- What's the importance of Gandhiji's values in today's corrupt world? Do they even have any value left? Can anyone lead a peaceful life by implementing those values in day-to-day life? Questions such as these find answers in Gandhigiri. NRI returned Rai Saheb (Om Puri) strongly believes in the principles of Gandhi. In fact his father had played an active role in the freedom struggle (Rai Saheb's father was a Indian prince who supported Gandhiji in his freedom struggle, due to which he was sent off to Mauritius as bonded labor. However, even in Mauritius the prince educated other slaves about their human rights and led a rebellion to freedom against the Brits).
when Rai Saheb decides to return to India to his district, his political friends want to take advantage of his Gandhian values and connect with the public for their own electoral gains. One such politician is Kranti Pandey (Anupam Shyam). He has inaugurated the poultry farm of Khalil (who has taken a bank loan for the purpose), but the very next day Khalil's rival has stolen and eaten all the poultry. Rajaram Pandey (Ravi Singh) is Kranti's political rival (both of whom are vying for Rai Saheb's attention and votes).
Kranti is distraught as Rajaram has killed his son in a gunfight and now wants revenge. Bakait Singh (Sanjay Mishra) is a town loafer, who has dreams of marrying a village belle even in his advanced age. Yuvraj (Rishi Bhutani) is a young boy from a poor family, who is unable to get into college. Disha (Dolly Chawala) is his girlfriend from a rich family, who has gotten into college and promises to use her family connections (she is Rajaram's sister) to get Yuvraj into college as well. Yuvraj is worried about disappointing his mom and lies to her that he is off to college.
Bansi (Brijesh Karniwal) is a pick pocket, who takes Yuvraj under his guidance and umbrella. Bansi considers Bakait as his guru. Bakait has his heart on Jayanti (Meghna Haldar) who is a con artist & has lured Bakait, but Bakait suffers from impotence. Bakait goes to the extent of taking a Viagra injection to impress Jayanti, but she ditches him.
Bakait & his gang tries to rob Natvarlal (Mukesh Tiwari), who turns out to be a conman himself. He reveals that Rai Saheb is returning to India with his treasure and invites Bakait and gang to loot it. Bakait and gang obstruct Rai Saheb's convoy when it arrives in India but are arrested by Police inspector (Amit Shukla).
At his palace, Rai Saheb meets Rajaram and lectures him about the natural demise of the country in the blind pursuit of progress. He wants sustainable progress. That evening Rai Saheb posts bail for Bakait, Bansi, Yuvraj and Khalil. He promises to pay off Khalil's debts and promises to get Yuvraj into college if they agree to stay in his palace and adopt Gandhiji's principles in their daily lives.
After returning to India, Rai Saheb comes across four different people who've walked on the wrong paths and made wrong choices due to various circumstances. The movie beautifully captures the efforts made by Rai Saheb to make them realize the importance of Gandhiji's values in today's age & time.
But Rai Saheb is disappointed when the public is bored at his rallies when he talks about Gandhiji's values and vision. Meanwhile, Kranti attacks Rajaram and shoots him down in front of Rai Saheb. Rai Saheb inspires Yuvraj to provide evidence in court against Kranti. Meanwhile Natwarlal enters Rai Saheb's palace as a priest and is given the duty to manage the palace temple. Also, Jayanti enters the household as a destitute woman with the aim of getting impregnated by Rai Saheb. But Rai Saheb sets her right with a lecture on Atma and her obsession with the material world.
Rai Saheb wants to get Disha married (after Rajaram's death), which infuriates Yuvraj. All is seemingly lost when at the last possible minute Rai Saheb reveals that Yuvraj is the groom as he is aware of Yuvraj's love for Disha. Yuvraj is overcome by emotions & ends up revealing that Natwarlal, Bakait, Khalil & Jayanti are all frauds. They are super angry.
Kranti contacts them and makes a deal with them to conduct a bank robbery & implicate Yuvraj in it, so that Yuvraj is discredited and cannot be a witness against Kranti. The police inspector arrives at Rai Saheb's palace to arrest him for aiding criminals. Rai Saheb appears to consume poison and commit suicide. This forces the gang out in the open who come to pay their last respects to Rai Saheb. They express their sorrow at their deeds and promise to be straight. This is when Rai Saheb reveals himself and says that this was an elaborate plan to cure Bakait and his gang.
