Best Director: Garrett Bradley (Time), Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw (The Truffle Hunters), Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp), Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI) and Jerry Rothwell (The Reason I Jump).
On the TV side, five programs will vie for Best Curated Series): ESPN’s 30 for 30, PBS’ American Experience, Thirteen Productions’ American Masters, Illinois Public Media’s Reel Midwest and PBS/World Channel’s Reel South.
The nominees for Best Episodic Series are Cheer (Netflix), Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America (AMC), Last Chance U (Netflix), Seven Planets, One World (BBC America) and We’re Here (HBO).
Up for Best Multi-Part Documentary are Asian Americans (PBS), Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered (HBO), City So Real (National Geographic), Hillary (Hulu) and Lenox Hill (Netflix).
“This is a year that has been one of reflection, looking inwards, and living life differently than we have always known it to be,” said James Costa, co-chair of the Feature Documentary Nominating Committee and IDA Board of Directors’ co-vice president. “Through the art of filmmaking these films gave us an opportunity to truly look and learn through the lenses of others.”

Joan Barnett, the Emmy-nominated producer of the television movie Adam, died in Boston at age 74 after a prolonged illness.
Barnett was an executive producer for Adam, a 1983 film about the kidnapping and murder of Adam Walsh and the attempt by his parents (including later reality crime drama host John Walsh) to pass national child protection laws in its wake.
At the end of each broadcast of the film, missing children’s photographs and descriptions were displayed along with a telephone number for tips on their whereabouts. Some 37 children were found as a result. President Ronald Reagan provided a voiceover on the photographs segment for the 1985 airing.
Barnett began her career as an associate producer and general manager for Alexander H. Cohen in New York, working on television specials, films and Broadway shows. In 1974, she moved to California and opened a casting company with Linda Otto.

Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is climbing back into the premium cable ring to play legendary boxer Jack Johnson in a limited series in development at HBO.
Titled Unruly, the six-part series is being billed as “an unapologetically Black, no-holds-barred telling of Jack Johnson, the world’s first Black Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Kim’s place in Saul’s journey became clearer on Better Call Saul Season 5 Episode 10, “Something Unforgivable.”
Back in my review for Better Call Saul Season 5 Episode 7, “Jmm,” I made this statement:
“Kim’s actions are making it clear that she’s enabling Jimmy to become Saul. Kim isn’t the last tie to Jimmy McGill but actually another bridge to Saul Goodman.”
I proceeded to claim that I couldn’t quite track her journey to this point, but “Something Unforgivable” puts it all into focus.
Kim hates snooty lawyers.
It’s not a huge revelation, as most of this season had explicitly explored this. She couldn’t stand Acker comparing her to them; she went after Kevin and Mesa Verde just to stick it to them, and she resigned from her fancy lawyer position at Schweikart and Cokely to take on more pro bono work.
The last straw, though,...

The following contains spoilers for Better Call Saul season 5 episode 10.
Better Call Saul has had some wild years but season 5 has to be among the most action-packed. This is a season of television that not only found Jimmy McGill practicing law under his Saul Goodman alias for the first time, it also blended his legal world with the criminal one in some fascinating and terrifying ways.
Lalo’s brief invasion into the Goodman household in season 5’s penultimate episode is not something anyone will soon forget. Not only that but it sets up a season 5 finale in which Jimmy and Kim must deal with their new reality and Gus must take care of the meddlesome Salamanca family once and for all.
That’s a lot of ground to cover for one episode of television, let alone an episode of television that has to serve as the ending for a thrilling season.
