One of the most changed game remakes of all time
residentgrigo14 May 2016
I have been a fan since the series started and don't even dislike the 2 missteps (Secret Agent Clank and Full Frontal Assault) but will admit that the series needed this reboot. This remake is nearly unrecognizable from the 2002 original in terms of characterization / story, level design and especially gameplay. Returning players can thus look forward to a mostly new experience, while new fans can still go back to the HD Collection and still get something new, if inferior, out of it. That's how to do reboot ladies and gentlemen but the formula is now more than established at this point, so don't expect another must-have as with Ratchet 2 or 3 back in the day and just another great yet short 3rd person shooter with a decent amount of replayability. It may also be the best looking game on the PS4 but the reused Cgi sequences from the companion film managed to mess with the narrative. Can we now please reboot Crash/Jak and Daxter. Ratchet never left us after all. 8,5/10

Fun Distraction Between Games
I randomly played Ratchet and Clank games throughout the PS2 era. My brother was more into them during the PS2 era than I was, but I popped them in on occasion. It wasn't until I heard the high praise for A Crack In Time that I came back to the series. I remember enjoying the hell out of that game. Clank's puzzle section were really cool and well done.

After Crack, I didn't play any more R&C until this one. It was free with PS+, so I downloaded it during the quarantine as a time killer after I finished a few games prior.

It's nothing deep story-wise or gameplay wise. It's just a videogame-ass-videogame. It's fun and the platforming feels good.

My major gripe is that none of the weapons in this one feel especially good or powerful. Many times I felt like I should be demolishing waves of enemies, but many felt like they took 3 shots too many. Also you can't upgrade weapons without leveling them too. A lot of them felt like the max ammo counter was really low for the first levels of it so I was constantly running out of ammo.

There were really only 3 or 4 of the 12 weapons I really liked. Once I ran out of ammo for those I used the one I least liked and just didn't have fun with them. I understand it's a remake of the original, so maybe the guns brought from it weren't the best since it was the first, but I just felt like a majority of them felt really weak.

Clank's puzzle sections are extremely easy and weak too. There's like 3 and all you do is swap between 3 kinds of little droids you use to traverse an area. It's more tedious than anything. Really weak compared to A Crack In Time's ones that incorporated time travel and whatnot. They also each have a running towards camera moments way too many times that aren't fun.

Besides that this is a pretty easy and fun game to play. It looks great, though some moments when there are a ton of enemies and bolts flying everywhere that the frame-rate becomes abysmal. Also the underwater level gets real framey when you're underwater.

It's simply just an easy fun game to breeze through. Despite my dislike of most of the weapons, I still found enough fun in it. It's easy to recommend if you have PS+ and haven't touched it yet. It's a sort of pallet cleanser between games that you don't have to invest a lot of time into.

Great game
85122226 March 2018
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Ratchet & Clank" (2016) is just a pure joy to play. Everything works in this game amazingly great. Graphics are gorgeous, game play mechanics are terrific and the whole world is just a joy to explore. I liked the simple story, invitingly told.

I'm started to play this game for a second time on challenge mode and i know i'm gone do everything in here - "Ratchet & Clank" is just a pure joy that is hard to let go.

You Can't Miss This Game!
rwncopeland27 November 2020
I really can't say a bad thing about this game, it's so good.

The gameplay is really fun to play, it felt so fluid and enjoyable. Ratchet doesn't just have is wrench but a whole arsenal of weaponry with each being different from the other. There is literally a grenade that makes every enemy dance, and it's hilarious throwing it at the bosses. There is even a trophy to make every enemy dance, maybe I should attempt it. Every weapon is so much fun that I end up using nearly all of them in every battle, and there are a lot of weapons to choose from. The guns can then be upgraded and it's a really cool system. Upgrade them enough and they will receive upgrades like being able to shoot more than one bullet type at once etc. Apart from weapons there are a lot of other gameplay mechanics that make it just fun to move around, You can jetpack around, use a hoverboard or even grind a rail. When shooting it's also important to make sure you're dodging every bullet you can, and Ratchet looks great while doing so. Double tap cross and Ratchet will be doing somersaults over the bullets while you keep your eye on the enemy. The enemies are all really cool and unique in their own way. Some guns are better for specific enemies so the game is always making you swap out your gun for another, which purposely makes it fluid and fun.

The story was very interesting with it tying in with the movie. To tie with the film the game feels like you're inside an animated film controlling the characters. Honestly, I didn't think I'd enjoy this but it's actually really interesting. The characters are really interesting and the great animation makes them feel so real. Ratchet and Clank are probably now my favourite duo, with me relating to Clank so much. They're both really enjoyable to be with and I can't wait to go on another adventure with them. The next game isn't going to have an animated film so I'm interested how they approach it, hopefully they keep the really good animated cutscenes.

The graphics were so beautiful and stunning, that everywhere you look it makes you take a breath. Every world you visit has something going on everywhere and makes it feel so lively. Even playing on a base PS4 everything looked really good, and I can't wait to see it all on PS5 with the next game including ray tracing. You wouldn't think a game like this could look so beautiful but it really is. Every world you visit is different to the other and all of them are so fun to explore because of the beauty.

To conclude, this is a must play game that you can't miss. Right now it's going really cheap so you have no excuse to not play it. I can't wait to play the new game, just need to get a PS5 from the depths of the universe.

An inter-galactic battle.
Gamesearcher15 January 2019
Ratchet & Clank, unlike the eponymous movie, is wonderful. In terms of combat, the game does this extremely well. The zany arsenal of over-the-top weapons that all feel distinct and memorable couple well with the enemies across the galaxy. Everything from turning your opponents into sheep, to burning them alive, to making them a few pixels feels satisfying as all hell. Story-wise, and unlike a typical PlayStation-exclusive, this game is nothing too much, although it doesn't try to be. The story is easy to digest by everyone, and is pretty boring. The writing is really a hit-or-miss situation. Sometimes, the game will squeeze a decent smile out of you, and other times will result in boring, childish gags, that don't understand who to cater to. Graphically, this game is undeniably gorgeous, looking like you're playing through an animated movie, while the characters do look like stiff cardboard boxes during cut scenes. In terms of music, there's a lot to be desired. No tracks stuck with me, except one, but that was just because it sounded way too similar to a track of 1993's Doom. After listening to the original's music, this is a whole step down. Most of the levels are also very well-made, with useful items lurking most of them, while a few levels fall into routine tedium. All in all, this game, while marred by clear issues is still an enjoyable experience.

Ratchet & Clank Review
Moviememmer30 October 2019
Pros:
  • Interesting characters
  • Great fast-paced Gameplay
  • Good arsenal of weaponry
  • Bright and colourful graphics
  • Some good boss fights

Cons:
  • Forgettable story
  • Nothing that really stands out

Verdict: This game is purely for the gameplay fun of shooting monsters and blowing stuff up. This main story is pretty forgettable, but at the end of the day it was still a fun game.

Fun reboot of the series but there's something missing
briancham199422 May 2021
This game has all the hallmarks of the series and all the creative and technical talent as well. It's a joy to play, the settings are creative, there's a constant sense of humour and the weapons are really fun to use and upgrade. However, the story is lacking some charm and the characters are not so memorable (a flaw carried over from the 2016 film). There is some variety in the form of Clank sequences, hovership battles and hoverboard races but I still found this game a bit more repetitive and tedious than the other installments (Deadlocked aside).

How Can a Game be Mid and Good?
cchenders4016 March 2023
I went into this with high expectations. My first PlayStation was a PS5 and this was my first ratchet and clank. I played this game in 2023 and honestly I thought it was just alright. The story is lackluster, the movement is clunky, the exploration pretty linear, and the boss fights pretty rinse and repeat. I also found the save points to be pretty bad. I found myself spawning 5-8 minutes back on the regular.

The guns are cool and funny, but that is the extent of how interesting the combat is. Movement feels bad which surprises me for an insomniac game.

Maybe it was just me but it also seemed like the animations in the cutscenes dropped in quality massively by the end of the game.

On the positive though: cool guns, pretty graphics over all, the worlds are cool, art style is awesome, and the game is really well polished.

Buy it on a sale.

Just Play the Original
HowlingSnail21 October 2019
Gameplay-wise the game is nigh-identical to the original, only with a third of the levels missing. This, combined with the fact that the game has been bled dry of the heart and soul of the original, and just turned into the most generic, by the book game imaginable (Hell, why did they replace all the music with generic action movie score?), means that this game is inferior in almost every way to the PS2 original. It only misses out on a 1/10 by making the hoverboard sections more fun and fleshed out, and by having some quality of life additions that aren't in the original.

Just play the original. You'll have a much better experience overall. The number of people I've seen praising this game I consider to be an insult to the franchise. Almost as big an insult as the fact Insomniac considered this to be an acceptable product. If this is what they consider Ratchet and Clank to be, then I sincerely hope they never touch the franchise again.

dialogue being way too active all the time.
fh14722 January 2024
It looks amazing and at 60 frames a second on my PS5 it is a Marvel. When you think about how little time they were given to make this game.

But they are working with the framework. That is the movie and that is not a good story and the game has a problem with the dialogue being way too active all the time.

The gameplay is fine Ratchet & clank, gameplay I will say that it certainly isn't bad but I have played this before, I Love the original so much that I keep getting reminded of it, so I just keeping be sad playing this.

The story, the story my biggest problem with the story is that main characters they are way too nice to each other and friendly . But that most because I played the original where they were kind of a** to each other and I like it.

I didn't enjoy it, but maybe you will.

A movie based game that only fans can appreciate
Terryfan5 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes I don't know why I trouble myself with movie based games. Now I know we have come a long way in video games but this one really tested my gaming rage.

Especially the two final bosses, some of the most unfair boss battles in the history of video games. I only kept playing this game but I was too stubborn to quit. But the two final bosses really just got me livid.

The game's graphics are top notch even the smallest details are most appreciate the sound and music is good as well.

It just seems the game focus more on presentation than the gameplay.

The controls take time to get use to. The game is loaded with insane weapons to get the job done. The game follows the events of the movie along with original parts of it own.

Bottom line is that the game is amazing to look at but not too much fun to play.

If you're a fan of the series then this is for you other than that this game will really push your buttons

I give Ratchet & Clank an 5 out of 10.
