A terrific end to an intense season
cherold2 September 2015
This has been a rather remarkable season, notable for its intensity and its willingness to burn through characters, either by killing them or putting them in an untenable position. The season also introduced its more terrifying antagonist, Kindzi.

The final episode was less notable for the story than for the emotional punch, which was considerable, and the ending, which leaves open the strong possibility that this was the series finale. I can't really imagine how you continue the series now, although I guess in sci-fi there's always a way back.

While this season had occasional lapses of logic and dispatched of one serious obstacle in a surprisingly, "look how easy that was to fix" way, overall this was terrific from beginning to end.

Was this the end of the series?

Warning: Spoilers
After seeing the finale of season 3, I suspect there won't be a fourth season. Why? Somehow I had the impression they used the season finale to wrap up almost everything:

-Nolan and Doc Yewll got their revenge on Kindzi.

-Amanda and Stahma made peace.

-Nolan "let" Irisa go and went randomly into deep space.

-Irisa's monologue at the end saying he's getting his dream and that he was a good father to her.

In addition to that, there was no real cliffhanger in the end. Well, if it was the end of the series, then it was a good ending.

Maybe I'm wrong and there will be a season 4, but without Nolan. But I'm not sure what the storyline could be. Maybe a conflict with the VC?

Great season or series ending!

Warning: Spoilers
Defiance still has the potential to be a great show and Season 3 showed us still has the ability to give us an incredible story every episode or 2. Unfortunately after an awesome season 1, season 2 was a huge disappointment. I basically spent the entire season waiting to watch exactly what I was expecting to happen. Season 3 came back with a vengeance hitting the stride of Season 1, but I think the damage is done as evidenced by the season finale shooting the star of the show a few hundred million/billion(?) light years from earth to play captain Kirk on a ship with no food or water and a crew of purple alien werewolves to convert from the viscous species they were to one willing to live a new lifestyle. SyFy protected themselves well with a season finale that if not continues will serve to have wrapped up the story better than many shows do that admit they are doing so. But it's Defiance and it's 204? with the earth populated with a set of species that could be just fine if they learned to play nice. Sad that season 3 was so good but season 2 so bad that I don't think season 4 is going to happen. This and Continuum were 2 of the 3 shows I think have incredible potential when it comes to running a long, long time without running out of story. Continuum was good and believe would have developed a bigger fan base in time with some help. The premise and wonderful parallel to reality made it awesome, but it is gone. Defiance has just as much potential and while Season 3 took it up a notch the ratings indicate the damage is done. The 3rd is Sense8, a Netflix creation that is not available outside that domain at the moment but has such a unique premise that I can imagine it going on for many years to come. Much as Dr Who with the regenerating time lord and his ever changing side kick opens the door to seemingly endless production, these shows hold that in common. Sense8 at least now has a season 2, Continuum dead with a TBD partial last season they pretend we fans should be happy about getting (we're not, we wanted the show to dive even further into the current world situation and stir the plot line with the world wide events that could have easily be written into the story and made it oh so awesome. Then there is Defiance that has the backdrop the likes of Middle Earth to choose any of 1000's of possible story lines to pursue with greatness, but after Nolan and Erisa saying their goodbye's my money is on so long for good. Jaime Murray as Stahma is owed some awards as she played that snake with greatness. But after her performance on Warehouse 13 dwarfed her co-stars no surprise. The Omec could have been the basis for a lasting peace between human and the Votan races if Kinsi hadn't whacked her dad and wallah, a long term story in which we get to see the world rebuilt opening up an infinite set of possibilities. Instead we shoot them across the universe with Nolan leaving us with an apparent end to the series, but a rock star ending to the life and times of Nolan as him and his daughter have resolved their issues and he goes out a hero like he had to. So much good foundation laid to just flush the thing. Also could have had the Omac just ignite a war with the Human and Votan's forced into an alliance of necessity (Like us and the Russians in WWII), but either a huge basis for so much good story lines.

So long Defiance, it could have been great! SyFy, I'm growing tired of your fumbling. I'm a Science Fiction fan, have been for 5 decades. You've had some potential winners and you blew it. Guess I'll have to look to AMC for good writing and sticking with stories. Breaking Bad left them having set the bar for completing an excellent story. You guys get good ones started and don't seem to realize the potential you have in your hands. YOU ARE THE SYFY CHANNEL! Science Fiction requires diverse creativity taking us where no-one has before, GET ON IT AND STOP DROPPING THE BALL!
