David J. Skal on Island of Lost Souls (2011)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
The always intelligent David J. Skal is the center piece of this 13 minute interview where he discusses ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, both the 1932 movie as well as the novel that it was based on. Skal always goes into the greatest of details no matter what he's discussing so fans of his will certainly want to keep a notepad around because there's all sorts of great information given here. He talks about not only the movie but goes into some nice detail about Wells' novel and various influences into it. He also goes into nice detail about the type of horror movies that were being made at the time, various sexuality that was placed into the film and a connection to Oscar Wilde. Another great piece has him talking about the connection to Tod Browning's FREAKS. It's funny to see that ISLAND OF LOST SOULS and FREAKS would turn out to be the most controversial horror films of this period. Again, if you're a fan of the film or of Skal then this interview is a must watch. There's so much great information to be learned that fans will certainly enjoy it.
