fun action/adventure anime
joelherro28 June 2015
In a mythical world where God's live among men, adventurers choose a God to follow and join their Familia. Then they explore this huge, multi-levelled dungeon and kill the monsters inside to gain crystals (in exchange for money) and to help build their skills. Bell Cranel is the sole member of the Goddess Hestia's Familia and he's an adventurer of modest skill. He does have a lot of courage, heart and potential though and learns fast. He meets a woman of immense beauty and strength and vows to become stronger so he could be considered worthy of a woman like her.

There's a lot to like about this show. It has humour, action, a good plot, interesting characters and great animation. I only scored it a 7 because it's a bit 'young' for my taste (I'd have liked a darker, more serious tone) and at one season, it does seem a little pointless. I'd like to see a 2nd season to flesh things out more. Worth a watch.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
Tweekums4 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In the world of Orario adventurers working for gods fight monsters in the 'dungeon'. Most adventurers work in large groups called 'familias' which serve a single deity but our protagonist, Bell Cranel, is in a familia of one serving the goddess Hestia. Bell is a junior adventurer who falls in love with Aiz Wallenstein, a senior adventurer who rescues him one day in the dungeon; shortly afterwards a new power is awakened and he rapidly improves in skill. Armed with a better weapon he takes on a supported (bag carrier) named Liliruca, unaware that she has another motive for working with him; a motive that will put him in danger. Over the course of the series he will have to win her over and defeat a number of dangerous monsters as well as avoid falling victim to rival adventurers who are suspicious of how quickly he is progressing.

In many ways this is a fairly typical fantasy adventure anime; our protagonists starts off fairly weak but progresses to become the strongest while attracting a harem of female fans and different powered monsters living in different levels of the dungeon… almost like a video game. However despite these clichés I found it surprisingly enjoyable. Bell is a likable protagonist and even as he becomes more powerful he doesn't become annoyingly arrogant. The rest of the cast are good too; especially Hestia and Liliruca. Even though we don't doubt Bell will win his fights they are still exciting thanks to some pretty good animation. The character designs are distinctive so there is little danger of confusing anybody. Overall this is worth watching for people who like action anime in a fantasy setting; it is just a pity that it was only one season.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Give it a few episodes to get it's groove, it's worth it
dameon_green29 March 2020
Give it three or four episodes before it can really make an impression and honestly think it's worth it.

This is a nice and fairly fresh take on many figures in classic mythology and how they interact with their human "followers" and worshipers.

However It is, like almost every Anime at this point, filled with tropes but "generally" it seems to handle them fairly well, avoiding wearing them out.

The first season is better than the second (as seems to be often true) otherwise it would get a 8/10, but there is Hope the 3rd season will pull it all back together maybe make the previous season make a little more sense.

Pro's: -Consistent animation quality. -Colorful characters. -Fresh take on classic mythology. -Good English Dubbing. -Additional seasons and OVA's.

Con's: -Trope heavy. -Predictable at times.

Once you move on from the first Episode it is Fantastic!

I absolutely loved this show, I can not tell you how bummed I am that I have to wait patiently for another season, I am definitely chomping at the bit! I will mention I did get annoyed by Hestia quite often though. Other than that it is a fun adventure!

Actually pretty good.
invisibleunicornninja9 September 2018
When I initially started watching this, I was expecting just a dumb fun ecchi harem series, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually good. After episode one, the fan service almost vanishes and the writing vastly improves (though there are a few minor plot contrivances). The characters are all interesting with their own motivations, and the main character isn't ridiculously overpowered (I mean he is powerful in the end, but it makes sense, it isn't just because he is the protagonist, and he actually does go through an arc).

I'm not saying that this show is amazing, but it is pretty well-written with fun characters and a fun story. The animation/sound design/voice acting is way better than I was expecting to a point where it is actually pretty good. For the most part the fight choreography is well done.

There are so many points where I thought this show was going to fall into annoying and predictable cliches, and for the most part this show avoids them all.

I would definitely recommend this show, but be warned, episode one has a lot of annoying fan service and clunky exposition.

a bit of fun
SnoopyStyle26 January 2019
The Gods have descended upon the world to live among the mortals. Those who worship them are known as Familia. Bell Cranel is a low level adventurer and the only member of the Goddess Hestia's Familia. She is lustfully obsessed with him. He is an admirer of high level adventurer Aiz Wallenstein and gets rescued by her often. As Bell continues his adventures, he is joined by supporter Liliruca.

I don't know much about anime but this ridiculous title drew me in. It sounds like a silly adventure series and it is exactly that. The characters are fun. Hestia is a ridiculous sex kitten. Bell's boy scout persona doesn't get me until the end of episode six. Saving Liliruca despite everything is an emotional high point. The plot isn't much but it has just enough story to let the appealing characters work. The overt sexuality is silly fun at first but that does wear thin. Overall, it isn't a great series but it is a bit of fun.

A good story with unique and endearing characters. Action situations that, combined with good dialogue and background music, detonate into epic moments that will leave you with goosebumps. Witness the birth of a great hero.

This Anime is Great but Dumb Also!
scottmannen117 March 2021
I should have known by the title that something was going to be off on this anime. I was looking for a Rise of the Shield Hero type of anime and this one came up as recommended on IMDB. It has all of the usual traits I like: Dungeons, monsters, levelling style characters, action, adventure check, check, check across the board. The title tells me it's going to be a bit of a comedy, but I can live with that.

So what is it about this anime that has me giving it a 7/10 instead of the 8/10 that I wish I could be giving it? The plot is decent enough, storytelling is ok, animation is great. It's the main characters stupidity combined with the 'moral of this story' type of episodes that the creator has decided to make this show. For example, the main character a new dungeon adventurer teams up with a shady fox girl that is supposed to support him as he runs dungeons for loot and fame. From the very start she comes across shady with secret sneers and shady smiles telling us that she is out to steal and rip off the main character.

Unbeknownst to our protagonist his "supporter" is lifting money from him every run because he is to dumb to understand a 50/50 split on loot OR because he just implicitly trusts her when she says she split the loot 50/50. In reality she is getting 70 and he 30. Their relationship culminâtes when she pushes him into running a much harder dungeon than normal where she drops monster lures all around him then steals his magic weapon and money straight to his face before leaving him TO DIE surrounded in high level monsters. If this happened to anyone they would be pissed! Well he manages to escape the monsters thanks to another adventurer. The thief manages to get surrounded by monsters herself and is about to die when our protagonist shows up, kills the monsters and saves her life. This is the part that got me upset: he treated her "why did you run away?". He didn't even understand what or why she did what she did to him. She starts crying and tells him how she has been stealing from him before trying to have him killed. He just shrugs it off like it was nothing of note and still wants to be her partner even after learning what she did to him! This kind of moral high road story is ridiculous. Anyone wronged in such a way would want Justice, their money and goods back and certainly wouldn't want to work with or be friends with them again. Our hero doesn't want any of that and it bothered me a lot!

That's why this could have been a better show if they "got real" with reality and didn't take the high morals to such a ridiculous place. If this show was a little more serious and a bit darker it could have been a hit like Shield Hero.

Slow start, but since season 3...
pablosanguinettiz18 August 2022
The story starts a bit slow during the first two seasons. The main character has weak emotional strength and socializing issues, he doesn't know how to manage mature situations, some people may find this annoying, but we can't blame him, he's 14. The story is decent but not very exciting, though, there are some pretty exciting moments in the first season. I still found the show pretty entertaining with these "issues". However, since season 3, this show has kept me continuosly hyped and tense during a lot of scenes. The story arc is much stronger (for now) and it just keeps getting more and more exciting. The animation is also top notch, the fights are a pleasure to watch (especially season 4, for now), looks like the animation just gets better and better. Also, Bell's character growth is much more present since the third season, Bell risks his reputation for doing the correct choices and starts learning from his mistakes. Right now i'm really hyped for the next season 4 episodes. The show's current state while writing this review is just after the fifth episode of season 4 got aired. Give this anime a chance, wait until season 3 :)

Good beginning. Good middle. Off ending.
moonwalk-5601920 September 2019
When I first started watching this show, I fell instantly in love with it. It's was very well-paced and lighthearted with good action, I had begun to get lost in it. I wish they'd have done a better job with the end of the season, it stands apart from the rest of the show, but not in a good way.

Season 1 was better than Season 2
Irishchatter18 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It was pure disappointing because Hestia and Bell were pretty much top notch characters in season 1. In season 2, it seems Bell might as well be a supporting character because he just seems so distant from the story altogether while Hestia is floating around in the air doing pointless quickie battles to the other gods. Maybe I'm wrong to some but I think the personality changes in this anime wasn't a good idea. As well the jokes seemed unfunny in season 2 like I didn't laugh once in the 5 episodes I've only watched and after 5 episodes, I just had enough of it.

I'm so disappointed that this shows season 2 left me in such disbelief. I honestly was so looking forward to the second season coming around and like OPM, it turned out to be sucky all along. 5/10 I give it.....

Good for the plot
kwesib-321795 July 2022
Despite the title, the anime is quite serious. Like several modern anime series, this one is also plagued by some tropes. As of July 2022, the main character is a generic anime protagonist. I don't dislike that but I'd prefer if future titles would add something unique to their protagonists. For instance, they could have gotten a voice actor with a unique voice for Bell whiles still keeping his kindness and naivety. That would have made him stand out in comparison with the cliché shy protagonists in numerous anime shows. I have nothing against Bell because he works well for the plot. However, after watching countless anime, Bell is just a shade of the several generic protagonists I've seen. As a result, he's forgettable.

The side characters, in contrast to the main protagonist, are rather complex. I enjoyed their moments. My only problem is some of the female characters. They don't all have to fall in love with the main protagonist. If you've watched lots of anime like I have, this forced harem gets too old and cliché. Look at Avatar the Last Air bender or Attack on Titan. The females in those shows are simply human. Not all of them exist just to fall in love with the main character.

The strongest point this series offers is its plot. In the first season, it felt like your typical plot where the low ranked protagonist climbs up the ladder and becomes powerful. From there the show becomes complex. It explores its world setting and introduces engaging arcs that are perfect to binge watch. The show isn't perfect or top tier. However, its plot makes a good argument.

My Favorite Anime!
TheGreatGreenBadger24 February 2020
Heartwarming and delightful! It is full of creative characters and amazing backstory! In a fantasy world full of adventure, gods, goddesses, and monsters, this is definitely one of my most favorite animes ever! The story, although not original, takes on the beauties of a hero archetype and manages to pull off something that other animes fail to do. The humor is smooth and the fight scenes are just gorgeous! The music only adds to just how amazing the series is, not too distracting but getting you pumped for the drama and lore of the Dungeon. It's pure magic. Also, the world building of Orario and the Familias is fantastic. Not only does DanMachi have its main series, it has a series on the Loki Familia (Sword Oratoria) and other good spinoffs that indirectly affect Bell Cranel. I'm truly a superfan for this anime!

It is far from a masterpiece
martin_merelesc3 March 2022
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Is far from a masterpiece, yet given the premise, I think it delivers a lot more than most people probably expected coming into it. The story has most definitely been done before, but adds its own twist to it and more importantly it does it *well*. It goes to show that with proper execution, a time-tested concept is still perfectly viable, and as a result it provides an anime that always leaves you with a smile on your face. Call it generic or shallow or whatever, but that doesn't change the fact that it's easily one of the most entertaining anime of the year thus far. And really, when it all comes down to it... that's essentially all that matters.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II this wasn't really a season about picking up girls from dungeons. Instead, it's an extended story on what the previous season had established with its character and ideas. Unfortunately, it was a mediocre experience that truly didn't make a big impact on my enjoyment. It's feels like playing a video game with a long expansion DLC pack added to the main quest line.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III is in the minority of shows that kept me engaged from start to finish and actually looking forward to new episodes - because new and interesting stuff just keeps happening. This is literally what it means for a series to be well-directed.

Season 4 is pure peaked show
kset-9900817 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Animation is outstanding. I really love the Argo Vesta sequence.

And I like how they explained the lore of the dungeon. Every single episode of season 4 has much better world building than the other seasons.

Pacing is also pretty great.

And Monsters in this season look Creepy af.

Storyline doesn't feel like it was forced like other Fantasy anime.

This might be one of the best Fantasy show I have ever watched.

I watched it this season with very low expectations but it turned out so different.

In what anime does a MC cries everytime,he should be looking cool and saviour...

It has a good story the character development is a bit fast paced but it comes with its merits. Seasons 1 and 3 were the best. If u want you can skip the side story.

Aggressively alright
maeved-4626416 April 2024
This series frustrates me a lot. One one hand, I think the idea behind the show and world building are really interesting. But on the other, it's very run of the mill.

For every interesting fight or character, there's some fan service or an incredibly annoying character that does nothing in terms of plot.

The fan service is especially horrible. It's at it's worst in the first few episodes (especially with Hestia who seems to be purely for fan service) and while it does chill out quite a bit, it still leaves plenty of time for boob and butt shots of any woman on screen for more than 10 seconds.

But overall, I enjoy the plot and most of the characters and it's really only brought down by the stupid crap it pulls.

Gets better with the seasons
Nonomemes25 April 2022
The adventures of Bell Cranel in a world of earth fallen gods which lost most of their original powers and have then to work their own elbows to collect real life followers.

The story is varied as well as the different gods so you never get annoyed, the big problem is the fan service, to blame are especially Hermes and Hestia. The former looks out of a typical ecchi anime (target age about 15), the latter is really really disappointing: The series start that they (Bell and Hestia) are so cute, then at middle of first season she start to be more and more explicit, the season start to sink in a sea of fan service where she looks more out of other kind of series (e.g. Ridiculous outfit she use also for sleeping). The second season is a bit better trying to address the issue.

If you manage to watch the entire first season I absolutely suggest you to watch the shoujo spin-off: Sword Oratoria is awesome.

UPDATE: The season 4 is better (e.g. Absence of fan service) than the first, however as standard my numerical rating will not change as it is refers to first 24 episodes only for any series.

Why?!?
robertrogers-0508723 February 2021
I've been a fan of anime and manga for a very long time... But over the years anime has gone down hill. This anime first season was good, a low rank adventure that wants to be strong and be on the same level as the female he has a crush on.. I enjoyed the first season, I can not say the same after.. Bell character is flawed in so many ways... His endless crying and emotional distress just drags this anime down... If I was to take a shot of liquor every time he cried I die of alcohol poisoning... This character has no depth just whining and crying about every hardship that comes his way... This anime is more depressing than entertaining... Sad to see it ruined.

One of the best animes ever
evdvseffd23 February 2024
It's really a fantastic anime when it started in 2015 the way that the anime goes and the characters development was very good and not like other animes the hero becomes overpowered the first two seasons wasn't perfect but it had a good story building but it kinda focused on sexual scenes some of the time and I think because the wanted to attract people to watch .When the third season appeared they improved and focused in the story and the fights and the anime begin to be better. The fourth season was the best one of all the 4 seasons by far. In my opinion the way that the anime took was right.
