The day before Meriwether's wedding to Amelia, returned Matthew has Arthur lure Compeyson away so that he can tell Amelia the truth about them. The Bumbles and the orphans prepare the home for the trustees' visit. Honoria objects to her planned union with Sir Leicester being spoken of so falsely by her father and Frances. Matthew gathers the board, which visits Amelia and urges her not to marry so hastily, as Compeyson will then control all her assets. Compeyson returns, telling Amelia of Matthew's love for her; Amelia accuses Matthew of self-interest, forbids Matthew and Arthur from visiting Satis House, committed to the wedding, clinging to Meriwether. Resigned, Honoria accepts Sir Leicester's proposal. Matthew leaves, vanquished as Amelia now trusts only Compeyson. When one orphan asks for more, the trustees, appalled at such disrespect, refuse the Bumbles' promotion; outraged, Mrs Bumble, kicks the boy (Oliver Twist) out.
