Valuable Record of a Virtuoso Performance
I was fortunate enough to see this concert live in the Royal Albert Hall and witness the amazing virtuosity of pianist/conductor Leif Ove Andsnes as he marshaled his forces as well as giving a rousing account of Beethoven. To witness him at work was to watch the flowering of a genius; someone who thoroughly grasped the soul of Beethoven's music and who knew how to communicate it to his orchestra and singers.
Despite the terrific camera-work of co-directors Kriss Russman and Amy Gibb, the television broadcast can never hope to recreate the experience for the viewer. What it does communicate, however, is a sense of the drama of the concert; and how the music held the audience spellbound through sheer brio as well as excellence. Definitely one of the highlights of the BBC Proms season and well worth watching more than once.
