- The start of this episode takes place a little while after the end of the previous episode.
The Shadowhunters and Clary discuss their options. It is clear that both the Circle and the Vampires want the powerful artifact "the Mortal Cup" for their ends; both have captured a loved one of Clary as leverage. In the end the Shadowhunters decide to consult "the Clave".
Simon is shown as a captive of the Vampires.
Back in the Institute, the Shadowhunters and Clary are discussing the Vampires. Isabelle knows their location: the "Hotel Dumort" in New York. Clary would like to go there right away, but Alec insists on needing a Clave resolution: The Shadowhunters are "not a slave to their instincts" like "the Seelies" (half-angel, half-demon beings like Fairies and Pixies). In the end Jace is swayed by Clary and reasons that since the vampires broke the Accord by kidnapping a Mundane, their action is justified. Alec finally points out that they need weapons, but Jace has a solution for that issue.
In the Hotel Dumort Simon plays for time with one of his captors and then tries to stab him with an ancient knife. The vampire (Rafael) is not hurt at all. A second, female, vampire enters and tells Simon she's been wanting to meet him.
Clary and the three Shadowhunters arrive at a graveyard where weapons are stored in a grave. Isabelle leaves to visit a third person and find out how to get into the vampire lair. Jace and Clary take a weapon, but Alec's weapon of choice (the bow) is not present. He'll have to sneak into the Institute to fetch one. Alec names Jace as his "Parabatai". Jace then teaches Clary how to handle her Shadowhunter-blade properly and explains the concept of parabatai.
In the Hotel Dumort Raphael and the female vampire (Camille) discuss Simon, the accord and the rationale for breaking the acccord. Both have lived for centuries.
Isabelle visits her Seelie lover Meliorn and discusses recent events while making love. Meliorn has been to the Clave and is frustrated about the Shadowhunters' treatment of Seelies. Meliorn is also the lover of Camille the vampire. Isabelle tricks Meliorn into revealing how to get into the Hotel Dumort unseen.
Alec pilfers a bow and arrows from the stash in the institute. Hodge catches him in the act but doesn't stop him.
Jace and Isabelle visit a biker bar called Hardtail. Jace shows Clary how to look into the Shadowworld; most clients of the bar turn out to be vampires. Clary flirts with one of the vampires who recognizes her as a Shadowhunter. Jace uses this ruse to steal the vampires' motorbike; Clary and Jace ride off at great speed and end up flying.
In the hotel Dumort Camille charms Simon into revealing what he knows about Clary and her memory. The memory-wiping ability of Magnus Bane is known amongst the vampires. They make out for a long while while Alec and Isabelle enter the hotel Dumort via the service entrance. Camille feels the Shadowhunters intruding on the hotel and warns her minions while Simon pretends to be drunk.
Jace and Clary arrive at the hotel; Jace burns some runes in Clary's skin for protection and explains to her how the process of becoming a vampire works. They meet up with Alec and Isabelle who fought and slew some of the vampires. Simon tries to run but is intercepted by Raphael as the sounds of battle reach into his room. Isabelle escapes from hotel Dumort just before the Shadowhunters & Clary enter and a standoff occurs between Rafael and the Shadowhunters. Raphael finally lets Simon go.
Outside Clary and Simon hug while Clary declares Simon to be her best friend and kisses him on the cheek, clearly not what Simon would have hoped for.
In the final scene Simon is fixated on a pulsing vein in Clary's neck.
