Father Brown has to deal with a corpse, twice.
Sleepin_Dragon12 December 2017
Father Brown and Mrs McCarthy witness something unusual whilst out for a walk, what follows is a baffling case.

The show is back on form with this one, following the previous episode The Missing Man, the tone is a lot more serious, more gritty, and definitely more intriguing as a mystery.

Quite a dark story, but wonderfully engaging, with great characters. Pooky Quesnel is superb as mother Ruth, arguably giving a series best performance, she shines in every scene. It almost has a touch of Agatha Christie about it.

One of Series 4's best offerings 9/10

The graveyard shift

Warning: Spoilers
Pooky Quesnel guest stars as Ruth Moore in The Resurrectionists, an intriguing episode about body snatching and fake deaths and so on. We're kept guessing until the end, and it's the sanctitude of the confessional booth that protects the solution.

Pooky is actually a nickname, and the actress is Joanna Gabrielle Quesnel. I thought Pooky was the real name, one of those quirky English traits.

Anyway, I'm enjoying catching up on the early seasons of Father Brown, along with the early seasons of Law and Order and Magnum, P. I., for daytime television in a world where it's not fashionable to watch such programs.

Corpse and robbers ( I know groan time!)

After young baker Alexander Moore dies in an accident, his corpse is stolen from the graveyard and discovered on the premises of undertaker Peter Blackstone, father of Alexander's secret girlfriend Catherine, who is in a feud with his mother Ruth, though he denies taking it. Father Brown realizes that Alexander had faked his own death but that something went wrong. In establishing how and why he uncovers a family secret dating back many years.

Quite a puzzle is set up for Father Brown to solve. A young man dies, his body's stolen, but he fakes his death. But he ends up dead. Who killed him? In the centre of this a feud. This is quite good mystery where inspector Mallory gets told off by Father Brown for joking about the dead boy.

How I'd love to see Bloopers for this episode. Mrs McArthy & Lady Felicia & their reactions to the situations they find themselves in. And how Sid helps Father Brown figure out a few things. I laughed out loud. Only a few more episodes before the changes Season 5 brings.

The Resurrectionists

A rather macabre opening as Father Brown comes across an accident scene where the body has been decapitated.

It was young baker Alexander Moore killed in an accident but soon his body disappears from the graveyard and found on the premises of undertaker Peter Blackstone. Alexander's mother who owns the struggling bakery thoroughly dislikes the undertaker.

Worse still the body has shown up with the head intact!

Father Brown suspects that Alexander might have faked his own death at first and was then later killed.

An enjoyable episode from the pre title sequence onwards and you just know that both the baker and undertaker have a dark secret which have embroiled both families.
