The progress of Asian short filmmaking became clear once more in this year's Ssff & Asia, with the number of quality productions being truly overwhelming. The quality of production for the Japanese ones was, as usually, quite high, with the newest trend, of having popular actors taking the seat of the director, definitely seems to work, through the film of names like Riisa Naka, Win Morisaki and Sota Fukushi. The ones from the Asean countries continue to exhibit the most creativity while touching serious social issues. “Ruthless Blade”, an impressive Chinese animation by Zhang Bo and “Knitting My Heart”, a Korean short with wicked humor by Oh Ji-hyeon were two more titles that stood out.

Just how committed is Christopher Nolan to using practical effects? Fans already know the director purchased a real Boeing 747 airplane so that he could blow it up on camera in “Tenet,” but it appears Nolan’s commitment to practical effects hits a new high in his upcoming tentpole. Speaking to Icg Magazine this month, “Tenet” editor Jennifer Lame estimated the final cut of “Tenet” has under 300 visual effects shots. Nolan told Icg, “The visual side of the film is huge in scale, but our VFX shot count is probably lower than most romantic comedies.”
By comparison, “Avengers: Endgame” had reportedly over 2,000 VFX shots. The under-300 number is also low for Nolan himself. “The Dark Knight Rises” had 450 VFX shots according to VFX supervisor Paul Franklin, while Wired reports “Batman Begins” had 620 VFX shots and “Inception” had around 500.
“Visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson was responsible for coming up with our safety net,...

For Diane Guerrero, taking on the role of Crazy Jane in HBO Max’s “Doom Patrol” isn’t as easy as just playing a kooky character from a comic book series. Jane actually has 64 personalities, the result of childhood sexual trauma.
“It’s like, ‘Of course I’m doing this role. It’s because I am’ — and this is a word I used to use to apply to myself — ‘I am crazy,’” Guerrero jokes on Wednesday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast The Big Ticket. “I know what all of these emotions mean and I know what these emotions are on a heightened level.”
“Doom Patrol,” based on the DC series of the same name, follows a band of outcasts who gain superhuman abilities after suffering horrible incidents. Along with Crazy Jane, the group includes Robotman (Brendan Fraser), Negative Man (Matt Bomer/Matthew Zuk) and Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby). New to the second season,...

Fifth generation director Li Shaohong’s career has spanned the entire length of the Chinese film market’s rise, from its days as a state-run industry churning out nothing but social realist films to its current stage of supporting ever more sophisticated and lucrative blockbusters and genre films. The current head of the China Film Directors’ Guild, she spoke to Variety about her latest project, the war film “Liberation,” which was pulled from China’s national day period of films, and her drama “A City Called Macau.”
Li’s drive as a filmmaker is to “stick as close to life as possible,” she said.
“It’s not just a single cataclysmic war or event that can change a country — the process of rapid change over the past 30, 40 years has been just as upending. People my age really have gone through every stage of that development, and have experienced so much.
