Early drafts of the script for Donovan Reid featured extensive internal dialogue inspired by Fight Club, but was cut in favor of creating more mystery around the protagonist.
While some people have suggested that Donovan Reid is connected to or based on the documentary "The Imposter," writer/director Austin Smagalski and his co-writer Edward Hamel only discovered the film after a few drafts had already been completed. The concepts bore enough distinct differences that the team was able to move forward with production without any major adjustments.
Production only lasted 12 full days, with a half day to shoot the opening credits sequence and a short drone shoot months afterwards.
