Gets way too convoluted
saraccan11 September 2018
It's got a nice premise even though it is impossible not to see the similarities with the Black Mirror episode "White Christmas". We follow the main character trying to achieve something but she constantly gets sidetracked with other things which makes the story a bit convoluted. It almost felt like they added these extra events to turn this into a feature length film.

It's about a girl trying to wake her brother up from a coma through a drug that lets you have time-compressed VR experiences.

Great concept, good ideas, but at the end it feels lifeless
JurijFedorov7 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What worked: Concept, plot was decent at many points as there were often new things happening.

What didn't work: Acting, pacing at many times, the ending dragged on and went nowhere.

It just does not deserve top marks. On the other hand, it's a decent movie that does keep you entertained for a bit over an hour minus quite a few scenes. It does keep going for too long. And the acting is extremely stiff. Basically it wanders all over the place going nowhere.

The concept was clever. Going in and out of the dream world is a super interesting idea that is used in amazing movies like Inception. The "does she dream or not?" is a silly idea though unless you make it well. Because basically it takes you out of the movie. If any scene can be a dream and there is absolutely no logic to it, well then what scenes am I supposed to focus on and what scenes don't matter? This movie does suffer from that effect quite a bit. It's hard to avoid though, and with writers that are not from the top shelf this is not something you just can solve with an easy rewrite. You basically are solving a problem that exists just to ruin a plot. Make it interesting at all times!

The acting was just terrible overall. Not really acceptable in 2017 where great actors are found on every street corner. There are much better lead actresses out there. I know she is very attractive, but she is playing a genius here. Her being attractive or not doesn't matter at all to the plot. Please do a better casting job! Also, the director was just not good. While the actors were flat and emotionless they didn't have many emotion filled scenes to act out here. I know how this goes. A screenwriter sits down and writes something he feels is amazing and deep. I myself feel that about all my work initially. Then a director, who is not a writer, is in over the writting and agrees. They film it and discover that it's not really that deep. It feels very intelligent on paper, but the film reveals quite a few plot holes. But they probably didn't focus on jokes at all because it was supposed to be an Oscar winner. At least add a few jokes, funny scenes or action scenes. Something to bring energy into this emotional drain. Unless you know for a fact the screenplay is amazing you are supposed to add fun to it. Hell, do that anyhow!

Mostly the non-fun factor here comes from the lead actress being cold all throughout the movie. There is zero emotional range here and as she is shown in all scenes the movie really feels boring 25% of the time.

There are a lot of scenes where we just see her walk in or out of glass doors. I get that the director wants to illustrate that she is walking in or out of the hospital, her own apartment building, her work. But when all buildings and doors look the same it's just another boring white wall hallway scene. At least make her live in a house, or make the hospital clearly a hospital. Basically it all feels like she is teleporting all over the place to boring locations. We have a 1 minute scene at the hospital. Then a 1 minute scene at her work. Then a 1 minute scene at the hospital again. Then again a 1 minute scene at... you get the point. And she always just shows the same single emotion in all scenes: depression. She just wanders about. Her life seems so damn boring that it's incredible she somehow finds the will to work. Also, the bad writing shows itself in her dialogue lines. She is supposed to be a programmer genius, but all her lines go like this "We can wake up from coma íf we just try hard enough." That's not genius. That's just a basic teenage girl talking. The writer should have looked up at least some programmer or psychology terms. I never once felt like she was intelligent. I myself need to look up terms all the time when I write. You are not supposed to know this. Just make sure it works at the end.

I'm a huge sucker for sci-fi movies. So of course I did enjoy this overall. But it's just too boring for me to rewatch now that I know the plot. The plot also is not even that good. The ending feels rushed even though the movie feels 20 minutes too long. I didn't even quite understand what this movie was trying to show or tell me. It felt like any scene could appear at any point. There were no clear theme to be found here. This would need a rewrite and a recasting. But one or the other could make it a movie worth recommending. There are much better small budget sci-fi movies out there that feel better written and acted. It's worth watching if you adore sci-fi. But if you skip it you won't really miss much at all.

Had potential to be a great film
ddianami1 December 2017
OtherLife had potential to be a great film, but the story development fell through. Great premise, great idea, thrilling, but no real story. Decent acting but not very well scripted. All in all, a fairly predictable movie, especially the ending.

Would recommend watching Total Recall, the Matrix, or Inception instead of this one if you want a more engaging and well-written movie with a good execution, however, this one will suffice if you're bored and just looking for any thrilling Sci-Fi to watch.

The "DMT security" was a nice reference to DMT, the psychedelic drug, which I laughed at. Clearly this was the source of inspiration for the writers, considering the DMT-type visuals that were added in some scenes.

Good Original Sci-Fi if You Haven't Seen Playtest
Kim_Kobusch_Simonsen30 October 2017
OtherLife is the story of a piece of software that can transport you into a dream-like world (like Total Recall). The movie discusses the implications of the software through the 2 developers' secret projects with the software.

For a low-budget science fiction movie there is a lot of positive things to point out. I was personally impressed with the visual effects and the courage to tell the story through the language of cinematography (dolly zooms, Dutch angles, color-grading, etc.). When it comes to acting and sound design I found the movie did a decent job and it never felt like an amateur low-budget movie to me.

Unfortunately there were 2 things that annoyed me about the movie: Firstly, the movie takes ideas from existing sci-fi which makes the story unoriginal and predictable (to some extend). It reminded me in particular of 2 Black Mirror episodes; White Christmas and Playtest. If you haven't seen Black Mirror I think you will find this more original, less predictable and consequently enjoy it more. Secondly, the protagonist is a very smart woman working on the software, but she only appears to be smart when working on the software and not in any other part of her life. I don't want to give any examples of this since that would spoil the plot. If you don't expect to share these issues then I believe you will like or maybe even love this movie.

In conclusion i enjoyed watching the movie, and I am surprised by the low rating (my ratings are usually 1-2 points under the average). Despite a few issues I will definitely keep my eyes open for this directors next project.

To me OtherLife is a decent movie which amounts to a 6/10 in my rating distribution.

An Australian movie that is truly world class.
carolethecatlover16 June 2017
Otherlife, from a novel, Solitaire, by Kelley Eskridge, which was sold and optioned and rejected, is resurrected and made in Western Australia. It looks expensive, professional and could have been a product of Industrial Light and Magic. The graphics, special effects that do not make you think 'cgi' are so realistic that you need to physically hold onto your seat.

It will be billed as Science Fiction, but really it is Speculative Fiction. In an all too near future, with a 'what if' with some mega modern corporation, were to be stolen, or is it? You are wondering just what is happening, unless you pay close, really close attention. The main premise is just too likely to become a reality in my lifetime. There are 3 premises in this 95 minute film.

The other reason this is a must see film is the chance to spot future and rising stars, more Australian stars, we can never have too many in Australia. Also technical expertise (some of them will be Kiwis, for sure) and directors that are better than good. It is also spoken in dinky di Strine. No fake American or British accents. This film comes together smooth perfection. Best film so far in the Sydney film festival, 2 days to go.

So much potential ruined by one plot twist too many
ajping17 February 2018
This was a rock solid film until the producers ruined it about 3/4 of the way through with a nonsensical ending. Interesting sci fi, believable characters, an awesome plot twist a third of the way through the film, and decent acting. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the film was until it went off the rails.

However, the ending was incredibly frustrating because of how unbelievably silly it was, totally destroying all the good work built up over the first part of the film. Sad, sad, sad! It could've been an excellent film!

Hard to like
kingsx_6415 September 2019
It's hard to feel anything for the lead, because she comes off very unlikable. And liking, or feeling sympathy for the protagonist is probably kind of important. Although there were many beautiful shots, there were just as many unneeded slow scenes. I tried to like it. But I didn't.

Pretty Terrible & I'm a Sci-Fi lover.
phranticness29 March 2019
I love Science Fiction movies and I'm usually willing to put up with mediocre character development, and plot holes, but in this case I was so frustrated that I fast forwarded some parts of the movie. This should have been condensed into an hour long black mirror episode. The cinematography and acting was decent, it was the plot, characters, and pointlessly long scenes that annoyed me. The "twist" wasn't really a twist, it's what you expected to happen throughout the movie. I didn't bond with the characters; the only character I actually had feelings about was Sam and I obviously disliked him. The father was pointless; the lover, Danny, was pointless. The brother was only important to the story, I didn't care about his well being. I'm probably being harder on this film that I normally would, but that's because it had the potential to be awesome...instead.....I'm taking the time to warn you not to waste your time.

If you like Black Mirror, look no further.
BeeSang22 October 2017
Like a chapter of Black Mirror, this is a near-future sci-fi story that has good acting, action, innovative sets, and a great plot. Keeps your brain engaged and entertained. Wish it could have been a mini-series because there are a lot of interesting subplots to explore. If you like this movie and haven't yet seen Black Mirror, please find it and enjoy.

Decent Aussie sci fi
latinfineart24 May 2020
Not a bad film. A bit convoluted. Could have been alot better had the script been more focused. Decent performances. Good production. Hard for us sci fi enthusiasts to get a good fix these days.

Story DOES Matter!!!
yan_tb29 April 2018
Under the influence of latest development of "nearly" Sci-Fi shows (Black Mirror, etc.) this one has an enticing idea and I really wanted to love this film. The thing is, without a developed story line, I kind of lost interest after 3/4 of the film where it was obvious that there was no telling between reality and imagination anymore and that we're up for a twist. which was, in turn, disappointing, as well as the ending which lacked resolution and leaves the viewer puzzled and waiting for more.

The only reason I am writing this is because I actually felt this film has good potential in the first 20 minutes.

However, I like the quote : "As far as your brain is concerned, fantasy and reality are chemically identical."

Definitely deserved a better review than 6.5
GraXXoR17 October 2017
*A no spoiler review so this will be pointless for anyone looking for confirmation/discussion after watching.*

Overall: Highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, having no idea what it was about when I clicked on the icon in Netflix, so was slightly disappointed to find it given such a mediocre score on IMDb.

I will not give away the plot, suffice it to say that you'll have stay on your toes to follow the hints and clues. On a second watch, they are quite cleverly there!

The acting is first rate! The lead role's character and background are sufficiently fleshed out and approachable, and the majority of the science is quite convincing.

Moreover, like much of the best speculative fiction, the premise raises some philosophical and moral questions: In this case, regarding the application of cutting edge technology.

While not entirely original in plot (but then, what film truly is in the 21st century?) the adaptation and implementation makes for a worthy and memorable ride with some visceral and quite disturbing moments, not to mention a spot of exercise for the old noggin.

Solid 5 for some but 6 for me

Not bad, certainly not great but not bad. I believe given bigger budget and better planning the staff of this movie would create something a lot better.

Lots of potential.
jamalking1513 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Too predictable, and it fell for the overused simple plot: Evil partner wants to make money on another's work. Could have presented better ethical dilemmas or even finished a full story, but instead it became lost in imaginary worlds and fear of technology. I'm guessing the funding for the movie ran out and they just dumped what they had on us. But, the acting was good, and main character likable.

Interesting premise
TdSmth51 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The beautiful Ren (is that supposed to be a name?) works at some company where she developed a "software" in liquid form that when put into a person's eye allows him to experience something for several hours or so, an experience that in real life only takes place during a minute or so. The company and it's product are called OtherLife because the plan is to offer people to experience their dreams. But financially the company isn't doing well, just as the release of the product will be in 5 days.

Ren has a brother in a coma and she's "treating" him with the eye drops hoping we will snap out of it somehow by making him relive the same day of the accident over and over. At some point his eye twitches. Her father though is ready to pull the plug on the brother.

One day, Ren's patient boyfriend finally gets to spend some time with her. She gives him an eye drop where he experiences some snowboarding. He grabs another vial hoping to relive the experience but instead grabs a vial meant for Ren's brother so this guy ends up dead. That allows Ren's partner Sam to get some investment from a jail company. The idea is to put people away in virtual OtherLife jails for years when in reality they are only "in jail" for a minute. And Ren is the first one to undergo this virtual conviction. She's sentenced to a year. Her cell has a wall made up of LEDs showing the day number. When 365 hits, Ren is ready to get out, but the counter tuns again to "1." Ren, desperate, manages to escape, only to find out she hasn't been in the lab but in some actual single cell room out somewhere. She escape the security people and meets up with a friend. She ends up making some interesting discoveries and will have to find a way to return OtherLife to its original purpose of improving people's lives.

OtherLife features the lovely Jessica De Gouw and has an intriguing premise that it manages to work out more or less satisfyingly. The whole jail bit didn't really fit into and wasn't suited for the movie. But as many sci-fi movies of late, it offers so much more than the usual tired old storylines of other genres.

predictable, boring and full on unexplained scenes for a hard Sci-Fi movie
thetrollbane19 June 2018
OtherLife has and interesting premise but no real story. The actors perform decently but the script isn't very good. The plot is underdeveloped and is mediocre at best. The action takes place in a science lab, in which is a man in coma. His sister uses some state of the art unexplained tech to communicate with him - not a new idea. Unfortunately nothing isn't properly explained in this hard Sci-Fi movie and this leads to confusion and boredom. Also this movie is a fairly predictable movie, especially the ending.

Kinda like a Black Mirror episode but longer
booknuttyp19 April 2019
Ok boom, ima start by saying I would of given this 6.5 cos it's not really a 7. Don't get me wrong, it's decent but they could of made the characters more deep. They ain't one dimensional exactly but they're probably 2 dimensional if that makes sense.

It's quiet a grounded movie so when some tings happen in office scenarios you think to yourself "rahh, if that happened at the work place I'd call HR" and it kinda takes you out of it cos it's so bloody clever.

They try to throw this plot twist in which you could probably see coming a mile away but in imo? They coulda hid that ting way better bro

Ok, I know it seems like I'm cussing this film out but don't get me wrong; it still bangs, some interesting ideas and the actors do their ting with what they've been given to work with. It is black mirror vibes for sure but colder if that makes sense? You'll deep what I mean when you see it

Engaging but convoluted + unfocused ending
kuarinofu26 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film felt engaging up until the 1 hr mark. They establish some interesting ideas (mostly borrowed from Black Mirror) and feature some interesting visuals (mostly borrowed from the Matrix, Inception and even Requiem for a Dream).

It looks and plays very well for a low budget film for a while, but at 1hr mark it looks like they just gave up. The film would've easily topped my sci-fi list if it had a powerful ending (or at least a tolerable one). But it just stops. The main lead just gives up all her strong motivation because (I guess) she understood that her brother made his conscious choice and he wants her to let him go or something, I'm not sure about this since it got a little confusing at some point.

Most of the supporting cast has nothing to do in the film and that's a shame. I really wish they would play a bigger role in the story. Also, this would've been great to see the slightly altered versions of them while inside otherlife, just a slight change in the acting. Just make everything a little off.

Anyway, Otherlife is still a good low-budget sci-fi, what it needs is a more powerful or at least a little less convoluted ending. They could've even kept the ending they've done, but deliver it in a visually more comprehensible way.

Lukewarm
lexa_morgan2 April 2018
I think this movie was an interesting taking on reviving someone via neurotechnology from something such as a coma. The characters were phenomenal when it came to acting and conveying emotions and events but I think all characters were very underdeveloped. I even think the plot was underdeveloped. It felt like it scratched the surface of everything occurring throughout the film. The relationships between characters were hard to invest in with less than enough information and depth and making the storyline a bit unconvincing. It wasn't until the movie was nearly complete, did I understand what had happened and what was trying to be achieved to save the brother with the technology and the entire movie is about saving him. Again, the acting was wonderful but the plot was mediocre at best.

A prove that you don't need big budgets to make good sci-fi
timvandenbranden9617 October 2017
When I first saw an announcement for this movie I thought it would be just another sci-fi movie with a decent, but not that original story and a smaller budget. Nevertheless I decided to watch it and then I realized how much mistaken I was. This movie brings one of the more original stories I've seen in sci-fi the last couple of years. Combined with an excellent cinematography and good acting this movie lifts itself up. I know many people who don't like to watch movies with smaller budgets, mostly foreign movies, not produced in Hollywood, but then again, this movie proves you don't need to have the big budgets to get full potential.

Don't understand the 'boring' 'turned off after 20 mins' reviews
danieloconnor2408 November 2018
If all you give a film is 20 mins you won't get what the film is saying!?

Takes from a fair few previous films, Total Recall, Inception, The Matrix, Minority Report... and as many have said Black Mirror, (not a bad thing) but weaves them well in my humble opinion, it does try to cram a little too much in to the main character while the rest are pretty 2 dimensional (money grabbing partner for 1), and the early abuse of the tech seems to be left behind, or not explained out later?

All being said, a solid movie, I've see worse with better ratings, and you won't mind the 90 odd minutes it takes to watch it.

Half of a fantastic film.

Unfortunately Otherlife becomes almost unwatchable at the half way. Going from great sci-fi to incredibly drawn out, almost unwatchable nonsensical TV drama. The characters become almost Comedic in their motivations. Avoid at all cost.

Very well done moderate budget science fiction
perisho21 October 2017
Just a note, this is NOT a television show, it is a stand alone movie. It is a very well done, moderate budget, stand-alone SF film. It does have a very standard SF plot line but it is done so well and with enough originality that it definitely stands up. I was engaged in the story through the entire film, it is shot beautifully, the actors are all good, the set design, productions values, music, editing and script are all very professional and high value. This is NOT some crappy low budget student film.

Definitely worth a watch.

Good but dark near-future techno-thriller
Dusan_Indjic-Luigi28 October 2017
I was happy to get much more than I expected. All movie-making aspects are well met! Being one of my favorite subject, I would like to underline the movie subject and it's dystopian context. The movie gives science-driven insight into some negative implications of interdisciplinary technologies-driven Western civilization. Those are slowly becoming part of our everyday reality in the hidden negative way. It's already proved through last century how the new technologies come promising us better life but, as shown in the movie, are eventually misused the other way around by egoistic/selfless corporate-driven entities ending in variety of horror scenarios.

Being a part of this recent and "hungry" subject, explored by likes of P. K. Dick's novels-inspired movies and e.g. Black Mirror series. This piece concentrates on one of many sensitive implications of those forthcoming technologies. In this case combined of molecular biology, genetic pharmacy, various cognitive sciences and computer technologies like VR, "neuro-simulations", bio-3D printing, etc. Ultimately ending with horror scenarios like being imprisoned in ones' own mind; w/o means of escaping or ending it, not in any way.

What if "They" shell really take our freedom, our choice, as it's already happening - slowly, subtly and subliminally? That's I believe why movies like this are important.
