A brilliant idea, sadly not delivered too well!

Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, the film falls short in between what we can know from the original 'The Exorcist' and Denzyl Washington & John Goodman in 'Fallen'.

The story idea is effing cool, really could have made a great 'demonic possession' style horror movie, but at that it fails too much.

Dear Tom Sizemore, visibly not in good shape (barely a year before his death), does still play his part, and quite well (reminding me of Leonardo diCaprio in Shutter Island).

So, what do we get? In the ending year of the American Civil War (1865), my guess, a Union soldier gets backstabbed while hunting down a Confederate soldier. Yep, them rebels had comrades, too.

Now, instead of dying, he somehow ends up in 'A Witch House', wherein an accursed family, or so it seems, has to endure faithfully, as one of their own has fallen to 'The Devil'. Means, one of the family is mental ill, anti-social, or similar. Back then, the biblical explanation was still popular.

By weird circumstance, that Union soldier, possessed, survives decades longer, and on his deathbed asks for a Detective to visit him.

The Detective (Tom Sizemore) had one unsolved case haunting him, and expects foul play (scam, fraud, trickery), when the possessed soldier shares his view of the story.

In the end, we realize that the 'possession' works by turning each killer of 'the demon' into its next body to be possessed. Henceforth, the only way to trap the demon is by either warning those trying to kill it, or otherwise preventing them from it. For, if not, then the demon starts by slaughtering their loved ones, until a new killer aka supplicant body shows up.

This is the kind of horror, where good people still try to do 'the right thing', not villains, criminals, drug addicts. It has enormous story-potential, but that makes it harder to tolerate the boring, cliché, and badly done parts of the movie even more. Still lame at 120% playback speed IS lame.

The movie is also impaired by clearly low-budget funding, it could look MUCH better, if done properly.

R. I. P., Tom Sizemore. Still, a remake of this movie could do much better by not only stumbling through the tropes, as even dedicated movie-making students do better these days.

Who talked to him.

Warning: Spoilers
Clayton Douglas (Tom Sizemore) Is an Allentown police detective circa 1930. He has a wife and child but is married to his work. There is a case he didn't solve. He goes to an asylum on a case rather than spend the day with his daughter on her birthday. An inmate named Daniel Glassman (Jody Quigley) requested Clayton by name to make his confession. He is confined to the basement and the staff does not know he is there. Also in the room are Dr. Heysinger (Robert Miano) and a nun-nurse (Airen DeLaMater). The confession is typed and read by Dr. Heysinger. Glassman was stabbed in a Civil War battle at Chambersburg. His injured body was found 21 years later in Stroudsburg. He tells a very long boring story of being cared for in a farmhouse that had some demons from time to time.

The cinematography was dark and difficult to see. The farmhouse scenes were way too long, The sets were constantly dreary. Bad script. Too long. Too Boring.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

truly a mess

This film was a jumble of ideas with a terrible script, honestly there wasn't one part of it that made sense, was well acted, or was well-scripted. Way too long. I was on the edge of turning it off but stuck it out until the end so I could say I gave it a fair chance. It didn't deserve it. Nobody wants a shocker to succeed more than I. I will need a lot to erase the memory of this road-accident of a film. Not even worth trying.

The premise was good, a detective lured to an insane asylum in Pennsylvania ostensibly to meet a dying patient who wants to confess something to him. Unfortunately the script meandered from that decent premise to mix various horror genres without succeeding in any. I guess it's closest to a Sentinel or Exorcist-type horror, without the logic or intelligence of either of those movies.

Really good, except for the writing, editing, acting, cinematography, art direction...

Warning: Spoilers
I made it thru about 40 mins, I couldn't go any further. From the very beginning, the performances and writing are awkward and painful. It is a shame that this is one of Tom Sizemore's last films as I have really enjoyed many of his movies. If they had any respect for him at all they would have never released this film. It obviously had no budget , but the flash back Civil War battle scene literally had two people in it...no joke, a Civil War battle with 2 people, they should have held a boxing match instead. If you are a Tom Sizemore fan, save yourself and go watch a much better Tom Sizemore movie...Heart and Soul, Heat, Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down, and trust me ...you will thank me.

Very well executed, except the ending
jayendran3 November 2023
Post The Exorcist, this is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen.

Every bit is subtle and spooks the wits out of the audience.

What's best (for the film-makers) is it seems to have all been done on a low budget. It's awesome how they managed to achieve so much. Well, this fairy tale of a horror movie ends with the ending, unfortunately. For what is an already elongated movie (approximately 2hours and 11minutes), the ending seems to be haphazardly done with little thought. I'm sure the director visualized and presented the ending from their perspective, but fails to deliver the same to the audience. Hence, viewers are left with a not so clear and conclusive end.

Nevertheless, for the 98% of the movie that was done extremely well, the movie deserves a strong 9/10. It's unfortunate a few users decided to praise, yet bash up the rating.

The production team should have marketed this movie better. I happened to trip on its listing by chance and decided to give it a shot.

Underrated Horror Movie!
thehumanx5 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"A life without purpose is a waste of it. It took the devil to lay its hands on my shoulders to awaken mine. I would allow it to shallow the flies until this spider is too large to ignore. No longer can it stay cloaked within the faithless. This is God's work. "

The movie started out really well. I did not expect this one to be this good. The ending was bit questionable though -- how did the devil repossess the dead Daniel (seemingly alive) after it possessed Clayton when being shot by Clayton? LOL

But rest aside, I really loved the movie -- the atmosphere, background score, cast and all. In years to come, I think this will be an underrated horror movie like 'The Cursed'.

Rated it 10 because seeing 4.4 felt kinda unjustified.

PS: RIP Tom Sizemore.

On the edge of your seat thrill!
jtvizion19 October 2023
Impuratus masterfully brings you into a horrific experience and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire film. The film is a masterclass in tone and the dark gritty tonality of the film really made it an exciting watch.

The performances were exceptional. Jody Quigley as Daniel Glassman was absolutely chilling. Airen DeLaMater's performance as Sister Rose was dynamic and powerful and had me wanting to leap out and save her from the perilous situation. She was no doubt the bravest character in the movie just for being in the room alone with that thing... And Robert Miano was phenomenal in his role as the drunken doctor who kept me on the edge because the way he played the role made me feel as though he was somehow more involved in the horror show than he let on.

All in all, it was a great watch and an excellent film for anyone who is psychologically disturbed and wants to take a ride on the dark side of the human psyche.
