- Captain James Hawdon is confident to be promoted before his regimental CO leaves for India, but only his fiancee Honoria's jealous sister Frances Barbary receives sergeant George's urgent notice the colonel will leave early and makes father Edward disclose their near-bankruptcy. Arthur refuses a meager settlement with his sister Amelia, so takes a loan from Scrooge to set up Meriwether Compeyson to seduce her in style.
