Going to be a bumpy ride
wibiudayana28 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
As a big fan of the books, I was incredibly psyched to see that they're making a TV series adaptation of it. I know that when books become a film/series, people would usually complain and they have the right to do so. So I lowered my expectations and from what I've gathered so far, its actually really good and watchable without the cringe factor.

All I can say is that, this series do lack the darkness and mystery found in the Harry Potter movies or Narnia. Rather at times had that horrible Vampire Academy/Twilight feel to it (film set, cliché stereotyping of the extras, changing it to a university now??). All I can say is that Jason Ralph is doing the series justice, hats off to the casting director.

Please please please, don't ruin this series. Great potential in the script, great characters and one of the most intriguing plot lines. All this series needs is that English magical world vibe rather than generic. I had low hopes for the series, but I was clearly wrong and that cliff hanger really stepped my expectations up a few notches.

Wishing this series the best & a side note to Lev Grossman, don't let them ruin your world. Fillory depends on you!

The Magicians pilot review
jackDee-5656516 February 2021
I freally liked the introduction of Fillory and their magical world, I like the more mature and adult portrayal of a fantasy show, I felt the actors get really well as did the writers, the pilot is slow but I believe that was the intention to grab you and make you interested in checking more of it out, I think thre characters are a bit unlikable and problematic but again I am sure the writers done it on purpose

Distracted by the Winchester round table
Hlaclaes88827 May 2021
It's a good pilot episode, I will continue to watch the next episodes to see where it is headed but I was a little bit distracted: why the hell is the Winchester round table hanging in the school? Does it have anything to do with the plot? Because I love a good story related to the Arthurian legend.

A good kick-off
danxfielding16 February 2023
Some viewers seem to think they packed too much information into this premiere episode, while others found it not exciting enough. I think they struck a good balance and hit just the right note. There's not THAT much information: Quentin has some mental issues, magic exists, a school for magic exists, and the school rejected Julia so she's forced to join up with unofficial, counter-culture magicians who are called Hedge Witches. Oh, also the antagonist is introduced, but I'm already flirting with spoiler territory so I'd better stop. One more thing: the school is nothing like Hogwort's. I think it's a great start!

Rushed Pilot
Rhaevon22 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know. I really wanted to like this, since I am a huge fan of Harry Potter. I've only seen the first episode and I will watch the rest, hoping it gets better, but the Pilot was bad. It felt really rushed with almost no background or character devolpment. So Julia and Quentin get to a magic school and they just immediately accept it? No surprise or disbelief at any moment? Doesn't make any sense. Then Julia has her mind erased but she cuts herself before that and she wakes up and she remembers everything? Just because of a cut? Really, this is a very rushed episode with lack of imagination, in my opinion. Seems like they just wanted to jump to the good parts in order to get people interested in the series but that was a really bad idea. I'm not looking forward to the next episodes but let's see... I'm not too confident

Good Potential,
elton-306782 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
So far (3 episodes) so good, shows good potential.

Hope they don't make 'Q' out to be just a BIG WUSS like Potter was. With all that reading, studying, and practice needs to come confidence, experience, and wisdom. He has, after all, had it in him and known it deep down all his life. (and we are immediately led to believe his presence has been predicted/foretold yet he's just left to be another student? with mediocre abilities)

  • only time will tell if they will develop his character -

Alice seems to be in chaos, at first shown to be such a gifted magician, then soon morphs into a 'helpless', 'hopeless' blond bent on self destruction over the 5 or 6 year ago loss of her brother.

So many conflicts so early, the school, the rival gang in which Julia is now involved, all these evil spirits around, plus everything coming at them from other worlds? plenty of opportunities for the writers, maybe too many

A long way to go
TK3213 February 2018
The pilot episode had all the excitement of warm ice cream on a cloudy day. I will watch another episode, but I sure hope it picks up. Everything seemed very uninspired and unemotional, but there are three seasons so I figure it must pick up.

Describe The Beast That Attacked You
wandernn1-81-68327431 December 2022
First off, the PG13 sex scene gets a big minus. It's just like watching a bad infomercial. -1 Star

This a show for kids? It seems like it. The magic....that seems to impress everyone is not that impressive.

I was not impressed by this Pilot at all. It did not grab me. 4/10.

And IMDB has now made it so a review has to have 600 characters before it can be entered. I really don't expect that to last very long because people are sure to complain about it. But until that happens I guess we have to expect reviews to be long winded and sometimes about absolutely nothing to do with the show in question.

Rushing through it
bjwind12 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first episode could have been at least 4 episodes if they wanted to. It rushes through a couple of months(?) at the school, people you dont know the name from start dating eachother and problem start to surface for characters that you dont have a bond with.

Yes thats all stuffed in one episode, next to learning about magic and the rest of the plot

Should have given it more time and attention.
