Frank tells Maureen there are no girl astronauts. He is wrong. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova, who made her first voyage in 1963. However, due to the cold war and the space race, it isn't likely this would have been common knowledge to an average American in 1973, and the first American woman in space did not join NASA until 1978.
