- Upon his release for juvenile detention, sent there in place of his older brother, Marvin must decide between forgiveness or revenge.
- The story is about Marvin who spent 4 years in a juvenile detention center from the age of 17. Marvin was sent there because one night his older brother Jack struck a girl with his car killing her and Marvin in trying to protect his brother, accepted the blame for the accident.
Why?... With Jacks future set to attend Harvard, Jack could have possibly gone to jail for life and with Marvin only being a minor it was only 4 years out of his life. It was an easy decision for Marvin or was it?
The film bounces back and forth between the present when Marvin gets out of juvenile detention, returns home and to the recollection of his memories serving time in the detention center.
Marvin's father is a caring and loving man, but their relationship is also very strained because while his father supported what Marvin did for his brother he also at the same time made excuses for Jack not coming to visit Marvin. Because of this Marvin developed a lot of resentment towards his brother.
Marvin's story is his internal struggle between forgiveness and revenge. His feelings of revenge were encouraged by the other teens at the detention center and this fueled his anger toward his brother. Meanwhile, his therapist tried to steer him towards forgiveness and grace.
Forgiveness is graceful but not simple. Revenge is tempting but wicked. How do we deal with these strong conflicting urges that live deep within us all especially when the circumstances have grown complex, just like Marvin's have grown.
