Ethan Daniels desperately misses his US Army hero father Kyle, wounded in military hospital in Germany, alone with his mother, teacher Gretchen, who returned to their hometown, still out of a job. Initially aloof neighbor Melissa soon warms to Ethan, and bonds with Gretchen, who is at first reluctant to help with the estate in town of her just-died, long-estranged mother, but finds a letter apologizing for the break-up and stating there's a sister given up for adoption, and insists to help look for her. Trail after trail runs dead, until local attorney Robert, who employed Gretchen, proves himself a brilliant amateur researcher, with a delightful surprise result, just in time for Christmas.
