Average at best
Given it 5 stars out of 10 for it's attempt at something a little different from the norm, also given the obvious low budget, the film does not look cheap and the actors were decent enough.

There is another older movie in the name of 'April Fools Day' a 1986 film which is similar in some ways to this one, but does it a whole lot better!

Better than "escape room"

You can't argue about taste. "Escape room" is somewhat alike and has a higher score on IMDB, but I find this way better! Too bad about the ending though. That uhm... ruined it.

Warning: Spoilers
This is not a dream, this is really happening!

Horror, Camping, Riddles,....and drugs. A couple embarks on a make-believe slasher camping trip, very much like LARPing or those zombie survival fantasies. The girlfriend seems hesitant as she's not a horror fan, the boyfriend doesn't really either, he just doesn't seem to fit the profile honestly lol. The outing is a mix of scavenger hunt, mystery solving, and scare tactics...honestly it feels more like playing one of those hidden object games or Resident Evil (To find one half of the coin you must collect the ruby and the emerald, put the emerald in the zodiac sign of the twins, put the ruby under the picture of "The Grey Lady" etc etc) but still something you haven't seen a trillion times in other horror movies....having said that...everything else is. Scary woods....yep blair witchy. People chasing and scaring the hell out of you...yep Houses October Built. Horror movie fans filled with quotes and trivia...yep Scream. Traps where you have to choose who lives and dies, only there's a trick to the lock...yep Saw. It turns out everybody was in on it and this was just to scare the hell out of you...for fun....yep April Fool's Day. But I'll be honest, despite the fact that I was able to predict everything that happened long before it did (from the moment I saw her (Checkov's) necklace, I knew she'd be using it as a makeshift weapon) to the April Fool's Day twist, even to the secondary twist that her boyfriend was a villain. I still found this movie very watchable and sometimes intriguing; despite being a mish-mash of other horror movies thrown into a blender it still somehow managed to gain its own identity and kept me watching without becoming horrifically bored. I probably wouldn't watch it a second time, but I don't regret watching it the first time....not terribly unique but still enjoyable.

Not good
susana-c-fernandes29 March 2018
The 7 points rating is clearly a scam. I gave this movie a shot only because of that rating, so now I must let everyone know that the movie sucks.

A couple goes out into the woods in one of those group game experiences where the theme is Horror/Horror Movies. After finding some clues and solving some riddles, people start dying. The main character has to fight for survival while trying to figure out what's real in the game or not. A good premise, but it all goes straight to hell fast,

The main problem with this film is probably the acting, along with a feeble script and characters we couldn't care less about. All the clichés are there and even if this was an attempted homage to horror, it failed miserably.

It gets ridiculously predictable by the end and the ending itself comes as a relief after the hour and a half we just wasted.

Definitely: avoid.

Stop with the ones!!!!

This movie was far from good by my good it was not even close to 1. 1 is like horrible movie. You have never seen bad horror movies if you calling this a 1 lmao

The movie is prob average to a knock below but it's far from horrible. It's the kinda movie you would've saw on chiller network or sci-fi when they occasionally run a horror movie. Maybe not one of better ones cuz they occasionally have some gems or at least solid ones but my god people, you really need to chill handing out 1s like a 21 yr who just got their license & wanna pull it out all the time.

Way too many ones going round & your making it hard to take systems seriously. I usually will just ignore your dumbs 1s cuz clearly no thought went into them other than the rating itself. Very few movies deserve a 1 save for extremely independant ones. I've seen Valerian get a 1 & I'm like wtf did you expect, Citizens Kane or Winter Kills lmao. It was a Star Wars type movie & no wasn't as good but I wasn't expecting it to be lol. It's all bout expectations. Don't expect a 10 & when u see an average movie maybe you'll realize it's closer to a 3-6 than a dumb 1

The acting wasn't bad, movie had its moments. I don't wanna toss any spoilers in but if you want an Oscar worthy movie the im telling you please skip. Will say, There are a lot of other movies out there I would check first but if u come across this and have the time & it seems like you might like u could def do worst

Much better than I expected
djbaxter-980-74250726 July 2018
I wasn't expecting much of this movie - I didn't know much about the actors or anyone else involved in making the film and to be honest I wasn't sure I'd bother to finish watching it at the beginning of the movie, but it did grab my attention pretty early and kept it right to the end. Not going to give anything away but there are some interesting twists. Overall, I found it quite good. Watch it. :)

Decent low budget effort
bitbucketchip6 November 2021
While in no way ground breaking, this outdoor escape room movie is an entertaining watch. The acting is decent, though I suspect that's because the actors were told to "act themselves". The mystery isn't too hard to figure out, though they put a few unexplained red herrings in to keep thing interesting. The cinematography and sound were professional, as was the direction.

Five stars for a film worth seeing made on a limited budget. The only real weakness was the lead actress, who wasn't strong enough to carry the film. And the film was all about the lead actress. A better performance would have gotten this a seven. As it was, five stars.

If you go down to the woods today...
tattoopig22 July 2018
This film surprised me by being WAY better than I expected. The concept is great, the "traps" are cool and the double twist at the end is exactly as it should be. The acting is better than most Slasher films and the gore is quite good. You are never quite sure what is part of the game and what is not. Or is it ALL part of the game? Highly recommended for all Horror/Slasher fans.

Waste of time.

Warning: Spoilers
It started like what could have been a somewhat entertaining movie, an escape room experience as a slasher sleepaway camp. But when characters start to "die" off camera it goes from average movie to awful pretty fast. The acting is bad, cliche characters, most choices are dumb, interactions are awkward, basically making you want to stop wasting time on this.

The jealous evil boyfrienf ending is so bad. You spend all the movie seeing fake stuff to end with that awful ending that has nothing to do with the whole movie besides a single scene.

Also as a side note, being in a polygami relationship doesn't make you want to have sex with whatever breaths.

Fresh Horror Premise well executed
jonathanlang2315 June 2023
RUIN ME was a fantastic watch. It's a knowing, smart horror movie that manages to comment on the genre while pushing it ahead. It's by turns funny and frightening and shows an assuredness in terms of both its direction and storytelling. I really enjoyed the performances as well. All the twists and turns will ultimately lead you to a good time. In a time where many films are about reference and pastiche, this film has a found a novel way to explore the tropes. It's clear the creators of the film love the genre. The film definitely punches above it's weight class as it transcends the low-budget label with strong camera work, editing, and world building. Definitely recommend.

I enjoyed watching this movie the plot is interesting and the twist are pretty cool some you see coming, and i had a good idea of the ending by the 3rd act but it will trick your avg movie goer for a while atleast! It does a good job of having you think one thing for something else to happen, this is a good movie to watch with a friend or partner. If ask about this movie id tell someone to check it our.

Where are all these good reviews coming from?
hstrydom-247025 January 2019
Seriously, this was terrible. I never stop watching a movie halfway through because I don't like it, but with this I simply just couldn't continue. The acting is extremely bad and I couldn't care less about any of the characters. The character that annoyed me the most was the wannabe-goth emo guy. It's just terrible writing and littered with clichés that aren't even done in a way as a homage to the horror scene. Just skip this, really. It's a train wreck.

A waste of a good idea

Ruin Me Directed by Preston DeFrancis and written by Preston DeFrancis and Trysta A Bissett

Ruin Me is an exclusive movie to the Shudder service. As a horror movie fan, I can say that the Shudder service is totally worth the five bucks. They brought back Joe Bob Briggs and that is worth it for me. But they also have tons of really interesting newer and older horror movies from all around. But not everything is good. This brings us to Ruin Me. Ruin Me has a premise that is intriguing. This group of people are taking part of a slasher camp escape room kind of experience. But is it just a game or is it real? I think that idea has merit. It has potential.

This movie does not fulfill that potential. This movie has no style. It is a very flat visually looking film. I kept getting a Syfy channel movie vibe from it. The gore is nonexistent and when you get to the ending, you'll understand why but that deflates the whole slasher aesthetic. The pacing is off. For an 87 minute movie, it is really slow. It doesn't help that I can't stand the characters but in a slasher movie, that is not always a negative. But if you're going to have obnoxious characters, you have to have something else to balance it out.

The heroine is also quite unlikeable. She comes with some baggage because of course she does. It plays into the narrative of the film but I'm so tired of horror movies where the protagonist is carrying emotional baggage and past trauma. What happened to movies where the final girl is just a regular person who finds themselves in a horrific situation. This kind of horror movie is what Stephen King specializes in but lately they always have trauma connected to the horror present in the story.

Don't let this one suck you in. There are better movies available on Shudder. Try Mayhem for instance. Christmas Evil is a weird but good movie. Tons of great documentary material. But skip this movie. It's dull and a dud. I give this movie a D.

Fun and interesting!
ethan_murdoch9 January 2022
Two things stand out most to me for this film.

The first is the concept itself. We live in an age where people crave the experience as opposed to the viewership. Granted movies and games are still what people seek out, it seems to be growing toward total immersion. Ruin Me takes off from that concept and twists it in a way that intrigues. Some of its execution was flawed, but from a technical stand point, the film works if you're into horror.

The second thing was the performance of Chris Hill. While I enjoyed the cast as a whole, he managed to put forth a genuine character that fit the mold of the concept.

If you like horror, this is a good one to check out.

Fun horror flick
moviebuffchick7 April 2018
No so much "horror" as just interesting (and sometimes fun) to watch unfold.

Pros: The premise was great! Paid homage a few classics. The best part of this film was the uncertainty... the protagonist reaches a point where she doesn't know what's real anymore... and neither does the audience!

Cons: Somewhat predictable at times. Subpar and unimpressive acting (all around) Relied a little to heavily on the score and jump scares.

Overall... as the title of this review suggests... this was a fun horror film.

Warning: Spoilers
I liked this,

Thought the story line was interesting and had me guessing the whole way. Ended up picking the ending

I wouldn't mind going on one of these camps in real life, I think it would be interesting

Happy to see the husband die in the end and thought it was well set up.

Not great, not horrible
Bad_Penguin27 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I see a lot of prettty good reviews, which I'm a bit skeptical about... This movie was definitely not the worst, but it was far from great. The plot is somewhat predictable, halfway through you start suspecting the perfect boyfriend might not be so perfect after all... The acting was better than I expected (I'll give it that). But overall it's a very forgettable movie.

Let's play a game - RPC
kosmasp5 July 2018
Role Playing Camp ... or something to that effect. This is a horror themed expedition that goes south. Or does it? And where exactly does it go? And what does it all mean? Can there be too many twists? Maybe it's better not to think too much about it? Yeah let's do that and just enjoy the movie until it comes off the rails (entirely).

Maybe that is and depending on your view and if you care how it all is being resolved. You could argue that there are things that make certain characters unlikeable. And there are a lot of things that could go wrong even further or earlier in the movie. But that's what you get when a movie tries to be as clever as possible. It may strike a nerve with some, it may annoy others. Still nicely executed and more than decent

Fun Horror Romp
coursont1 May 2018
Saw this at Horrorama in Chicago with my wife and we both loved it. Strong acting, good script, and it is well filmed. This movie really moves along... jumping from one good conflict to another with some very inventive puzzles thrown in the mix. All in all a really fun movie and well worth a watch. Completely confused by the first two negative reviews here. Not sure we saw the same movie.

Surprisingly good
eve_dolluk22 July 2018
I went into.this with low expectations.

I was expecting a cheap B movie slasher flick. What I got exheeded expectations. The acting was decent, it was shot well etc also.

This was not just a mindless slasher flick.it was much more. Things here are not quite black and white and it keeps you guessing right until the very end.

Its certainly not a 10 out of 10 but It was an enjoyable 7/10.

Intriguing Premise, Messy Execution
Garoux31 July 2018
Ruin Me is a slasher from first-time director Preston DeFrancis. The plot follows a strangely small group attending a Slasher Sleepout camping trip, where they will be competing to survive the weekend in the "ultimate horror movie experience." Roped into this outing is Alexandra: the reluctant girlfriend of an Old Navy mannequin (Nathan).

Despite the interesting synopsis, Ruin Me suffers many flaws. Most prevalent being its remarkably odious characters. Every single person in this movie is petulant, hostile, and/or just plain stupid. Dialogue is one-dimensional and cringe worthy at times, often trying too hard to be edgy. Normally I'd overlook that in a b-movie, but character development was a significant focus here. All this is harder to swallow when nobody is sympathetic.

Initially I couldn't stand this movie, as the first twenty minutes had me wanting everyone gutted ASAP. I became more engaged halfway through, but the plot quickly becomes predictable. Which is why I think they decided to jump the shark in the last act. You can overlook some inconsistencies with low-budget horror, but sometimes a director just does way too much in an effort to shock. Unfortunately, Ruin Me becomes mediocre and incredibly convoluted.

This is a good movie with twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end.

All the performers do a really good job, with Marcienne Dwyer really shining in the lead role.

This is well worth a watch.
