Wrong synopsis
sysgoddess18 December 2021
The synopsis describes a movie I would be captivated by and enjoy watching instead of this movie.

I watched approximately 15 - 20 minutes before realising it was a waste of my time.

Rubbish as rubbish can be: not a Christian movie
annus_sanctus1 March 2020
First of all, abusing the title of John Bunyan's book " A Pilgrim's Progress" doesn't make your movie great, doesn't make it look like it is the same story, and it definately is not alike that story. Much in this movie is not Christian at all. Seems they prefer to please the world rather than bring a genuine Christian "fantasty" movie. A "fabled good king"? Meaning God? The acting, the special effects, the story, it is all bad as can be. And much in this movie is more from the evil side than from the good side. The only good work is the cinematography/camerawork. Some may see this as finally a "Christian fantasy" movie, but the last part is more present than the first one. Avoid it if you can.

This Review is r/t is this close to Bunyan's book "Pilgrims Progress"
radarfirs726 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you watched this movie as a "Fiction / Fantasy" then my review is NOT for you. I am writing a review for those who see the "Title" and have heard somewhere in the grapevine this is a more modern "Pilgrims Progress" perspective. This review is to show people it is NOT and is only a "Fiction / Fantasy" movie with a Similar Title.

Movie starts with a statement of a King coming to bring the North/South states of the Kingdom. In the Bible the Nation of Yisrael becomes a North/South states after the Death of Solomon. Character at start is supposedly a Judge of a Town in the South, the Bible has Judges. These two are as close to Scripture I can see. The Longer I watched the movie, the more I felt How Carmen's Character originally felt in his Song "Invitation from a Witch" VERY DARK Movie. I had to stop watching the movie, for it just never even compared to Pilgrims Progress. Those of you think this is a part 2 of Pilgrims Progress ... should watch "Christiana". This was too Dark and i am not talking about the Photography or lighting. I watched almost 1/3 of it; I could not see any connection to Pilgrims Progress. In Pilgrims Progress the Main Character is focused on Scripture warnings, I Never saw anything like this. Also it appears both sides (Evil/Good) use forms of Witchcraft / Sorcery. Now CS Lewis Narnia does cover Witchcraft/Sorcery but only on the Evil Side. This is NOT related to Bunyan's Book or the Bible; but if looking for a "Fiction / Fantasy" not r/t the Bible then this is for you.

Christian Mythology propaganda
acelticceilidh12 October 2020
Full of bible thumping nonsense. So disappointed that Christianity is still trying to damage races and culture and that people are allowing it. Money talks unfortunately.

You have to know what you're watching...
ZyaRep2013 March 2020
This is a low budget movie. Yes, and I could hammer it for it's shortcomings, but I did think that it had some great moments too. A few bad ones, but some moments it felt like a big movie. So I liked it overall. I mean I like fantasy movies, and I am a Christian. Bad acting? Not like tons of other b movies. The guy that said bad acting is not correct. While some over acted a bit, sure, the main cast was pretty good albeit unknown.

The guy that gave it a 1 because it wasn't a Christian movie. Um, metaphors and allegories? Um, Jesus spoke in parables? It's about as plain as day in this movie.

Pretty good for low budget! (may contain spoilers)
alyssahuberfilms7 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I personally know the director and main actor from my college so I'm a little biased here--I've been rooting for these guys for a while! But I'll aim to give a balanced review.

(may contain spoilers) The shots and color grading were amazing (9/10). There were a few shots that felt a bit off, but overall very well done. Special effects were great for the budget--obviously not Hollywood level, but still convincing enough. Acting overall was great, especially Patrick Thompson as Vangel and Eric Tiede as Wiles Pratt.

Costumes were on point (9/10), and the soundtrack was incredible (10/10). The mouth movements of the orc-like creatures (demons?) were minimal and awkward but I'm guessing that's due to a wardrobe issue (masks I think).

The story was decent, but kinda generic and at times hard to follow (5/10) especially if you're watching from a secular perspective. I would have liked to see more of Vangel's backstory to give his character more substance. But I really enjoyed the exposition/backstory scene narrated by Elder, those were some great shots and brought more life into the story (and cleared up some things I was confused on).

I appreciate that the energy between Vangel and Ezera was tender without giving into a stereotypical romance trope (where the hero gets the girl). I liked Ezera as a strong female character.

I can picture the average Christian viewer who likes fantasy movies (like Lord of the Rings) appreciating this film.

Thanks Matt Bilen, Patrick Thompson and all the other collaborators for producing this film against all odds, it was really cool getting to see it in its final form.

Beautiful message, locations, and amazing on a crazy budget!
db197416 February 2020
First off, I know this is a low budget movie. Very low by Hollywood standards, but I was really impressed with the visuals, the solid acting, the muscial score was above its paygrade, and the message of redemption is something for everyone to hear.

Of course it has limitations and it's not Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, but for the budget $250K or so (I think I saw on social media) this is pretty remarkable. It seems impossible they pulled it off, honestly.

Hope to see more attempts like this. With faith-based films we get so many sports movies and dramas. At least these guys tried something totally ambitious and different. Kudos!

Not Pilgrims Progress
fleroux-9695018 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is not an adaption of Pilgrims Progress, it seems to be a prequel about Evangelist who set Christian on his journey. Going into it thinking you are going to see Christian and Faithful and you'll be disappointed. And yes it is a Low budget Christian Movie.

Reinvention of a classic story.
donutshop-2175026 April 2020
I'm gonna give it a 9 just because people seem to be bashing what was obviously a low budget film, and some christians are hating on it because it's not like the original or somehow sacreligious. They tried to do something different with it.

A fantasy film and not a Biblical film
nightroses3 July 2021
This is a fantasy set on a world of Eos. There was once a king who united the whole world and people but then it turned dark, and divided into North and South. I haven't read the novels its based on, but was impressed by the scenery, costumes, storyline and much else. It wasn't a run of the mill fantasy, and it does make you think, and you have to rewatch it to grasp things. The only downside was that this movie didn't really explain what was going on half of the time, or what happened to the demons and the evil king.

Some issues, but a solid Christian film on a budget
Teacher_Man7816 February 2020
Great locations, costuming, and love the a very diverse cast. Pay attention Hollywood....

Yes, it has some issues, but it also has heart. Starts off a tad slow, but it's just a fun journey story that people of faith can relate to.

Music is really good too for a movie of this level. The girl who played Ezera was really amazing and the lead was really good as well.

Good for families and fantasy lovers
bozewoman7810 January 2021
I liked this movie but you have to know something about "Pilgrim's Progress" to fully appreciate the film. Yes, it's low-budget but if you are looking for a movie that your kids can watch that doesn't drop the f-bomb, this is an okay choice. The scenery is beautiful and costuming is pretty darn good for a low budget film. There were some direct references to Bunyan's tale which I liked. Some of the lines were not as strong as they could be, but some of the scenes were very powerful and worthy of some family conversations after the viewing. If you are expecting LOTR, don't. The stories aren't the same.

Great Christian movie!!! There is a spoiler in this review.
frodobagginshobbithf12 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was chomping at the bit to see this movie, and followed it for quite awhile before it came out, and it didn't disappoint!

This story was inspired by Pilgrim's Progress (hence the title, of course) and is an adventure put in a fantastical kind of setting. It follows the journey of a man named Vangel who was basically falsely/wrongly accused.

I really enjoyed watching the relationships develop between Vangel, and Ezera and Elder - especially between Vangel and Ezera. The guy that plays Vangel - he was awesome and he was so expressive with his eyes I thought. I was happy to see Cha In-Pyo as Elder too. He was such a boss. Ezera - I loved her character because watching her was like watching the grace of God hit someone and they blossom. The bad guy was annoying to me. But that's the whole point of the bad guy.

There's a scene at the end between Vangel, Ezera, and the bad guy. Vangel was trying to help Ezera so badly. Wow. Man that was good stuff right there. Whew! I wanted to punch the bad guy in the throat at that point. But the way the Prince confronts the bad guy was SO POWERFUL!

This movie was awesome! It was something I needed to see. A reminder of what's most important - the love and grace of God!!!

I really hope they make a sequel!!!

Big budget film makers forget that it should be about the story not the actors or effects. This is a highly enjoyable film

Brilliant concept and beautiful cinematography
valtornainspire19 July 2020
Great cinematography and storytelling! I loved the film even with the rough spots mentioned in the Behind the Scenes interview. You always figure out how to do it better afterward.

Engaging primary cast and directing! Mostly seamless storyline but lots more to tell. Great post- production makes the difference! A little more TLC makes this a 10!

Left me wanting to see more! I look forward to the rest of the story!

Not perfect, but good attempt.
fredstevenson17 May 2020
People, people. This was low budget film and yes it has some issues. Some bad moments, but honestly, it's better than some b-movies I've seen. Cinematography was pretty dang good and a few solid performances. It's not a 3.2 rating. That's pretty low. I mean 5/10 I can get behind, but I think people are really bashing this with 1s expecting some crazy GoT or LotR film.

AMAZING!
lbyrdhorsewoman8 October 2020
An epic prequel to John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress", this movie is a work of art all to itself! Yes, the movie was made with a small budget... but it was ART nonetheless! The story of faith in a battle of good and evil... the characters...the allegory... the special effects... and the world-building! One of the best fantasy films ever made since Lord of the Rings!

Thank you Matt Blien so much for creating this masterpiece and looking forward to more to come!

It was ok for low budget

It was ok for a low budget film. Probably deserves a lower score if you compare it to bigger films, but I thought it was decent.

Great movie.
bjdtien22 August 2022
It tells a story, it follows a fantasy script, and it's got morals. What more can you ask for? Sure, it doesn't have the best special effects, but I'm more interested in a good story. I agree with the PG-13 rating, so SUPER young kids might be a little too scared of some moments.

I can only fault it for what I fault MOST fantasy stories for: we don't know too much about the characters. We only get the experience of being with the characters as we see the story. I don't have a deep feel for them in general. That doesn't make them less enjoyable for me though.

The acting isn't terrible, the scenes are beautiful, and the costumes are wonderful. Really, the costume folks deserve a big round of applause. You don't NEED a high budget film to enjoy yourself.

I'll also say this is wholly a Christian movie. It's a parallel to God's Kingdom and the final days of Revelation. It's wonderful to see a fantasy take on it. I love it!

Well-meaning effort
kymrox57 March 2021
A well-meaning effort to make our belief cool. I think this could have appealed to unbelievers just for the great acting, special effex, costumes, etc, but it was not the most well-thought out story line imo. I felt like the story & sometimes the dialogue didn't always come across the way it should have. It felt like it was missing elements, meandered a bit & didn't have a real purpose. For instance, I was bothered by the story line with his friend; I felt it was a bit abrupt the way they dropped him off the film in the middle of nowhere. I don't think I even saw him leave. I think they should have fleshed out the story of the evil king a bit more, it was a bit sketchy. If he's the villain, we should get to know what makes him tick & why he should be feared as a worthy opponent. Not just let him do a few tricks with magic. These are the things that can interrupt the flow of the movie imo. Otherwise, I thought it did a pretty decent job I give it barely a 7 for originality.
